Videographers Stand By

Chris Ware: This American Life:
"Chris Ware animates a segment from the new Showtime edition of This American Life. It’s the story of a class that becomes obsessed with video-taping everything everyone does… until, like Lord of the Flies, things go awry."

Steve TV is oddly addictive.

It's my experiment in life streaming video.

I'm capturing longer video moments with a Nokia N95 and publishing to Steve TV.

Mike Hudack's Rules for Video Sharing Sites

I'm all in favor of sharing under the CC license. But this is a
complete violation.

Pyro.tv has all my videos and brands them with their logo.

No link back to my page, or to the permalink of this post.

They are violating the CC license by not displaying the same license I
have on my site.

It's all wrong.

If you want to display my video on your site, please follow these rules. If you have a question, ask. Thanks.

Mike is on the case. He's going to share Video Vertigo: Video Aggregation Best Practices with them.

Steve TV

I've been testing out the video features of the Nokia N95. Inspired by Justin.TV, I've started making a few life streaming videos called Steve TV.

Andrea Lekushoff - Originally uploaded on flickr by stevegarfield.

I met Andrea at The Strategy Paradox Meet-Up at Vintage in Boston last night.

She sent along some info on the Okanagan wine region in British Columbia for me. Sounds like a fun place to visit.

Mission Hill Winery (founder of Mike's Hard Lemonade established this winery), is worth the visit:

Mission Hill Winery (great lunch with a gorgeous view)

Quails' Gate Winery (great lunch or dinner with gorgeous view)

Bloggers and Staff Reporters on the Same Page

Boston Bloggers' Summit (Version 2.0) - Originally uploaded on flickr by stevegarfield.

I went to a meeting tonight about the new free paper that's launching in Boston soon called BostonNow. In this picture, Editor-in-Chief John Wilpers is talking to bloggers about how they can contribute to the paper. We had a far ranging discussion with lots of ideas shared from everyone.

Bloggers and Staff Reporters on the Same Page
BostonNOW is going to have blogger content on most pages of the paper, right along side BostonNOW reporter's content.

BostonNOW Mock Up

Your Photo on Page One
If you take a picture and submit it, it could go on the cover. Full page. I can't imagine that ever happening in the Globe or Herald. Reporters from the Digg and Boston Magazine were there to cover the story.

Half Price Events

I just signed up for Goldstar Events.
"Their site offers half-price tickets to events near you, like theatre, comedy, sports, live music and spas. It's free to sign up too."
FNX sent me an email about it. Good marketing.

If you join, I get credits:
1-19: $1 credit each
20: $5 bonus credit
50: $10 bonus credit
100: $20 bonus credit
You can join if you are from California, Las Vegas, Chicago, Washington DC, New York or Boston.

New Newspaper in Boston and The Strategy Paradox

Boston's new free newspaper BostonNOW is having an open house tonight: Upcoming.org: Boston Bloggers' Summit (Version 2.0) at BostonNOW Offices (Tuesday, March 27, 2007).

Mark Glaser just wrote about this on his blog: How the Online Newspaper Can Become a Community Hub.

(Disclosure: I've done some consulting for BostonNOW.)

I'm going to try to get there early so I can also make it to:

The Strategy Paradox Boston Meet-Up, 6 - 8 pm, Vintage Lounge, 72 Broad Street:
Deloitte Consulting LLP is hosting a Meet-Up for Michael Raynor, author of the recently published The Strategy Paradox and co-author of the bestselling book The Innovator's Solution, with Clayton M. Christensen.
CC Chapman is planning to go, as are Bryan Person and Jack Hodgson.

CC wants to meet Eli Singer from Toronto, and Eli has a Yahoo! T-Shirt he grabbed for me at SXSW, so I have an extra incentive to get there.

Boston Water and Sewer Commission

Boston Water and Sewer Commission has rolled out a new online service that lets you view your water consumption online.

I wonder how much money and time went in to that.

You still can't have them automatically deduct your monthly payment amount from a credit card or checking account.

Who is setting the priorities over there?

Can you add value to a Charlie Card Online?

I went over to the MBTA - Fares & Passes page, on the MBTA website, and don't see any way to add value to a Charlie Card online.

What!!?!?!?!??!

Home from California

California - Originally uploaded on flickr by stevegarfield.

I'm back from California. It was a great trip and I enjoyed hanging out with the videoblogging community in Austin, Scottsdale and San Jose.

Twitter really showed what it's valuable for at SXSW where it helped me navigate the daily sessions and nighttime events.

It also worked well at VON, where we used it to meet up and comment about the sessions we were sitting in.

Dina and I organized a dinner at Gordon Biersch via twitter and we had a great turnout for that. I love Gordon Biersch and ate there three nights while in San Jose.

It was difficult for a few days there when I lost my voice, but it came back about 50% when I did my videoblogging presentation. Yay!

Now I've got a head cold and am going to bed.

A Newsworthy Moment - DEVAL PARTICK
VON- A New Look At Content.003.jpg

This next video shows how people are going to be able to capture newsworthy moments and share them, moments that would otherwise be lost.

This was an exciting moment, and I was there with the nokia n93, that I had in my pocket, and was able to capture and share it.

This speech was not posted to the campaign website or shown on tv that day, I had it posted that night.

I got comments on this video, that it helped people make up their minds to vote for Deval Patrick.

VIDEO EDITING ON A TRAIN
VON- A New Look At Content.004.jpg

This video was shot and edited with a nokia n95 on a 15 minutes train ride in boston from green street to downtown crossing.

I also added credits and a music track.

Mold Took My Voice

Alec Williams just told me that the rain and the heat made the conditions ripe for a mold outbreak at SXSW.

Those that are allergic to mold, like me, have lost their voice.

Twitteriffic

I left a comment on Dave's post about twitter, The future of Twitter?:
Hi Dave,
I resisted Twitter for a long time. In fact I sent Chris Brogan a text message to tell him I was getting on a train. I didn't get it.

Now I do.

It's like the IRC backchannel at a conference. There's value in it to enhance the presentation. But if you aren't there to see how it works, you might not get it.

A lot of people got it this week at SXSW.

It's like an extension of Podtech's Bloghaus. In that case you knew where all the vloggers were going to be.

With twitter, you could jack into the net, join the borg mind, and see what was happening all around you.

Scott Beale was at the Yahoo party, we followed, then he moved on and we followed...

Without twitter a lot of people would have been lost.

I also used it to see what session at SXSW to go to... Chusk Olsen was sitting in a Bill Paxton session, I went there...

Chuck was in the politics session.. ahhh... I saw where he was and moved over to sit there...

It's very cool.

Engage Makers

What can I do to engage a culture of making things? at I Make Things:
"The question I brought to SXSW this year is “What can I do to engage a culture of making things?” There are a few things that make sense so far. They seem obvious and simple, but these principles lead to interesting ideas!

-Give them something they want and can use. Flickr is my hero.
-Interact with them. Workbookproject rocked my world!
-Include them. JPGMAG rules at this.
-Make it fun. - My photogamer project is starting and is super fun!
-Include elements of a game. Ze is a master of this!"
