blip.tv - It's a blog!

Let's say you want to start a video blog, want to do it for free, have no hosting, and don't know how to code HTML.

Try out blip.tv (beta).

Right now you can go over there and sign up, upload a video and a thumbnail, and have a blog. It's very easy.

I just went over and started up a blog and posted my first video in a few minutes. Check it out at blip.tv (beta).

Note: Keep in mind that your thumbnail has to have a width of 320 to look nice.

Video: Let Marcus Speak

Minnesota Stories: Minneapolis Mayoral Mayhem:
"You might think a mayoral debate would be boring. I did. I was wrong.

This video, to me, shows the power of democracy and democratized media. None of the local television cameras were there (except, importantly, MTN cable access). Marcus Harcus stood up and demanded to be heard. One thing he yells from the balcony is 'How come the media doesn't give equal access to all the candidates?' Good question."
Nice job Chuck.

The Magazine - The Age of the Outsider:
"With entities like Clear Channel working to create a monoculture of the airwaves, Big Macs being served up piping hot and perfectly identical from Boston to Beijing, and mom-and-pop stores being bulldozed to put up Wal-Marts, truly independent artists offer a model that doesn’t jive with the system: real cultural and creative autonomy."

"I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. It was He who created all that we see and all that we feel. Folha de S. Paulo: An interview about videoblogging

Here's another interview. This time it's with Mariana Barros from Folha de S. Paulo, a major Brazilian newspaper.

Since the resulting interview will be in Spanish, and most likely edited, here are the questions and my answers:

Question: First of all, I would like to know what´s the difference between video blog and blog casting.

What changes from one to another?

Are they a kind of an evolution of the same idea or are they based on different things?

Answer: It's similar to the difference between an audio blog post and a podcast.

An audio blog post that is delivered through RSS is a podcast.

A video blog is a blog which contains video in it's posts. When you subscribe to an RSS 2.0 feed with enclosures for that video blog, the resulting media that is delivered to your computer could be called a blog cast.

The content doesn't change necessarily, only the method that you obtain and consume the media.

Question: Is the process of making it the same? Where can I get more information, tutorials?

Answer: Here's more info on adding an RSS 2.0 feed to a blog. Everything is the same. You are just giving your viewers a way to get the new videos delivered to them instead of them having to check all the time on your blog to see if you have a new video.

How to add an RSS 2.0 Feedburner feed to your Blogger Blog
People want to subscribe to your weblog feed and get your new posts delivered to them. Use Feedburner to send out text, audio and video, just like the old time milkman delivered milk.

---

Go here, http://www.antisnottv.net/, to get FireANT, a program for your Mac or PC that will allow you to subscribe to a video blog:

Question: Why did you start doing it? Where the idea came from?

Answer: On January 1st of 2004 I decided to make a New Years Resolution to figure out how to easily put video in a blog. As a frequent blogger and video producer, I wanted an easy way to share the videos I was making.

On January 1, 2005 I decided to get my wife involved and started the weekly real reality show, The Carol and Steve Show. When we watch reality TV shows, she always kids me that I like to think everything is real. So we decided to do our own reality show where everything IS really real. No desert islands and no food challenges. Just real life. We just set out to record our lives and share our experiences through videoblogging.

Question: How does it feel being a "web celebrity", having popular website? Did you expect it?

Answer: The celebrity, if you could call it that, or popularity that has come about has been surprising to me. It's totally unexpected. I'm just making small films about my life, things I see and do. One person that I make these videos for is my mom. You know how mom's like to get phone calls to hear what you are doing? Well, I could be on the phone with my mom for 24 hours straight and I wouldn't be able to explain to her what I can easily show her with video.

The surprising thing is that people all over the world find these videos interesting. The comments area associated with each video allows us all to join in a conversation. People from Australia are surprised to see snow at the beach in winter, people in Italy can't get over hte size of my supermarket, and people from California enjoy listening to the Boston accent.

Question: Do you think the future of TV will be mixed with internet? How?

Answer: I do think that the future of TV will be mixed with internet. In fact, it already is. I'm involved with a company called Akimbo that is delivering video content over the internet to tv. They carry my videos right along with BBC and CNN. It's democratizing the distribution method for video so that soon anyone will be able to create video programming and have it distributed to people in their living rooms.

On the other side of things, TV producers are looking towards the internet to get more content out there to fans and viewers. The recent Rockstar INXS show is a good example with video clips that are not shown on TV. The producers say, "MSN(R) Video has streamed 7.1 million clips of the rockers competing for the chance to become the new lead singer of INXS."

Question: In your opinion, what do you think will be the next video midia tendency? How we´ll be wathcing videos in five years?

Answer: In five years I think we'll still watch video on the same devices that we now have, TV, Movies, Internet and handheld devices. What will be different will be the providers of that video. Although we'll still have mainstream media and Hollywood, in addition to those providers we'll also see content produced by what we today consider passive viewers.

