Eventstreaming: The Seed Of A Revolution

Duncan Riley at TechCrunch reports on what happened yesterday during the iPhone launch, and what it means for the future of live streaming, Eventstreaming: The Seed Of A Revolution:
"Eventstreaming is the missing link in Web 2.0’s challenge to network television."

Here are some of my real time observations that I posted to twitter from yesterday:
"This is just an indication of the future of news reporting"

"Streaming video live is history repeating. radio/tv <-> web audio/web video. People are experimenting now. Give it time..."

"iJustine is calling her mom on an iPhone and I'm watching it LIVE http://www.justin.tv/ijustine "The iPhone is awesome""

" Mogulus joins USTREAM.TV reporting about iPhone from the street today. 336 viewers right now. http://iphone.mogulus.com/ "
Whether or not you cared about the iPhone launch itself, the live streamers made it feel like you were there. In addition to that, if the live streamers were paying attention to their chat rooms, you could participate in the event remotely.

Breaking: Thompson to Replace Cheney

David Weinberger buries the lede over on his Joho the Blog: The common sense candidate:
Fred Thompson, the actor slated to be appointed vice president after Cheney resigns because of health issues later this summer.
Now that would make things even more interesting.

Next New TV

Herb Scannell of Next New Networks summarizes his speech from the OMMA conference, “New TV Changes the Game vs. Video Changes The Game”:
“New TV Changes the Game vs. Video Changes The Game” cause video is “here today, gone today”, and with “TV”, shows change but “networks” last forever. Sent love to Om Malick’s blog “New Tee Vee”, a fave of mine, and inspiration for language I liked and that term was more in spirit with what we want to accomplish at Next New: borrow the good practices of TV—it’s dependable unlike video that just happens, it’s branded so you know what you’re getting, and it’s consistent and reliable but not predictable—and marry it to what people expect from the internet and take advantage of its’ functionality. That’s our “New TV”. On the latter point about the internet, our new TV follows 3 rules that we live by:
1) be real and authentic vs. slick and over authoritative. That is the aesthetic of the web and new TV vs. “Old TV” and what Josh Marshall does on Veracifier is an example citing his visit to Colbert as being evidence of this.

2) community and conversation are integral to our new TV—it’s a sublety but we don’t so much make TV for audiences as we make shows WITH audiences citing how VOD Cars, Channel Frederator and Threadbanger and others and invite audiences to contribute and that serves as catalyst for many of our shows.

3) Finally, audiences want their new TV where they are—on their blogs, profiles, community sites so we embrace it and encourage it and invite marketers to join us.
Great points.

BREAKING: Lala Exposed on CBC TV

Nathan Fielder's video Widget is on the new website for CBC TV's new show, Exposure.

The idea behind the site is that people will vote on videos and the highest rated will be shown across Canada.

That's interesting enough, but most interesting to me is the host.

It's Lara! Better known at Lala on TikiBar TV.

Tivo On Comcast DVR's in August

Shelly Palmer writes in MediaBytes 06.29.07:
TiVo announced yesterday that its software for Motorola cable boxes was accepted by Comcast, after two years of development. Starting this August, the software will be available to Comcast subscribers in the New England area as a seamless upgrade for their Comcast DVR's.
I can not wait for this upgrade. Thanks Shelly for reporting the news. let's see how long it takes Comcast to let me know about it. ;-)

Wired magazine looks awesome with me on the cover! Although unfortunately, that's the only issue I'm on the cover of.

They had an ad campaign with Xerox that allowed you to send in a photo and be on the cover of YOUR home delivery issue. I can't image that I made it on any other covers, but who knows.

I'll keep my phone line open for calls just in case... ;-)

The CNN - YouTube Debates: No Comment

The first The CNN - YouTube debate is happening on July 23rd in Charleston, South Carolina with the Democratic candidates. Citizens have been able to upload video questions to YouTube since June 14.

So far there are only 244 videos.

Why is that?

One thing that interests me is the fact that the only way to go watch the videos is to click on the Submit Your Question button on the YouTube Presidential Debates page.

Once there, you are presented with an interface that is crippled.

You'll notice that there is no place to leave comments and no rating system is visible.

Who Will Be The YouTube Of Live Video?

Just read this over at TechCrunch, Who Will Be The YouTube Of Live Video?:
"The growth of Youtube and its subsequent $1.65 billion buyout left behind a bevy of competing video sites. Since then competitors have been seeking to differentiate themselves by focusing on longer videos, higher (bitrate) quality videos, professional content, and paying their users. However, one of the more unique approaches to differentiation has been streaming live video over the internet."
I commented:

I've recently been experimenting with some live video web sites. Live can be an exciting part of video on the web.

Chris Pirillo
is using USTREAM.TV to capture live content and then post 'shows' to video sites like YouTube and blip.tv. He embeds sponsor logos and live text chat in the video. Pretty cool.

I used Operator11.com the other day for the first time and was a LIVE guest in Rome at that Vlog Camp.

Over at Kyte.tv Robert Scoble left his channel open and anyone could record a video and post it. Anyone watching could participate without moderation. It was almost real time live video commenting.

I signed up to test Mogulus, which sounds like it will allow adding clips from your PC and the web to the stream. That would be very cool, but sounds like it does not have live chat.

