H.265? Sounds better.



ITU approves new H.265 video format:
A new video coding standard building on the PrimeTime Emmy award winning ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 AVC was agreed by ITU members today.
The new codec will considerably ease the burden on global networks where, by some estimates, video accounts for more than half of bandwidth use. The new standard, known informally as ‘High Efficiency Video Coding’ (HEVC) will need only half the bit rate of its predecessor, ITU-T H.264 / MPEG-4 Part 10 ‘Advanced Video Coding’ (AVC), which currently accounts for over 80 per cent of all web video. HEVC will unleash a new phase of innovation in video production spanning the whole ICT spectrum, from mobile devices through to Ultra-High Definition TV.
ITU-T’s Study Group 16 has agreed first-stage approval (consent) of the much-anticipated standard known formally as Recommendation ITU-T H.265 or ISO/IEC 23008-2. It is the product of collaboration between the ITU Video Coding Experts Group (VCEG) and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
I have no idea what this means.

H.264 is pretty much the de facto codec for video compression online these days. WebM isn't even supported in Android, nor just about anywhere else. Mercedes Benz Fashion Film Featuring the CLA



As He Likes It:
In the latest Ryan McGinley film, the new Mercedes-Benz CLA is showcased in all its headstrong splendour alongside top model Karlie Kloss in Chloé and under the creative direction of Jefferson Hack.

When you see a driver and a car you expect clearly assigned roles: the driver is in control of the vehicle and the vehicle does what it is told. For the film of the Mercedes-Benz key visual Autumn/Winter 2013 Ryan McGinley turns this logic upside down. Rather than showing the new CLA as a perfect design object and a perfectly agile car, he allows the four-door style rebel to have a mind of its own.

McGinley is a perfect match for this free-spirited and unconventional production. Nature and natural beauty are integral parts of his work. His set is a deserted landscape in California and the CLA shares the screen with an unusual protagonist: a mysterious white horse. As the female lead he chooses top model Karlie Kloss who is known for her classic beauty and more so for her exceptional expression. The 21 year-old has been working with clients like Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Marc Jacobs for the past seven years. She doesn´t just wear her pretty Chloé outfit in all white – she actually brings it to life.

For the past twenty years Jefferson Hack has made his mark on the Zeitgeist, having worked on magazines such as Dazed&Confused and AnOther Magazine.

As the Creative Director of the Mercedes-Benz fashion film, he and McGinley have produced an imagery that shows the CLA and Karlie Kloss as a team rather than car and driver. Together they cruise through the golden steppe, the sky above them clear and open, until Katie Kloss spots the horse by the side of the road, slows down and stops the car. As she gets out and approaches the horse, the CLA takes off by itself. What ensues is a cat-and-mouse game that McGinley describes as "punk". Just as Karlie is about to give up and, defeated, sits down on the curb, the car returns to her and opens its passenger door invitingly. In the final scene of the film they can be seen driving off together as the CLA takes control of the steering wheel and Karlie Kloss relaxes and lets the wind sweep through her hair.

The Mercedes-Benz fashion film Autumn/Winter 2013 is both poetic and unconventional. Ryan McGinley and Jefferson Hack bring the CLA to life with a mind of its own while staying true to its ethos: The CLA is provocative and nonconformist.

My Father Was A Magician

I originally posted a video on November 22, 2004, as part of my early testing of my RSS 2.0 feed with a video enclosure.

Here's the description:
My father was a magician.

I found a bag of his tricks today and that brought back memories of the shows he performed. He started out doing a magic show for one of my birthday parties, then he did shows for friends, and ended up doing shows at local hospitals. Some of the tricks I found are pretty old.

I also found some index cards that listed which trick would go into which of his pockets.

He was organized, as am I.
Recently, one of the little kids from one of the parties contacted the family to say that they had a video from the party of my dad doing a magic trick.



We never had a video camera when I was little, so this is the only video I have of my dad, and he's doing a magic trick.

This is so cool. Since it's a silent movie, I couldn't resist adding some sound. Video purists can mute the audio,. ;-)

Anheuser-Busch to unveil new beer at Super Bowl:
For the second consecutive year, Anheuser-Busch InBev will serve up a new brew to Super Bowl viewers.

The beer giant will tout its just-out Budweiser Black Crown brand during the Feb. 3 Super Bowl XLVII. The new beer is scheduled to be on sale nationwide by Jan. 21...

