Thoughts about iPhone 4

Canon S400
Canon S400.

Many years ago when I was speaking at Harvard about the future of media I held up little old Canon S400 saying that I dreamt of a time when you could shoot video from a street corner and send it directly to the web.

Well that day happened when software that allowed streaming from cell phones came out like Qik

I liked it so much I invested in the company.

Now Apple has raised the bar once again with the iPhone 4, with increased video quality to HD, and enhanced microphones for noise suppression.

MICROPHONE
It will be interesting to see how good the microphone is on the iPhone. I'll also want to test out mic solution for the iPhone 4.

I'm looking forward to the Blue Mikey and wonder if we'll see adapters for additional mics.

TRIPOD MOUNT
Too bad Apple didn't include a tripod mount. That would be nice.

I'm sure XShot will come out with something.

EDITING
Another breakthrough is bringing HD movie editing to the iPhone.

Up until now we've been sharing moments and posting them.

With editing software we'll be able to have edited moments and send them out.

Will that lead to higher quality videos being produced? Yeah, I think so.

People who enjoy editing will spend some time and produce some nice videos, but it all comes down to storytelling and evoking emotions, like my friend Tim Street says.

VIDEO QUALITY
The video quality is going to be much better and I'll be very interested to try out the iPhone 4 with its HD video for both live streaming and uploading.

I wonder how long it'll take to upload?