Having a live stream with viewers who can participate with chat and also who can switch in and become the host is real interactive video on the web. Without live it's more static. So if you are looking for true interactivity where the audience actually participates by coming on the show with video or even just chat, live is very exciting.

As soon at TV sees what is going on here, they will jump on this... They just don't understand yet.

MTV might be the first in the US where they had a video wall so viewers could ask questions live with webcams, but I think Canada had this a while ago, and the test I did with Rome was also broadcast on satellite on SkyTV. So they are ahead in that.

The important things about live video on the web are:

1. It's live and participatory vs. recorded and static. It's not really participatory unless the presence of the viewer changes the content of the show.

2. Viewers can host. This gives you true interactivity and gives people a reason to visit at certain times. Appointment viewing is back. Even though those people might just be 10% of the audience, message board history has proved that 80% of people come back to watch the 10% generate content.

3. Live Chat. More interaction to add content to the live show.

4. Connecting with others around the world. World Peace.

Spices of Life at Vlog Camp Roma

I participated in Vlog Camp Roma on a LIVE video feed from Boston using Operator11.com.

Vlog Camp Roma

This was very exciting because I was able to roll in my most recent video from Spices of Life and show people what i was talking about when I explained that I shot the show on a Nokia N93/N95, edited it in Final Cut Pro, and hosted it on blip.tv.

Watch the video of me talking about Spices of Life at Vlog Camp Roma.

Boston Globe Still Doesn't Link to Websites

Fed up, 'Sopranos' fans fill in the black - The Boston Globe:
Within hours of the "Sopranos" finale, fans logged into YouTube to swap theories about its hidden meanings. Many argued that Tony had died. Others proposed that, like the ending of the "Newhart," the final episode had all been one of Tony's dream sequences.

But most agreed on one point: Despite its ambiguity, the finale had become instantly iconic. In one YouTube video, a "Sopranos" fan presented clips from famous films as though they had been directed by David Chase. In the "Gone With the Wind" segment, Rhett turns to Scarlett and says, "Frankly my dear. . ." And then the screen goes black.
How many times to I have to blog about this?

Once again, in an article that is all about YouTube videos, the Boston Globe does not provide link to any of them.

It's just inexcusable.

I am fed up.

If you have links to any of the YouTube videos mentioned in the article, please post them in the comments.

I'm going back to finish my breakfast.

I subscribe to people, who make videos.

According to the Lost Remote blog, internet video use exploded from '06 to '07.

Many people watch videos on YouTube, and follow links that friends send them via email, IM or Twitter.

That's the viral nature of web video. One friend tells another, and so on.

There's another way to watch though. It's through free subscriptions.

One way to subscribe to videos is with iTunes. New videos are automatically delivered to you so you don't have to check for new ones.

I subscribe to friends who make videos. One is DriveTime, a talk show in a car by Jamaica Plain artist Ravi Jain.

Visit his site and watch the videos online. If you like them, leave a comment and subscribe. There's a whole community of video makers on the internet who are sharing their content online.

If you want to meet some local video makers, stop by a Boston Media Makers meeting on the first Sunday of each month at Sweet Finnish at 10 AM in Jamaica Plain. Who knows, you might even make some videos of your own after learning how easy it is.

Simonds is the life of this video party

The Globe's Here
Jonathan Levitt writes in today's Boston Globe, Simonds is the life of this video party:
For the latest episode of her new video blog, cookbook author Nina Simonds is bouncing around her kitchen throwing together what she calls the "best dumplings ever." She's funny and charmingly scatterbrained, with red ballet slippers on her feet, eye glasses perched on her head, and a voice hoarse from talking and talking and talking.

Also in the kitchen is Julie Lutts, her tall blonde recipe tester; Ingrid Schwamb, her personal assistant; Maureen Yasi, a shorter blondish recipe tester; and Steve Garfield, the quirky Jamaica Plain-based video blog pioneer who tapes the show. Everyone is laughing, cooking, getting bossed around, and mugging for the camera. It's like they're not really doing anything serious here, which is why Simonds's vlog, spicesoflife.com , is becoming a hit.
Yay!

You can watch the video, Best Chinese Dumplings Recipe Ever and Pilates, at Spices of Life.

Got a cellphone? Make a video

Spices of Life - Boston Globe
Got a cellphone? Make a video. - The Boston Globe:
Cooks use technology to liven up their recipes.

In a world where you can find anything on the Internet, the newest way to learn cooking is from a genre called vlogs (that's video blog). Chinese authority Nina Simonds is hamming it up in front of a Nokia cell phone in her videos. Former home ec teacher Kathy Maister adds animation to her kitchen basics."

Schrod with Peach Salsa

Last night carol brought home some Schrod from Legal Sea Foods so I made a version of Nina's Mahi Mahi recipe with what we had on hand.

Schrod with Salt, Pepper and Olive Oil

I coated the Schrod with Salt, Pepper and Olive Oil.

Peach Salsa

This salsa has has peaches, Lime Juice, onions, orange juice, cumin, salt, and pepper in it.

Schrod with Peach Salsa

I grilled it for 5 minutes on each side, then put the salsa on top and added some green beans.

Yummy!