For many years people have been making movies on their home video recorders and storing them in a shoebox. As editing tools get easier to use, we'll see more people creating their own video stories. We're seeing it now with videoblogging. Regular people like me are telling their stories. Each day new stories are delivered to my desktop, that enrich my life. Through video I get to know these people from around the world.

There are going to be easy ways to find video that interest viewers, through search engines, program guides, trusted sources, tagging and communities. We're already experiencing the excitement of seeing the possibilities that the future will hold, and I for one can't wait for the future to get here. I'm so excited by it, that I'm there already.

The value is in trust

BuzzMachine : Who wants to own content?
...in this new age, you don’t want to own the content or the pipe that delivers it. You want to participate in what people want to do on their own. You don’t want to extract value. You want to add value. You don’t want to build walls or fences or gardens to keep people from doing what they want to do without you. You want to enable them to do it. You want to join in.

Don McAllister - ScreenCaster

ScreenCastsOnline:
Over time, I'll be building a library of ScreenCasts covering lots of different topics. They'll range from simple beginner level topics to the more advanced topics later. I'll try and keep them brief and to less than 10 minutes.

I'll be demoing some of the various utilities and shareware packages that I find really useful in my everyday computing life. As the number of screencasts increase, the site will expand and change to help find the information that you need.

Over to you Chuck

Chuck has a nice roundup of VLOG NEWS, inculding the story that MSNBC is now accepting citizen journalism reports.

Lots of big media companies are now soliciting Citizen Journalism pieces.

It's great for them because it's free content and it's good for the Citizen Journalist becuase they can say that their report was shown on MSNBC for example.

But, they should at least pay something for a good video. At least put out the possibility that you might get paid something for being there at the right time. Maybe pay something in the range that current stringers get for video submissions. I don't even know what that might be, but it must be better than nothing.

Big media is laughing all the way to the bank with this kind of thing...

When I clicked on the link to the story, I found out that the story had changed.

Half-naked woman found at garbage bin behind fast-food restaurant in Miami: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

What's even worse is that the Sun Sentinel features a frame capture from their news partner, NBC 6, with the caption "Woman in Dumpster."

The NBC 6 site continues the hype by writing a headline which doesn't match the story.
Half-Naked Woman Found In Miami Dumpster
Woman May Be Victim Of Sexual Assault

POSTED: 9:12 am EDT August 19, 2005
UPDATED: 10:47 am EDT August 19, 2005

MIAMI -- Miami-Dade police say a woman found half-naked near a Dumpster Friday may be a victim of sexual battery.

A garbage truck operator found the woman by a Dumpster behind the Wendy's along the 7300 block of Northwest 36th Street in Miami-Dade County.
They owe us an apology for this.

Everyone had a good time.

Check out the photos.

A Comment on Om Malik's Broadband Blog

Om Malik's Broadband Blog - Open Media, Meet The VCs.

I found a comment on this post intriguing:
"We have a company in our portfolio that I will be writing you about shortly. It has an advanced, scalable, personalized subscription engine that enables intelligent, automatic and real-time delivery of any RSS-published multi-media content to any Internet-connected node, including software and hardware devices. As an example the “My Subscription” feature can now have customized feeds like: First 5 mts of CNBC and Bloomberg news, Traffic Conditions on 680 to Sunol, First 20 mts of Howard Stern, Music & blogs.

The correlation engine is a patent-pending, in-memory process that employs state-of-the-art algorithms to match vast patterns of personal preferences to media content AS IT IS PUBLISHED. The unique preference matching is coupled with automated delivery of multi-media content, making it the a unique if not only solution of its kind in the market today."

An interview with E-Media

Nana Siebert from E-Media, Austrias leading magazine about internet, high-tech and multimedia, interviewed me for thier next issue, which will include a big article about vlogs.

Here's the interview, since the resulting article probably won't include all of what I said and won't even be in English:
Since when is "The Carol & Steve Show" online?

I started putting The Carol and Steve Show online on January 1, 2005.

What's the idea behind it - and why is it such a huge success?

The idea behind The Carol and Steve Show was to get my wife involved with me in videoblogging. When we watch reality TV shows, she always kids me that I like to think everything is real. So we decided to do our own reality show where everything IS really real. No desert islands and no food challenges. Just real life. We just set out to record our lives and share our experiences through videoblogging.

It's become popular because people want to connect with each other. Video allows others to really get to know you. The intimacy of video gives you a glimpse into our lives. With videoblogging, the people who are watching The Carol and Steve Show on a weekly basis, get to interact with us and other viewers through the comments area associated with each new video. How many TV stars can talk back to viewers?

How many people visit your vlog per day/month?

I average a few hundred visitors per day with some days reaching over one thousand. My videos get between 500-5,000 views each. That's not counting the additional viewers I get on TV via Akimbo, which is delivering my videos to their subscribers and OMN.org which displays my videos to their online audience.