Black Crown's recipe was picked from among six limited-edition beers that were created by Budweiser brewmasters earlier this year. Based on positive consumer feedback, A-B decided to take this formula national.

The new beer, a golden amber lager, is "a little bit darker and a little bit more flavorful" than the traditional Budweiser lager, says McCarthy.
This beer was part of the Project 12 competition, where brewmasters at Budweiser's 12 US breweries created new unique beers.

I sampled the top three in a Project 12 Sampler Pack.



All the beers were very good, and had zip codes on the label to signify where the beer was developed.



My favorite was 23185. A light Amber aged on bourbon barrel staves and real vanilla beans.

The winner though was 91406, made from four different types of hops. It would have been my #2 choice.

I still have a few left, so now I'm going to try 91406 again to see if I want to buy more as Budweiser Black Crown.

This was a great idea from Budweiser.

After you get the app, when you open it, you see the top editor's pick video.

Right now it's a staring contest.



This will get old, fast.

Embed code needs an option to turn off auto play, although at 6 seconds long, with the default of muted audio, it's not that bad.

The ability to easily record multiple clips, one after another, is smart and is going to lead to a lot of creative videos being produced.

Seems like this feature has been removed temporarily to fix it.

How To Add Lower Thirds (Your Name on Screen) to a Google+ Video Hangout

Back in the early days of Google+ Video Hangouts, 2012, there was no way within G+ to add people's names to the bottom of the screen. In fact, back then, you couldn't live stream a G+ video hangout either. In fact, you had to walk up a hill, both ways, in the snow to get to school.

Now, the ability to add your name to a G+ Hangout is available in the Google+ Toolbox App.

Note:
The older Hangout Lower Third standalone app is being replaced by this Google+ Toolbox App.

The Google+ Toolbox App is one of many apps you can now add to a Google+ Hangout, when you are in a hangout. Here's how:
If you want to use the Hangout Toolbox, just click on the + button in the new app sidebar, followed by a click on Hangout Toolbox! That's it. easy, simple, right where you need it.
Once you install and run the app, it looks like this:

Once installed you have these features for Lower Thirds (The First Button on the Top Left of the Hangout Toolbox Menu):
Lower Thirds:
Line one - Line one of text
Line two - Line two of text
Bar Color - Color of lower thirds

Select Country - If you want a flag instead of a custom Logo

Display Clock:

Custom Overlay:
"If you want to build a complete custom overlay, create a transparent PNG with the size 640x360 pixel. You can then load it with the second file selector as a custom overlay."

Mirror:
Instead of looking at the display as a mirror, switch to looking at it as others will see the screen. I much prefer it this way.

Presets:
Save all your settings for later use.
That's it for the Lower Thirds feature of the Google+ Hangout Toolbox.

There are other features in here too, like sound effects, but those aren't important now.

Amazon Instant Video on Wii

Amazon Instant Video on Wii is great. (Affiliate Link)

Way better than Amazon Instant Video via my Panasonic TV.

One thing that's really helpful is that after you link up to your Amazon account, your Wishlist is displayed.

It's My Amazon Watchlist on my Wii. Very cool.

My Amazon Watchlist on my Wii is just like a Netflix queue.

The other thing that's great with the Wii, are the easy to use video controls.

Much easier than trying to find the right buttons to push on the Panasonic tv remote.

Jonathan Coulton vs. Glee: It's About the Ethics By Michele Catalano:
Coulton may not have any legal recourse here, but there is an ethical question at issue that the FOX must answer. Is it right to use an artists’s work and then say he should be glad for the exposure?

...Coulton’s “Baby Got Back” is not his own song, but his own interpretation of the song with music he created. For FOX to not care that they are taking someone else’s work and calling it their own or, worse, to acknowledge it is someone else’s work but dismiss his right to be credited, is unethical and underhanded.

Glee makes its living off of covers. If it weren’t for the work of other artists, the show wouldn’t even exist. That they are stealing – yes, stealing – works from other artists does not speak well for the creative team of the show nor of the ethical or moral concerns of FOX and everyone involved with choice to air the song uncredited.

FOX needs to do the right thing and at least retroactively give Coulton credit for his arrangement.

