FREE PDF - J.C. Hutchins novel, 7th Son: Descent

J.C. Hutchins novel, 7th Son: Descent - 10 chapter "Special Edition" PDF excerpt

The promotional email I received for 7th Son: Descent contained this excerpt:
For two years, J.C. chased publishers the traditional way. Unable to find a literary agent to represent his human cloning thriller -- but convinced his novels were worthy of an audience -- he took to the "podwaves" in 2006 and released the 7th Son trilogy as free serialized podcast audiobooks. A thriving community soon formed around J.C. and his fiction. By 2007, it was 40,000 members strong.

In ‘07, J.C. asked St. Martin's Press to consider 7th Son for publication. The publisher saw the thriving grassroots platform J.C. had created, and accepted. Nearly seven years to the day of writing the novel’s opening lines -- The president of the United States is dead. He was murdered in the morning sunlight by a four-year-old boy... -- the first book in the trilogy will be released on Oct. 27.
I was impressed by J.C.'s story and interested in this promotional technique since I'm looking into promotional activities for my book. In return for making this post, an ad for my book, Get Seen, is included in the free PDF.

New Media Tools for Journalism Slides - 10/23/09

Best. Class. Ever.

I taught New Media Tools for Journalism at BU today and had the best time. The students were enthusiastic and excited to learn new ways to tell stories using a cellphone. This class could have gone on all day long since there's so much to cover. We had lots of fun using the new tools in class.

New Media Tools For Journalism

In this class we take a tour though the tools you can use to report stories with a cellphone. Text, photo, audio and video, using tools like twitter, flickr, utterli, blogtalkradio, ustream, and qik. Auto post to twitter when you send a photo in to flickr.

These two tweets are what it's all about:

Thanks to the students for making it a great class.

Here are my slides:

What Does the #fb tag on Twitter Mean?

The #fb tag on Twitter means that your Twitter posts with the #fb tag will also be posted to your Facebook status.

In order to get this to work, you need to set up the Selective Twitter Status application up on Facebook.
Three Steps

Step 1:

Go to the Selective Twitter Status application page on Facebook.

Step 2:

Enter your twitter username.

Step 3:
Press Save.
Any tweets you post that end with #fb will now update your Facebook status.

Selective Twitter Status - Help Page:
The hashtag should be added to the end of your tweet.

One exception: it's ok if the #fb is followed by a space and then a link, e.g. "This is my tweet #fb http://linky.com/linky". This ensures it will still work with apps that automatically add links e.g. TwitPic

There must be a space before the hashtag.

Legacy Place: Everything is here to be bought

Robert Campbell writes in today's Boston Globe:
"My problem with Legacy Place isn’t the forgettable architecture. It’s that everything is here to be bought. On the old Main Street, the one that is supposedly being copied here, much of the action was about maintaining things, not merely buying them. There was maybe a shoe repair, a watchmaker, a tailor or dressmaker, a hardware store, a pharmacy, a dentist, a church, a clinic, a funeral parlor, a post office. Nothing like those exists at Legacy Place."

NECN Report: Elder bloggers dispel myths about who's online

Ally Donnelly from NECN produced this great report: Elder bloggers dispel myths about who's online
(NECN: Ally Donnelly) - BRB, LOL, TTYL. Many of us consider this the language of the young.

But more and more senior citizens are becoming just as tech savvy as the so-called kids these days.

In tonight's cover story, Ally Donnelly introduces us to elder blogger and Facebooking grandma who are dispelling myths about who's online, in an online community.

Millie Garfield's microwave is on the fritz --- and while many sons might grab their tool belt, Steve Garfield grabs his camera.

84-year-old Garfield is a blogger --- the Swampscott, Massachusetts woman weaving her way onto the world wide web about 6 years ago, after she read about blogging in the newspaper.

Garfield: I had never heard of it. Sounded interesting and I said, gee, sounds good.

Garfield didn't even have a computer, but with the help of her son she started her own blog.

It's called "My Mom's Blog - by thoroughly modern Millie." It started with just a few tentative posts.
Continue reading the full text of the report.

Here's the video we made about Larry David not being able to open packages, A Special Message to Larry David from Millie Garfield:

I'm in the report too. Here's my quote about elder bloggers:
"I asked Millie Garfield's son what it's like to have his 84-year-old mother on the Internet, and he scolds me --- saying I shouldn't ask the question with such wide eyed wonder.

Steve Garfield: Don’t keep the stereotype going because that's all it is -- a false stereotype. There are plenty of older people who are very experienced...running countries and all kinds of things so there's really no reason older or elder people shouldn't use technology because they are."
Thanks Ally. Great report.

How do you move iPhone Voice Memos to your Mac?

iPhone Explorer works, and it's free.

iPhone Explorer

Update:
iTunes synced the files for me, I just didn't see the Voice Memos folder in iTunes.

Then I started to think that I couldn't use the Finder to see the files on my iPhone, so I ended up with iPhone Explorer.

Gary Vaynerchuk filming Wine Library TV at Gillette Stadium with a Flip cam.

