Lisa Nova is not Real!

Advertising Age - MediaWorks - CBS Doesn't Get Much Back Talk From YouTubers:
"A steady YouTube contributor, a character named Lisa Nova who posts updates as to how her fictitious singing career is developing, posted a video seven hours before the Richard Simmons clip went up, 'Lisa Nova's Life is About to Change & So Can Yours,' and had received 491 comments."
I'm crushed. Thanks Advertising Age for shattering the dream.

Videoblog: 2006 Word of the Year

Merriam-Webster Online: Vote for the 2006 Word of the Year. It's a popularity contest for word of the year:
"We're trying something a little different this year. Instead of reviewing millions of searches in the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary to find our most frequently looked-up words, we're asking you to submit your choice for the one single word that sums up 2006."
Vote Videoblog.

Note:
It looks like you can vote multiple times which is going to skew the results.

Jesse Cooper Wants 25 cents for College

Jesse Cooper, a 19 year old college student at Middle Tennessee State University has created what he calls a micro-scholarship. He's looking for people to send him 25 cents to help him pay for college.

He contacted me to check out his site, and I gave him a few ideas, which he implemented right away. That's smart. Asking for help from those that have experience implementing blogs.

One thing I asked him to check was PayPal fees, since it seemed to me that he might end up owing PayPal with 25 cent donations and PayPal fees for credit cards, 1.9% to 2.9% + $0.30 USD.

It turns out that PayPal has a micropayments option for small payments, 5% + $0.05 per transaction. Now he's using that.

Reminds me of Savekaryn.com who ended up with a book deal.

The Office Writers Act

They gave at 'The Office' — twice - Los Angeles Times:
"If NBC's comedy 'The Office' feels like nothing else on television, it may be because the actors and writers are so often on the same page. In fact, they're frequently the same people."
I love The Office.

New Girls on the Block

A web intern at Boston Magazine writes to tell me about an article in the current issue about Girl Authority called The Tween Machine:
"Coming at you straight out of the Sudbury schoolyards, Girl Authority is on the brink of celebrity. Or not. And it’s not just the band’s future on the line: The girls’ unlikely indie patron, Rounder Records, also has a lot riding on their hitting it big."
They opened for the Dresden Dolls in April.

This is an interesting story. Kids making music.

The MPAA defines a home theater

BBspot - MPAA Lobbying for Home Theater Regulations:
"The MPAA is lobbying congress to push through a new bill that would make unauthorized home theaters illegal. The group feels that all theaters should be sanctioned, whether they be commercial settings or at home."
What's scary about this story is that it seems real, even after reading the whole thing. What tipped me off was the next story on the sidebar, "MPAA to Thwart Pirates by Making All Movies Suck."

Enchanted Village is Broken

Flickr photo by Abby

Lights Shut Off On Holiday Tradition:
"..this year, with little fanfare, word spread that the Enchanted Village would not be open this season. The city said more than half of the display's parts are broken.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino may have saved this tradition in the past, but this year he's not talking. A spokesperson said that the parts are very old and cannot easily be replaced."
I guess the city spokeperson has not seen Animal House:

Bluto: Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
Otter: Germans?
Boon: Forget it, he's rolling.
Bluto: And it ain't over now. 'Cause when the goin' gets tough...
[thinks hard]
Bluto: the tough get goin'! Who's with me? Let's go!
The first thing I thought about when I heard that the Enchanted Village has broken parts was the creative community.

Let's think outside the box here.

We've got a community of artists, engineers, students, bloggers and more who could come together and put on a show. Call Mickey Rooney. Call Phil Torrone. Call Bre Pettis. Call Ravi Jain. Call Amy Carpenter.

Chris Pirillo is Brilliant

YouTube vs. Google Video vs. Revver ~ Chris Pirillo:
"The idea here is that you have to press play on the following videos (in vertical order) so that they all stream to you at the same time. You may need to adjust the volume on each respective network, though. Press play on the top (YouTube) video, then immediately press play on the second (Google Video), and then press play on the third (Revver). Bam, bam, bam - and you should see ‘em playing back simultaneously."

Mobil not Hess

In yesterday's post about Cigarettes at the Gas Station I identified the station as a Hess station, but in fact it was a Mobil station.

Hess responded to my complaint asking for the exact station location and after thinking about it, I realized that is was a Mobil station and not Hess.

I've revised the earlier post and notified Hess.

Thank Hess.

Off On A Tangent is Six!