I’ve released this track as a single – it should be on iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play eventually if it’s not already. It’s a cover of Glee’s cover of my cover of Sir Mix-a-Lot’s song, which is to say it’s EXACTLY THE SAME as my original version. I’m releasing this under the same Harry Fox license I used for the 2005 release, so Mix will get all the royalties due to him. I’ll donate the proceeds from all sales that happen between now and the end of February to two charities: The VH1 Save the Music Foundation, and The It Gets Better Project.



Can you copy a cover of an original song and use it commercially without compensating the intermediate artist?

'Glee' uses Jonathan Coulton's cover of 'Baby Got Back' without permission
And unfortunately there's not much he can do about it
...while musicians are allowed to make stylistic changes to songs as they cover them, their reworkings of the original song aren't protected by copyright unless they get permission from the original songwriter — the song itself still belongs to the songwriter...

Final result? The licensing fees Coulton pays in order to sell "Baby Got Back" just clear him to sell the song, but don't create a new copyright in his arrangement. His work arranging the song effectively has no copyright at all — which means Glee's producers could take it at will.

The TV show Glee airing an episode called "Sadie Hawkins", which features a cover of "Baby Got Back". The song bares a strong similiarity to this version.

Who Owns The Arrangement?:
Sarah’s been in the New York University Women’s College Bobbletones since her freshman year. She arranged every single one of the songs for the All-Michael-Jackson A cappella Tribute Album...

Arrangements are what the Copyright Act calls derivative works. Making derivative works is a right exclusively granted to the songwriter under copyright law. The arranger can claim a copyright only when the songwriter has granted that privilege to the arranger. But that’s not the case with Sarah. Like most a cappella arrangers, she heard the songs, liked the songs and put her heart and soul into arranging the songs. That's not enough to give Sarah ownership.

While it is legal for Sarah to arrange songs for a recording when the group pays the proper royalties for the songs, neither Sarah nor the Bobbletones actually own the arrangements of those songs.

After airing its rip-off of Jonathan Coulton’s version of “Baby Got Back” last night, Glee has finally responded to the singer-songwriter. In a very non-Gleek-friendly response, reps for the show apparently told Coulton “they’re within their legal rights to do this”—which is true—and that the singer should just be happy with the exposure. Though, as Coulton points out, they don’t credit him anywhere in the show or on the song, so it’s “secret exposure.”

Coulton said that while his lawyers have been looking into the copyright issue, it seems unlikely that he will have any legal recourse. ”It seems that because of the compulsory license I purchased when I made a cover of this song, the arrangement itself is not protected under copyright, although it’s the darkest gray of the gray areas [of the law]… While there may be some weird offshoot of the law, it doesn’t seem like something where a little guy could sue to get any satisfaction.”

How to Add a Clickable Link to a YouTube Video

I was recently asked how to add a clickable link to a YouTube video.

For the longest time, all you were allowed to do on YouTube was to link to another video.

But, now you can link off site!

In the YouTube help section it's called: Associated Website Annotations.

This feature is only available to verified partners who are in good standing.

You can check your status on the YouTube Settings/Features page.

First you have to assign an Associated Website to your account. That's the external site that you will be linking to.

Then, you can add an annotation to your video that links to that external site.

From Video Manager/Edit you first have to "“Enable your account for external annotation links.”



Then agree to the Terms & Conditions.



Then Add an Annotation, like a Label, Click the Link checkbox, and choose Associated Website.

Type in your URL and then Click PUBLISH to make it live.



Here's the result.



At the end of the video [1:37.4], my URL SteveGarfield.com is now clickable.

He also explains how you can send people to places other than you main URL, like an about me page http://stevegarfield.com/Site/About_Me.html, plus James also has found out that redirects work too. ;-)

I've got to give a shout out to Pep Boys for great customer service today.

Yesterday I went in to get new wipers for my car. The clerk looked up the correct blades to fit my car and I bought them. Everything seemed ok, until today when I turned them on during the rain.

Clang, clang, clang. The driver's side wiper was getting caught up on the passenger side wiper. This wasn't a good fit. I'd chosen the brand after seeing a YouTube video about how easy it was to install.

I was not looking forward to going back to exchange these, even though it seems that I was incorrectly told which ones to buy in the first place.

Well, there was no problem. In fact the new blades cost less, and the clerk opened the package and told me to go out and see if it fit to make sure. They even offered to have the service people install the wiper for me.

I went out and popped the new blade in. It fit.

I went back inside and thanked them and then installed the other blade. These fit a lot better.

I was really happy with the friendly service at Pep Boys. I'll be back.