What's your fascination behind it?

The thing that a lot of people don't see when looking at the surface, of videos on the net, is the community that has developed around videoblogging. This community develops through people leaving comments on videos, linking to each other when they watch a video that they like, and joining in on the Yahoo! Videoblogging Group.

I've made real friendships with people around the world. Some of these people I have met in person, and upon meeting them for the first time, it feels like I am meeting an old friend.

Is it difficult to create new content - or why not?

Creating new content is easy. That's because I'm just capturing life as it happens. There isn't any pre-production involved, no script writing and no rehersals. What you see is real life.

A lot of the time I use a Canon S400 digital camera which also shoots video. This allows me to carry my camera in my pocket and shoot video at a moments notice. Also, since I'm capturing video to a compact flash card, there's no delay in getting the footage onto my computer like there is with video cameras that use miniDV tapes.

Why - in your opinion - are Vlogs the next big thing on the internet?

Vlogs give people a voice. Vlogging gives people a distribution method that isn't controlled by others. Vlogging allows people to get feedback on their productions. Vlogging brings people together. Vlogging makes the world smaller.

Vlogging is the next big thing on the internet because it promotes the ability to get to know people in other countries on a personal level.

Vlogging brings pen pal corresponding to a whole new level, and allows the whole world to join in on the conversation.

Which Vlogs do you like - except your own one, of course...

Here's a page where I list a few of my favorite vlogs

Podcasting: Monetize it

Gillmor Gang dissects the emerging podshow:
"Bloom also said that his podcasting model is different than blogs–he isn't looking for 100 million content creators. Instead, he prefers 15,000 content creators and 100 million listeners, and demand driven programming."

"Today, when you lose a customer, you don’t lose just that customer, you risk losing that customer’s friends. And thanks to the internet and blogs and consumer rate-and-review services, your customers have lots and lots of friends all around the world."
He then goes on to give Michael Dell some good advice.

That's Not Right: Bank of America Sign In

I went over to the Bank of America | Home Page | Online Banking Sign In and noticed that the URL of the page was a standard http, instead of the secure https that I'm used to seeing.

Bank of America explains:
Browser security indicators

You may notice when you are on our home page that some familiar indicators do not appear in your browser to confirm the entire page is secure. Those indicators include the small "lock" icon in the bottom right corner of the browser frame and the "s" in the Web address bar (for example, "https").

To provide the fastest access to our home page for all of our millions of customers and other visitors, we have made signing in to Online Banking secure without making the entire page secure. Again, please be assured that your ID and passcode are secure and that only Bank of America has access to them.
So anyone could set up a non secure page and then post a text message that says, "Really, trust us, go ahead, don't worry about anything, we've got it covered."

The whole reason for those security indicators is to give us an indication that the page is secure.

Hey Bank of America, if you're concerend about providing fast access to a secure sign on, how about giving us a dedicated Online Banking Sign In page with the standard security indicators?

One of the reasons I feel so good is that I have something that I am involved in, excited about and look forward to. You guessed it, it's blogging."

Propaganda Podcasting Software

Scoble says that Propaganda Podcasting Software is:
... the coolest podcasting tool I've seen yet. Wow. This gives you a lot of control of audio files and a neat interface to impress your friends with. Far more than I need, but way better than Adam Curry's software or what I've seen from Evan Williams so far.
Since I don't want to use Regedit to make Castblaster work, I'll try this.

Update:
Castblaster is now dead to me.

I just installed Propaganda on Carol's Dell Laptop, and it ran right 'out of the box.'

Plugged in a microphone and Propoganda recorded the audio with no problems.

At first glance, here are some reasons that I like it:

1. It works on a Dell laptop without requiring me to mod the system using regedit.
2. Allows you to record seperate clips and then edit them together on a timeline.
3. Has a feature for you to make transitions between audio segments.
4. Has inbuilt sound effects that you can drop onto the timeline.

Instead of being a straight one shot recorder like Castblaster, this audio recording program is a lot more like Final Cut Pro. It allows you to record a bunch of audio clips and edit them together. Looks sweet.

I'll be testing this some more...

Blazing fast!

Broadband Reports Speed Test.
The Comcast cable guy just left and things still were slow.

I just ran another test and whoa!

Check out these results:

"2005-08-11 15:31:18 EST: 8074 / 680"

He installed a new modem. Motorola Surfboard SB5120.

That seemed to do the trick, although he did say there were issues in the area of getting high speed access. He told me to watch it until Monday and and if it's still slow, to call in.

Here's hoping it remains fast.

Moving? Verizon makes it offline

Verizon - Move Service Authentication.
Using this page over at the Verizon site with either FireFox or MS Internet Explorer results in a page hang.

Doing business with the phone company over the phone is easier than doing it online.

Congratulations to Sumner Delaney for being my Verizon Customer Service Representative of the day!
