Great stuff in here including:

New Entrants by Brad Cohen:
As corporate blogs become more, well, “corporate,” forward-looking brands are beginning to use hosted services like Posterous and Tumblr to establish “lightweight” blogs. These properties help companies get messages and digital assets to market faster than they could on a more rigorously managed corporate blog or Website. They are also valuable tools for organizations that support the “personal brands” of select executives and spokespeople. Think of them as occupying the space between full-featured blogging platforms and Twitter.
These lightweight blogs are a great place for casual corporate videos.

Share authentic moments without having to worry about adding titles, credits and music.

You set the site visitor's expectations by placing these video moments on a lightweight blog instead of the main corporate site. Chevrolet does a great job with this on Chevy's posterous blog.

The Google+ project: Hangouts

THIS is very cool.

We used to have scheduled Videoblogging Group video chats back in the day. Watch me talk about those early video chats in my talk: Introduction to Videoblogging at Podcast Academy - May 2006.

People could just pop in and video chat.

The thing that I like about The Google+ project: Hangouts is that it's not planned, without a schedule, rundown, or agenda.

There are times for planning, like SteveGarfield.tv, tune in Thursdays at 2 ET :-), but I like the idea of this free form open chat room.

Update 6/30:

Tried it.

Google Hangout Video Chat

It works, and you can watch YouTube videos together.

Facebook is forcing me to make a decision for my Boston Media Makers Group that has 496 members. Here's what they say:
This group is scheduled to be archived.

Over the next few months, Facebook will be archiving all groups created using the old groups format. When this group is archived, its wall posts, photos and discussion threads will move to the new groups format, but group members will need to be re-added.
This isn't fair.

Facebook explains it this way: How do I upgrade an old group to a new group?
If your old group has enough recent activity to make it a good candidate for a new group, you will see a message at the top of the group with the option to upgrade.
My group doesn't have enough activity since I've just been using at as a place for meeting announcements.

The 496 members like it. But since the group is being archived and record of all existing members will be lost, I'm creating a new Boston Media Makers page.

Please LIKE the new Boston Media Makers Facebook Page.

Thanks!

LEVOLOR Accordia Cellular Shades Instructions PWDR0142

The instructions for the LEVOLOR Accordia Cellular Shades Instructions PWDR0142 are confusing. They've got outside and inside mount instructions on the same page, and they aren't separated clearly. So if you are reading along, and don't catch the fact that you need to skip the instructions that you don't need, you end up following the wrong instructions. Would be nice if it was organized better.

Charity Gauntlet at JP Licks Jamaica Plain - Obstructing the Sidewalk

Charity Gauntlet - Obstructing the Sidewalk by stevegarfield
Charity Gauntlet - Obstructing the Sidewalk, a photo by stevegarfield on Flickr via Google Maps Street View.

I just happened to be looking at JP Licks on Google Maps Street View and saw these solicitors forming a charity gauntlet in front of JP Licks.

Take Photos!
Let's document the Charity Gauntlet.

Take photos and post them to your favorite photo sharing site. Then post a link on Universal Hub's 'The charity gauntlet in Jamaica Plain' message thread.

Running the Charity Gauntlet in front of JP Licks

This man in front of the Jamaica Plain Post Office has just run the charity gauntlet in front of JP Licks. Wikipedia defines Running the Gauntlet this way:

Running the gauntlet (originally gantlet, and, rarely, gantlope or gantelope) is a form of physical punishment wherein a captive is compelled to run between two rows—a gauntlet—of soldiers who strike him as he passes.
Yesterday it was Planned Parenthood.

Charity Asking for Money on the Street
It seems like every time I walk by JP Licks, one charity or another is asking me for money. The solicitors work in pairs, and stand in such a way, to make sure they can approach every person.

I Give Online
My own policy for charity is that I select charities that I know and give to them online. I never give to people who come to the house, call on the phone, or ask for money on the street.

Well, there was this one time that I supported the local school and bought the $10 seeds in front of JP Licks. Those are coming up great.

The Charity Gauntlet Isn't Right
But back to the charity gauntlet.

It's not right.

I don't think we should have to walk through this gauntlet of charity solicitors every time I want to walk down the street in JP.

How do you feel about it?

Is it legal?

Do they need a license from the State Attorney's Office?

[Video] Techstars Boston Demo Day 6/15/2011

Techstars Boston

For this video I used a new app that I learned about last night on AmgelList. This video was made with videolicious and uploaded from my iPhone.

Videolicious has five steps: Shoot Clips, Assemble Clips, Record Narration, Add Music, and Save/Upload.

The cool thing is that for the Assemble step, you don't do any editing. The iPhone edits all your clips and photos together.

To make this video I followed these steps.

1. Shoot Clips
I shot B-Roll of the venue, the sign in area, nametags, t-shirts, signage, the room and people.

2. Assemble Clips
Then I ran videolicious and told it which clips I wanted in my video.

3. Record Narration
Next, I recorded a video, giving an overview of the Techstars conference. To shoot this I used an XShot camera extender [Evaluation Unit] and Xshot iPhone 4 case [Evaluation Unit] to hold the camera farther away from me than I could with my arm. For sound I used an iRig Mic [Evaluation Unit] to get better audio.

It would be good it you could record your narration prior to starting up the app. You might have a preferred video app that you might want to use. There are some new ones with nice features.

4. Add Music
There are some supplied music clips you can use, or you can use music from your iTunes library if you have the rights.

5. Save/Upload
I saved the video to my camera roll, then chose to send it to YouTube. You've got to use the YouTube direct mobile uploads email adress to set this up. Access the Upload From Mobile email address on the set up page, you can get there from your YouTube Upload page.

I had a good first experience with videolicious. I look forward to trying it on some more videos.
