‘I don’t think you ever get over it’:
Kyle Van De Giesen — the quarterback who led North Attleborough to a state Super Bowl Championship in 1997, a St. Anselm College graduate who fulfilled his dream of becoming a Marine pilot — was about to leave Afghanistan after his third deployment, returning home for the birth of his second child.

He was on his final mission last fall when his AH-1 Cobra collided with another Marine helicopter over Helmand Province just before sunrise Oct. 26. His son, Colin, was born four days after he was buried.

Inadvertent Message: TT Bar

I'm not sure why Ten Tables felt the need to add the name "TT Bar" to thier sign and awning. Lots of restaurants have bars inside but don't give the bar it's own name and identity.

TT Bar? I just adds clutter to the sign.

Down the street Costello's tried the same thing in reverse, trying to add a restaurant name to the bar. In the end, they went back to the establishment name Costello's on the outside signage.

Ten Tables and TT Bar should just go back to Ten Tables.
The place isn't even big enough for two names.

One more thing:
See how the Ten Tables sign is over the right hand side door? Makes you think there's both a bar and restaurant enterance, but you can only enter on the left hand side which is a combined enterance for both the bar and restaurant.

There's a Very Well Known Video Blogger in Boston: Steve Garfield

Dan Kennedy Mentions Steve Garfield on Beat The Press:

Dan Kennedy talks about how I start all my videos with "This is Steve Garfield from SteveGarfield.com, so no matter where my video goes, there's a way back to my site. He says I make it difficult for people to plagiarise my video by doing that.

Thanks Dan.

Steve Garfield’s Plan for Social Media inspired by Chris Brogan's Author’s Plan for Social Media

Chris Brogan made a great post about the steps he took to promote his books, An Author’s Plan for Social Media.

Hey look, Chris has a new logo too:

Chris Brogan Logo

I left a comment, on Chris's blog, outlining some of the things I've done to promote my book, Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business.

Inbound Marketing Disclosed: Behind the Scenes
Promoting Books: Inbound Marketing, Crush It, Trust Agents, Get Seen, New Rules

Here's an expanded version of my comment. I'll be adding to this post.

Here are some of my efforts promoting my book Get Seen.

VIDEO
One of the best things I did was make an introductory video about the book and get it posted on the book's Amazon.com page:

http://bit.ly/GetSeen

I've heard a lot of good feedback about that video.

When deciding what type of landing page to set up; for my book, I asked my twitter followers what they liked better, A splash page with a big photo marketing blurbs, or a community page where people could see that I would interact.

NING COMMUNITY
I ended up settign up a NING community for my book.

It's here:

http://getseen.ning.com

And I made a URL redirect to it using this URL:

http://stevegarfield.com/getseen

That way If I ever decided to change my book's site, people can use hte same link and be directed to the new page.

On the NING site I have a blog where I've posted updates. These are new developments that have come out since the book was released. The way I set this up is to grab posts tagged with "get seen" from my delicious page.

TWITTER and FACEBOOK
I set up special twitter and facebook sites for the book. That's where I post more promotional book news so I don't clutter up my regular twitter and facebook accounts with all book news all the time. I'm not sure if I'd do that again and might just concentrate on my regular twitter and facebook accounts. That's still an open question.

WHERE TO BUY - BLOG POST
Following Chris' example, I set up a Where to Buy Get Seen page. It's a blog post.

PRESS MENTIONS
I'm using a site called profilactic to keep track of press mentions and interviews. Makes it very easy to add links with custom descriptions.

PUBLISHER RESOURCES
One thing that I've been very happy about is hte support I've gotten from my Publisher, Wiley. I've asked them to help out in areas where they have expertise.

A few things they've helped me with:

- Collateral for the book including huge posters and bookmarks

Videoblogging Webinar 5/20/10: Brightcove and Get Seen
Get Seen Poster Board used in recent Brightcove Webinar

- Custom banner ads

Get Heard, Get Noticed, Get Seen
Custom Banner Ad

- Custome magazine advertisements

Get Video. Get It Online. Get Results.
Custom Magazine Ad

Those are some of the ways I've promoted my book. Let me know if you have any questions.

Best Radio Ever: Tivoli Audio PAL Radio

I just replaced the batteries in the best radio ever, the Tivoli Audio PAL Radio.

I've owned this radio since it came out. I bought it because we didn't have a power plug in our old bathroom, and I wanted a radio in there.

The Tivoli Audio PAL Radio is great for the bathroom beacuse you don't have to plug it in, it runs of rechargable batteries, and has great sound.

The Tivoli Audio PAL Radio also has an AUX jack that supports the iPod. IT's got a headphone jack too.

The little speaker is great and I like the retro styling.

Note:
My model is so old that they've since come out with an iPAL version. I think it's pretty much the same.

Watch Jimmy with Jimmy

Watch Jimmy With Jimmy. May 24-28.

Jimmy Fallon's Late Night Experiment to let viewers watch Late Night With Jimmy Fallon with Jimmy Fallon was a success on it's first night.

You could actually 'Watch Jimmy With Jimmy.'

Fallon to watch his show with fans online:
"We're always trying to stay ahead of the curve in how we interact with our audience. I'm thinking of this as a real-time interactive DVD commentary -- and it's going to be a ton of fun. I'm just hoping I can stay awake all week long," Fallon said in a statement Thursday.

