My #SXSW 2013 Schedule - Say Hi!

IFC Crossroads House at SXSW

I'm starting to see people sharing their plans for SXSW. I've gotten a deluge of party invites, and RSVP'd to a lot of them, not all of them, but ones that I really want to go to.

This year there are some services that, for a fee, will register you for everything. That's not fair to the event organizers.

One thing that happens at SXSW is that you'll see someone, and think that you'll be able to catch them later. Sometimes, you'll never see them again.

Then, after the conference there will be the email saying, I saw you, but you looked busy, so I didn't say hi, but I really wanted to meet you.

Don't do that.

IF YOU SEE ME SAY HI.

It's cool.

SXSW People 2009

Last year a did a daily live show leading up to SXSW called The Road to SXSW. Here's the first episode with Travel Tips for #SXSW from 2012. It's useful for 2013 too.

My #SXSW 2103 Schedule ( Subject to Change )

When I schedule for SXSW, I make sure I schedule in things that I must attend. So no matter what else is going on, I make it a point to get to some sessions and events that for me are ones I don't want to miss.

I'll be filling in this schedule as it gets closer to SXSW. Here's what I have so far.

Leave a comment if there's something you think I'll like.

UPDATE: MY #SXSW Schedule
I've used the SXSW web site and iPhone app to add a bunch of sessions to my schedule. It doesn't mean that I'll get to them, but click over to MY SXSW for sessions that I think are interesting.

CC Chapman: Making the Most of SXSW:
In the past you’ve read how I rarely go to any of the parties. They are big, loud and insane. The lines will be long and you should be prepared to wait quite some time for the bigger ones. Every year you’ll hear people complaining about the lines. Accept them or don’t attend.

The shear volume of attendees is overwhelming and it is easy to get lost in the waves of people. You need to plan ahead to make the most of your time in Austin.

Margot Bloomstein: It’s a small SXSW after all:
Intimate conversations.
Thoughtful, small group dialogue.
Casual, unhurried engagement over drinks with potential partners and clients.
That’s an ideal industry conference, right? Well, that’s still what I find at South by Southwest Interactive. Even among 20,000 hustlers, gurus, and thinkers of The Next Big Thought, I still look forward to a SXSW that gives me opportunities to reconnect and engage.

I saw my friend Gregory NG on Fox 25 Boston in their report on IKEA Meatballs.

They showed a quick excerpt of his Freezer Burns video review.

Would be nice if they had given him an on screen credit or link on the website so people could go see his whole video.

Canary Square Restaurant in Boston uses Twitter to Share

Canary Square on Twitter (@CanarySquareJP):

Only people who follow @gearybrewing will see this next one:

If they had changed it to say ".@gearybrewing" or "Hey! @gearybrewing" then ALL their followers would see it.

Follow These People to Learn How to Listen and Tell Stories with Social Media

Here are some of my good friends that share knowledge on how best to use Social Media.

Follow them and watch what they do. Their sites are also great examples of how to make a page that tells a story and asks you to do something.

Using Facebook Posts to Promote Limited Inventory

Gary's Liquors uses Facebook to promote limited products.

Here a limited selection of whisky is promoted in a post.

I knew two people who would be interested, so I named them in a comment. That let's them see the post on their newsfeed.

Social Media For Business: Find Us and Follow Us Examples

Brand Resource Center: Facebook "f" logoTwitter Logo: twitter-bird-white-on-blue

Like us on Facebook - Follow us on Twitter

This is one of my pet peeves. Putting the Facebook and Twitter logo on your advertising is a good ad for Facebook and Twitter, but not for you.

Call Us!

Would you put a picture of a telephone in your ad without a phone #?

This is an example of how not to do it:
"Search for Gary's Liquors on Facebook." Why not just go to Facebook.com/garysliquors directly?

This is better. Give people a direct URL address to find:
Way to go Gary's. Social Media Outposts done right! @garysliquors

CHOOSE A CONSISTENT NAME
When you choose a name to use on social media, try to make it something that will easily come to mind. In the above example, Gary's Liquors used 'garysliquors'.

Makes sense.

When people go to twitter to find you, they are going to use your company name first. See if you can grab that. ;-)

ADVERTISING GUIDELINES
When you use Facebook and Twitter logos in your advertising, make sure you adhere to their guidelines.