Gary Vaynerchuck shows how it's done at Gillette Stadium by fliming an episode of Wine Library TV with a Flip cam.

Awesome!

Watch the video. At the same time that everthing is wrong with this video, everything is right.

Gary has one of the most popular video shows on the internet, and for this one, he's done everything wrong.

He's filming it with a hand held flip cam, he's backlit with the sun pointing towards the camera, he has no additional lighting, there's some kind of air conditioner noise happening in the background, and the audio isn't the best quality. He isn't caught up in all the technical requirements of light kits, lav mics, extra batteries, power cords, tripods, steady shots, multiple shots, or anything remotely requiring knowledge of video production.

He's also done everything is right.

He's accomplishing his goal of filming his show at Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots, he's passionate about what he is doing, and he's sharing his love and knowledge of wine.

It works.

Make Gary's example work for you by getting involved in online video and staring a show about something you are passionate about.

Then, if you're interested inimporving your production values, you can always learn about it in a book I happen to have written. ;-)

Hope vs. Fear

Official portrait of President-elect Barack Obama

Announcement: The Nobel Peace Prize for 2009:
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama's vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.

Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international institutions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama's initiative, the USA is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.

Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population.
REMARKS BY THE PRESIDENT ON WINNING THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE:
THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Well, this is not how I expected to wake up this morning. After I received the news, Malia walked in and said, "Daddy, you won the Nobel Peace Prize, and it is Bo's birthday!" And then Sasha added, "Plus, we have a three-day weekend coming up." So it's good to have kids to keep things in perspective.

I am both surprised and deeply humbled by the decision of the Nobel Committee. Let me be clear: I do not view it as a recognition of my own accomplishments, but rather as an affirmation of American leadership on behalf of aspirations held by people in all nations.
(CNN) – Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele is slamming the Nobel Committee's decision to award Presdient Obama the Nobel Peace Prize:
“The real question Americans are asking is, ‘What has President Obama actually accomplished?’ It is unfortunate that the president’s star power has outshined tireless advocates who have made real achievements working towards peace and human rights. One thing is certain – President Obama won’t be receiving any awards from Americans for job creation, fiscal responsibility, or backing up rhetoric with concrete action.”
RNC Chairman Michael Steele is disrepectful, divisive, petty, hateful, immature, + partisan.

A Revolution In Video

IMS09 - Video Experiment

[Video] One Step to Putting Video Online by Clicking a Red Button
Recorded with Kodak Zi8, Uploaded to MobileMe via QuickTime.

Nate Riggs Video from IMS09.

Nate Riggs has a great summary on his blog, Steve Garfield Video Experiment at Inbound Marketing Summit:
I’ve never seen anything like this, but it was a really cool experience. Instantly, the social web was flooded with documented experiences from an army of social web publishers, and as I type this post, there are hundreds of uploads and blogs being published at the same time. That Internet presence will be indexed by Google, and will live in the web indefinitely.

Thanks Steve. You kick ass!
Amy Mengel writes about the Video Experiment:
Garfield is a pioneer in video podcasting and spoke to the IMS crowd about mobile video broadcasting, citizen journalism and Jimmy Fallon (they’re buds, sorta). Garfield invited anyone at IMS who was capable of shooting video to come to the front of the room with their device and record. I used my point-and-shoot camera, a Canon PowerShot SD1100.

It was very “meta”, very echo chamber and very absurd, but fun to do nonetheless.
Tyson Goodridge mentions my presentation in his post, Inbound Marketing Summit- Day 2 Recap:

[Video] Choosing a Video Camera

Steve Garfield talks about choosing a camera for producing online video. Cameras reviewed include the Creative Webcam, Panasonic FX 37, Flip, iPhone 3GS and Kodak Zi8. Microphone reviewed was the Brando flexible mini capsule Microphone.

Disclosure:
Creative, Flip, Kodak, Nokia and XShot loaned me their products to review. Panasonic gave me the FX 37. I bought the iPhone 3GS as an upgrade the an iPhone that I won in a contest sponsored by the now defunct Boston NOW newspaper. I purchased the Brando Microphone and the Audio Technica ATR 3550 lav mic.

I bought a Skim Decaf Latte at JP Licks this morning. I had a scone for breakfast that was a gift from Aer Lingus.

Is it any wonder we said Oui?

Galway

Brendan O’Connor, wrote in The Sunday Independent:
"Is it any wonder we said Oui? What were we going to say to Europe? We have full confidence in the people who are governing us. We'll stick with them thanks? No, instead it was more of a plea. Will someone come and take us over please? Anyone? We don't care if you're European and we don't trust you. You'll do."
I saw a mention of this article from the Sunday Indepenent on the NY Times website, via twitter, but the NY Times didn't link to it.

So I'm linking to it here.

I spent an hour reading the front section of the Sunday Independent yesterday. Lots of interesting news from Ireland.

Dublin City Hall

We were in Dublin on the day of the vote and walked by City Hall late in the day. I saw a cameraman and asked him what hte result was, he told me it was lookign postitive, then the fellow with the camera man told me that yes was going to win the vote.

Later that night on the news I saw the same guy on TV, he was the reporter.