What I liked about Watch Jimmy with Jimmy:

1. It worked. Ustream was solid and both the audio and video was clear. That's a success. At one point there were over 7,000 people watching.

2. You could hear what Jimmy was saying and also get a behind the scenes look at his interaction with the writers. That was interesting. We heard them chat about what skits they were working on for the future. I like that kind of thing.

The broadcast stream made me want to be in the room with them.

3. They had the comment stream up on a big screen for everyone to read and comment on.

4. Jimmy's producer, Gavin Purcell, read selected comments to Jimmy during the breaks, which he responded to. Cool.

What I didn't like about Watch Jimmy with Jimmy:

1. In Boston, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno went long, so nothing was synced up.

2. Although advertised as Watch Jimmy With Jimmy, and delivering on that promise, I wanted more interaction. Watching someone watch TV isn't the greatest interactive experience. I hope based on this feedback they can try some ideas to interact with the viewers more.

3. The Ustream chat box was small and would be better if it was larger or enabled as a pop up.

What I'd like to see next:

1. Like I said above, try some different ideas during the week to keep it interesting. You might think of 'Watch Jimmy With Jimmy' as a show of it's own and rely less on what's being broadcast. Maybe have some planned segments during the commercial break. Web extras.

2. Beyond this format, I'd like to see more of the original videoblogging style behind the scenes.

3. Experiment with bringing in live streaming video from viewers. That's something that I've been exploring.

4. Do an earlier live streaming show, like at 7:00 PM, prior to the live broadcast. Give us a peek at what's coming up and interact directly with viewers. That would be funa nd I would have to stay up so late.

Thanks for breaking ne ground in late night TV.

Grey's Anatomy: Death and All His Friends

If you missed the final episode of Grey's Anatomy, you can watch it here via Hulu.

Would be nice if I could push this to my TV.

I know I can hook up my MacBook Pro to my TV with a DVI to HDMI Cable, and some external speakers, but that requires unmounting my drives, unplugging all my cables and carrying it downstairs. Not a big deal, but I'm spoiled by pushing Amazon movies to the TiVo.

Hulu desktop supports the Apple remote:
NBC's online video site, Hulu, has launched a desktop app that allows Mac users to watch Hulu content without using a web browser, and with full Apple Remote support.
I might just watch this re-run of Grey's on my TV.

Update:
Ended up watching the final episode on my MacBook Pro, with it sitting on the footrest. The HD TV was off. Couldn't get the DVI to HDMI connection to work, and it's worked before, and I know what I'm doing. I gave up.

Watching on the laptop was fine.

STAND OUT- GET NOTICED & ADVANCE YOUR CAREER - AUTHOR & LEADING VIDEO BLOGGING EXPERT STEVE GARFIELD:
You've invested in a professional resume and cover letter, now what? You are connected, using Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, but should you be doing more in your career to show case your talents, establish your personal brand? What is your social media IQ? This week's podcast is from our recent Canadian Career Development Webinar with one of leading social media experts, Steve Garfield. Steve is the author of Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building your Business.

Steve launched his career in traditional media and was a radio producer on a Boston morning show for a number of years. He became interested in blogging, online video (pre Youtube) and new media. Fast forward a few years, Steve now advises Fortune 500 brands such as AT&T, Kodak, Nokia, and Panasonic, and media outlets including CBS, NBC and PBS on how to use social media to promote their products and services. He shared with us how an individual can use social media to raise your personal and professional profile.

Steve shared "In busy organizations getting noticed is becoming more challenging, however social media skills is a new skill that professionals need to develop and embrace" I couldn't agree more, I can remember when email was first entering the market some were very slow to adapt. This is the same today with social media such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Youtube. Here is why I think this is important. Your social media skill-set will have a direct impact on your job search results and your long-term career success-guaranteed!
I had fun doing this interview with Alan Kearns.

Boston.com liked my Belt Sander Racing video so much that they posted a link to it on their front page, as a sidebar to their story, and embeded in their blog. The part that annoys me the most is that they are using my video without attribution.

Kindle Popular Highlights Now Shared Online and on Facebook and Twitter

Amazon Kindle Popular Highlights takes reading social:
Amazon has starting rolling out its latest 2.5 Kindle update and with it a new feature called Popular Highlights.

What some will either class as incredibly annoying or the future of reading, users will now be able to see where other people have highlighted text within a book, very much like reading a used text book.
For me, this is very interesting because I can now go to a web page and see which passages in my book, Get Seen, are most popular.

Amazon kindle Highlights - Get Seen
Most popular highlights from Get Seen, Search Results Page

You can visit the highlighted results page and look around yourself.

My friend Len Edgerly is reading Get Seen on his Kindle and he's turned on the twitter interface, so the quote he likes get's posted to the kindle popular highlights page, and it gets posted to his twitter feed.

Amazon Kindle Highlights Tweet
Twitter post

Here's the link to the individual highlight in Len's tweet.

Note:
Len also shared the link on his Facebook Wall.

One problem with the current implementation is that on the kindle popular highlights page, the permalink of each post is not displayed, so there's no way for the reader to share that link, unless they happen to see it on the reader's twitter feed, if they've enabled twitter sharing.

This will be an easy fix for amazon.

What do you think about social sharing what you read?