Facebook Brand Permissions Center:

Facebook Guidelines

We permit the use of the “f” logo to refer, off of Facebook, to the following:

- Your Facebook Page
- Your Facebook Group
- An application you offer via Facebook Platform
- Your implementation of Facebook Connect

Twitter Trademark and Content Display Policy

Twitter Usage guidelines

Do:

Use our official, unmodified Twitter bird to represent our brand.
Make sure the bird faces right.
Allow for at least 150% buffer space around the bird.

Use one of the Twitter buttons as a link to your account online.
Use one of the Twitter bird logos with your @username nearby in print.
Write out Follow us on Twitter with your @username nearby when you’re unable to show the Twitter bird.

Don't:

Use speech bubbles or words around the bird.
Rotate or change the direction of the bird.
Animate the bird.
Duplicate the bird.
Change the color of the bird.
Use any other marks or logos to represent our brand.
Gary's bird is going to be updated in his next ad.

What Louis CK learned from George Carlin

What Louis CK learned from George Carlin :
Louis CK speaks about George Carlin and the momentous inspiration the late comedic icon had on his career. Taken from a tribute to George Carlin at the New York Public Library hosted by Whoopi Goldberg in March 2010, Louis CK becomes emotional describing the specific events and methods of building new material that gave his comedy new direction and fueled his success. Loved my Visit to the Carnegie Deli in New York City

I loved my visit to the Carnegie Deli in New York City.

Carnegie Deli!

You've got to be smart abuot ordering though. The Woody Allen, a corned beef and pastrami sandwich sounds interesting, but you get a CORNED BEEF SANDWICH ON TOP OF A PASTRAMI SANDWICH!

My wife, Carol, and I split a HOT PASTRAMI sandwich.

Pastrami! Lots of it.

THE BEST!

Clean plate!

Update 2/25/13:

When I was in the Carnegie Deli, I was intrigued by all the photos on the wall. On my way out I asked how I could get my photo on the wall. They told me to send in a photo and that depending on location it costs either two-fifty, three-fifty, or four-fifty.

I replied that I'd just enclose $4 cash in the envelope.

They all laughed.

Looking forward to seeing what happens, and then sending in 30K twitter followers to take a picture in there, with my photo on the wall. ;-)

And yes, I picked an old headshot photo for fun!

Update: 5/14/13:

This just in... My photo is up!

Please head over to the Carnegie Deli in NYC and grab a photo of my headshot up on the wall.

It's in the hallway between the dining rooms. I'm next to Father Guido Sarducci.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon | Fri, Feb 22, 2013

I visited Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Thursday February 21st. I was able to go to both the monologue run through, and the taping of the whole show.

I had a great time. I've got two videos below, the whole show, and a clip of the final credits where Jimmy runs into the audience and finds me. Fun!

Watch the whole episode:

Closing credits: @jimmyfallon runs into the audience and finds me @stevegarfield ;-)

I also got to attend the monologue rehearsal. When Jimmy was testing out the jokes, he saw me and said, "Oh look, it's Steve Garfield." Then he came into the audience and we chatted. Then the audience left the studio, and when we filled into the studio again, I was given the same seat. So when the show ended, and Jimmy ran into the audience, he said, "Same Seat!" Fun times.

The State of Video – Win the War for Attention with Video by Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff

Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff has a guest post over at Jane Quigley's Social Days blog, The State of Video – Win the War for Attention with Video by Mark Yoshimoto Nemcoff:
Smart brands realize they don’t just have customers anymore, they also have audiences. What you say is still as important as how you say it. However, in our ever-expanding universe of social engagement, you can’t just rely on all the same old channels and still expect exponential results.
The value of "social video" for business

It's a good read, and I'm happy that he liked my video and included it in the post, with it's fun thumbnail image!

I also love this quote:
Social video pioneer Steve Garfield has been making videos on the Internet back since Mark Zuckerberg was still living in a Harvard dorm room.

[Video] Chris and Diana Pirillo are Videoblogging Old School

Chris and Diana Pirillo share their day in this 10 minute video.

I was prompted to take a look because Chris asked this? "Wanna see where @VloggerFair will be this summer?"

VloggerFair?

This video reminds me of how we used to do videos back when there weren't web series, awards, or even video hosting services.

This is the kit that Chris uses to film, Sony Cyber-shot DSC-WX50 Complete Real Estate Video Kit. I really like the wide angle.

I'm waiting to get a new camera with a wide angle lens like this and think I'd be fun to make some videos like this. No real editing is needed other than an assemble edit to put all the clips together, one after another.