I just realized that my first post here on Off On A Tangent was six years ago on November 9th, 2000:
Today we had a really good meeting and lunch. The best part of the day was when our meeting went off on a tangent and we started discussing the current election. After lots of talk about Saturday Night Live and the Hamburger sketch (watch it in the screening room Season 3-5 3/18/78), we decided that this stuff had to be logged somewhere.
That's when my first blogger blog started.

I hand-coded my own blog from November 18, 1997 to April 1, 1999 as a daily update for Karlson and McKenzie radio show listeners.

Cigarettes at the Gas Station

selfportrait.11.24.06 - habit by karmagrrrl, uploaded from flickr.

A few weeks ago I saw a man at the Hess Mobile gas station in West Roxbury pumping gas with his car engine running while smoking a cigarette and talking on a cell phone.

It was the trifecta of terror!

Instead of confronting him, because he would have beaten me up, I told the gas station attendant about it.

She replied that they have an inbuilt sprinkler system that would handle it.

You would think that the attendant should actually handle it BEFORE the explosion.

Videoblogging is Vaudeville

Confessions of an Aca/Fan: The Official Weblog of Henry Jenkins: Youtube and the Vaudeville Aesthetic:
"Vaudeville was an actor-centered mode of production. There was no director who could build an ensemble piece. Actors chose their own material, refined their own skills, and lived and died entirely on the basis of their ability to connect one on one with the audience. It was a form which placed a high premium on virtuosity -- on the ability of the performer to impress the spectator with their mastery. Similarly, YouTube is a space of individualized expression. This video is about nothing if it isn't about the mastery and virtuosity of these young performers. We watch breathlessly to see what they will do next and if they can pull off a high risk performance."
Brilliant.

Henry Jenkin's Introduction to the Futures of Entertainment conference, at MIT, was the best presentation of the day.

Credit card use at new meters canceled

City halts use of credit cards at new meters - The Boston Globe:
"Boston's new multispace parking meters along Newbury Street stopped accepting credit and debit cards yesterday, as city officials acknowledged that their minimum payment requirement appeared to violate Visa and MasterCard regulations.

Tinlin said city officials were not aware of the rule until the Globe reported on it yesterday. 'It has never come up,' he said.
Amazing.
Tinlin said he didn't know whether the city could afford to alter the meters to allow people to pay with credit or debit cards for whatever amount of time they want.

'It's good government that you want to cover your costs,' he said. 'With every transaction, there's a transaction fee.'

Tinlin said he didn't know the size of the city's credit card transaction fee."
Even more amazing.

Can you paint when it's cold outside?

The big question around the Garfield household these days is whether or not you can paint when it's this cold outside.

Our painter sent over this link, with information about the primer he's using, so we can sleep at night: Exterior house primers from Sherwin-Williams:
"PrepRite - Quick Seal Alkyd Primer

* Assures uniform appearance of topcoats
* Fast drying
* Seals stains from water, graffiti, smoke, tannin, knots and sap
* Topcoat with latex or oil paints
* Can be applied down to 40 degrees F
* Ideal for use on wood, hardboard, PVC piping and previously painted surfaces"
Now that's a good painter.

Parking Meters: Piggybacking and Minimum Charges

Bruce Mohl writes in today's Globe, New meters raising revenues and hackles.

From the article:parkeon meter
After paying, parkers get a receipt showing when their time expires. The meters recommend posting the receipt inside the vehicle's curbside window using the removable sticky backside as tape.
Umm, recommend? Sounds like a requirement to me.

Two things he writes about make me mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.

Piggybacking and Minimum Charges.

First Piggybacking.
The article states:
The city had projected about a 20 percent increase overall because drivers no longer could piggyback on others' time.
I'll have to go down to Newbury Street and research the issue, but doesn't is sound like the driver leaving the space that has time on it could hand over his/her receipt to the new driver taking the space so that they could use the remaining time?

I'd do that. Boston is a friendly city, right?

Second, Minimum Charges.
The meter requires a two hour minimum purchase with a credit card. Based on my research it looks like the minimum charge requirement is prohibited by credit card companies.

In the article, Daniel Hofmann , deputy director of Boston's Transportation Department says:
...the city decided to require a two-hour purchase with credit cards because of the convenience offered and the fees involved in processing payments.
The problem for the city is that credit card companies do not allow minimum charge requirements.

I found this information about minimum charge requirements.
Visa's and MasterCard's regulations prohibit minimum charge amounts. American Express's regulations do not explicitly prohibit minimum charges, but its policy is to discourage any merchant practices that create a "barrier to acceptance."

