A Great Way to Spend a Sunday!

I'm being interviewed for a newspaper article about my favorite way to spend a Sunday. Here are the notes that I thought of to get ready.



Get some excersise - Walk Jamaica Pond:
I walk the 1 1/2 miles around Jamaica Pond almost every day. It's a great way to get excersise. If you enjoy people and pet watching, this is a great place for taking a walk. As the season progresses you can watch the baby ducks and get grow. I also like to take a moment to shoot some photos while on my walks.



Meet some friends - Boston Media Makers Brunch at Doyle's [ First Sunday of Every Month ]:
I've run the Boston Media Makers since January of 2006. It's a casual event organized to allow everyone in attendance to be able to meet every other person. It started out as video centric, but has grown to include artists, realtors, photographers, movie makers, radioa and tv producers, teachers and more. Anyone who is interested in taking the pulse of how media makers are taking advantage of the web and social media should come by to join us.



Relax - Reading the Sunday Newspaper:
I enjoy reading the paper each morning, Sunday's included. We subscribe the the Boston Globe and Wall Street Jourrnal. When I make time for it, I also enjoy grabbing a copy of the Sunday New York Times.



Wander - Heading into Boston on the Orange Line to be a tourist and ending up at a bar for a drink:
Boston has a lot to offer and any weekend you can find something to do in town. Many times I'll log on to Yelp! to see where there might be a good place to check out while walking around the city. Here's my Yelp! page with reviews.



Dinner - Supporting a locally owned restaurant:
Dinner at VeeVee in JP at the bar talking with Dan, the owner, sampling beer from his unique selection, and enjoying on of his chef's creative meals.

Douglas Rushkoff gave a great talk at the Bosotn Public Library last night.

He talked about topics from his new book, Life Inc.

It was so interesting to hear his views on history.

Here's an excerpt from the introduction:

The financial meltdown may not be punishment for our sins, but it is at least in part the result of our widespread obsession with financial value over values of any other sort. We disconnected ourselves from what matters to us, and grew dependent on a business scheme that was never intended to serve us as people. But by adopting the ethos of this speculative, abstract economic model as our own, we have disabled the mechanisms through which we might address and correct the collapse of the real economy operating alongside it.

Even now, as we attempt to dig ourselves out of a financial mess caused in large part by this very mentality and behavior, we turn to the corporate sphere, its central banks, and shortsighted metrics to gauge our progress back to health. It’s as if we believe we’ll find the answer in the stream of trades and futures on one of the cable- TV finance channels instead of out in the physical world. Our real investment in the fabric of our neighborhoods and our quality of life takes a backseat to asking prices for houses like our own in the newspaper’s misnamed “real estate” section. We look to the Dow Jones average as if it were the one true vital sign of our society’s health, and the exchange rate of our currency as a measure of our wealth as a nation or worth as a people.

This, in turn, only distracts us further from the real- world ideas and activities through which we might actually re-create some value ourselves.

Dave Winer is always inventing things. He just invented an easy way to start a discussion about a tweet. Dave explains Discussions in Twitter:

Chris Brown Sued for Assault and Battery:

On March 13, 2009, Rosen took a photo of Brown playing basketball at The Universal City gym and attempted to flee the premises when some of Brown’s bodyguards noticed him and yelled after him. An LA Fitness employee allegedly attempted to block Rosen’s exit and proceeded to grab his clothing and body. After falling down the stairs, Rosen claims one of the bodyguards picked him up by his shorts and physically assaulted him, causing further injuries.

Can your bodyguard pick someone up by the shorts if you take a photo of them?

BostonGlobe: Couple's problems sadly add to drama

The Gosselins did invite us to peek through the curtains when they agreed to be the subject of a docu-reality series. And for a long time, they capitalized. As Jon explained on the air, they turned their lives into a business, complete with lucrative book deals and speaking engagements for Kate, the more gregarious and limelight-loving of the pair. Of course, everything changed in the meantime, from their working arrangements to their family dynamics. How could the Gosselins have expected otherwise?

The key to finding a parking spot

Madeleine Blais shares advice from Ann Banks in her Boston Globe OP-ED piece, What to tell my journalism grads:

"'The key to finding a parking spot is to drive to exactly where you want to be and only then to start looking for a place to park. Your passengers will probably try to undermine your confidence in this plan by urging you to take the first place you come across - claiming that 'we aren't going to do better than that.' Ignore them. You need to demonstrate to the Parking Gods that you expect to be lucky. In parking, as in life, start by going after exactly what you want. Because you never know.'"

Death With Dignity in Massachusetts

Choosing when to die was "truly what she wanted to do," says friend | Seattle Times Newspaper:

"Rather than die in agony or spend her final days in a drug-induced haze, Fleming swallowed a fatal dose of barbiturates in her apartment Thursday night — becoming the first person in Washington to end her life under the state's new 'Death with Dignity' law."

We need a law like this in Massachusetts.