From the official Visa USA site:Visa Card
"Minimum Purchase

Visa merchants are not permitted to establish minimum transaction amounts, even on sale items. They also are not permitted to charge you a fee when you want to use your Visa card.

If you run into a problem like this with a merchant, please notify the financial institution that issued you your Visa card. These institutions have access to the appropriate Visa rules and regulations and can help you document and file your complaint. You'll find their address and/or telephone number on your Visa statement. Their telephone number may also appear on the back of the card itself."
Sounds like we have some work to do.

Please help me out and make some calls about the minimum purchase amount.

If you are down on Newbury Street and use a meter, see if you can give your receipt to the next car entering your spot. Observe how the system works. Is there an easy way to leave your recipt with unused time for the new person?

Please post your thoughts and observations in the comments here.

Update:
Boston.com has a forum where people are discussing this story.

The Lesson of Lonelygirl

Wired News: The Secret World of Lonelygirl:
"So far, Hollywood has not exactly embraced Beckett and Flinders. With CAA's help, they landed meetings with studios and TV networks. But their first sit-down with a major broadcaster was, Goodfried says, an 'exercise in futility.' Beckett tried to explain to the executive that the central theme of online entertainment was interactivity, as opposed to the passivity of television. He wanted to create shows in which the line between reality and fiction is blurred, where viewers can correspond with the characters and actually become involved in the story by posting their own videos. The exec responded by walking them through his fall lineup and pointing out that the network's Web site had great supplemental video material for the season's upcoming shows.

Beckett is clearly frustrated. 'The Web isn't just a support system for hit TV shows,' he says. 'It's a new medium. It requires new storytelling techniques. The way the networks look at the Internet now is like the early days of TV, when announcers would just read radio scripts on camera. It was boring in the same way all this supplemental material is boring.'

What's needed, he says, is content that's built specifically for the Web. It doesn't need to be lit like a film -- that would make it feel less real. The camera work should be simple. There shouldn't be a disembodied third-person camera -- a character is always filming the action. Each episode needs to be short, no more than three minutes. 'You wouldn't show a sitcom at a movie theater, right?' Beckett says. 'You make movies for the big screen, sitcoms for TV, and something else entirely for the Internet. That's the lesson of Lonelygirl15.'"
Let's learn the lesson and make media.

Gyroball is a joke

After reading the Boston Globe's Business section you'd think that Daisuke Matsuzaka really throws gyroball.

Kimberly Blanton writes, Japanese TV crews seek a home fit for a pitcher - The Boston Globe:
"This week, Red Sox management agreed to pay $51 million for the right to negotiate with Matsuzaka, whose signature pitch is the 'gyroball.'"
Wrong.

Jeff Passan has the real story, Searching for baseball's Bigfoot
The gyroball is baseball's version of alien life. No one knows if they've seen it. No one knows what it looks like. No one knows much about it. Except there's a small pocket of American fans who graze the Internet champing to see Matsuzaka, because they're all convinced that he throws a gyroball and they're all convinced it will revolutionize the sport.
Fact checking the Boston Globe so you don't have to. ;-)

How can Red Sox recoup investment in Matsuzaka?

Wiki Cake is big news in Boston Globe

From artists to spies, more going wiki on Web - The Boston Globe:
"Jamaica Plain artists Ravi Jain and Sonia Targontsidis , have launched Wiki-Cake, which they called an online experiment in collective cake-baking. 'It's kind of like picking out your wedding cake, only with a lot of people,' Targontsidis said."
What's ironic is that Jain's Wikake wiki was deleted from Wikipedia and the collaborative cake making is happening on a blog.
"We're just really trying to embrace new media, and we've been fascinated with wikis the past few months," said Jain.
I applaud my friend Ravi's artistic look into the collaborative nature of wiki's but question whether the Globe makes it clear that there isn't a real wiki involved in the cake making, just a virtual artistic wiki happening in real space.

Does it mater?

It would have been really nice if the Globe gave a link to Ravi and Sonia's Wikaklog blog.

The Boston Globe continues to write about websites without linking to them. It's not neighborly.

Here's a link to Dan Bricklin's WikiCalc which also didn't get a link in the article.

How many times do I have to make blog posts about the Boston Globe not taking the time to link to websites?

Message to Boston Globe writers:

When you write an article about a website, blog or wiki, include the URL in the story. The Globe's online system will automatically recognize it as a link and make it clickable.

Please!

I'd comment on the article, but the Globe website does not allow comments.
