Ann Marie from ABC pre interviewing my mom

Just got back in town in time to be there for the ABC News crew who were interviewing my mom for a report on retirement...

My mom rocked, as did the crew...

I ended up showing them how my posts to flickr and Qik end up on twitter...

Here a short video of me showing them Qik, live streaming from the cell phone...

Qik: Like, totally amazing and groundbreaking!

Steve Garfield

David Talbot interviewed me for this article in the MIT Technology Review, Cell-phone Streaming: Qik lets tourists--and reporters--broadcast live from phones:
Wandering the streets of Manchester, NH, during the presidential primary campaign, a self-described "citizen journalist" named Steve Garfield bumped into Duncan Hunter, a minor Republican candidate. Garfield pointed his phone's camera at Hunter for a quick interview, whereupon Hunter disclosed that he was about to tell CNN he wasn't quitting the race.

What Hunter didn't know is that Garfield's phone was armed with software from the startup Qik, allowing it to capture video and stream the interview--in real time--on Qik's website and thence to other platforms, including Garfield's Twitter network. Thus, Garfield says, he scooped CNN on this bit of election minutia...

The company is now working on business models. In one, it would sell ads to Web video consumers who text-message replies; in another, it would take a cut from sales of high-end cell phones that capture the best videos (which would come Qik-equipped). Garfield is happy to pay: "Viewers can type in a window while watching, and affect the coverage. That's, like, totally amazing and groundbreaking!"
That quote is accurate... Ha, ha! I'm valley speaking.

Recap of my NH Primary Coverage.

Is Social Media The Ultimate Buzz Kill?

Cell Phones Everywhere
Cell Phones Everywhere by Scott Ableman, on Flickr CC BY-NC-SA

Jonathan Fields writes, Is Social Media The Ultimate Buzz Kill?:
Millions of people now live-journal nearly every happening, thought and moment in their lives on Twitter, Plurk, Friendfeed, Socialthing and dozens of other services. So much so that I know a number of folks who literally rush to the computer of cell phone the seconds something remotely interesting begins to happen, out of an almost addictive need to report what’s going down.

Question is, is this activity turning us more into journalists of our own lives and less into participants?
Nick James comments:
I think you’ve hit Hunter S. Thompson’s definition of Gonzo bang on the nail there. True Gonzo was becoming the story, the actor, the director, the writer, and the producer - all of these things rolled into one and reporting it on the fly without editing.
I embrace blogging and micro-blogging for making this possible to every one of us. I’m sure Dr. Thompson would’ve embraced it too. Imagine if he’d been set loose in Vegas with a PDA and a Twitter/ Plurk account.
Very interesting comment...

I've got to go back and read Hunter S. Thompson...

McCain Doesn't Use a Computer or 'The Google'

Just saw this on Politico regarding McCain aide Mark Soohoo at Personal Democracy Forum, NYC, The Google:
"Soohoo is getting beat up a bit before what isn't exactly a McCain audience at the tech conference.

Pressed again on McCain's tech savvy, he defends his candidate.

'You don’t actually have to use a computer to understand how it shapes the country,' he says.

'You actually do,' former Edwards blogger Tracy Russo responds, suggesting he try to explain Twitter to his grandmother and then ask her how that applies to governing.

'John McCain is aware of the Internet,' says Soohoo. 'This is a man who has a very long history of understanding on a range of issues.'"
Happy the Mac is back

Gary Vaynerchuk is Great, but his Four Wines taste like Rubber Gloves

@garyvee Wine Bottles, originally uploaded by stevegarfield.

Gary Vaynerchuk was in Boston last night for a book signing. Lots of books were sold and signed.

I think Gary's great. I've gotten to know him as a fellow videoblogger. If you went to the event, you met Gary. He wants to meet everyone in the world. When I arrived, I saw him on the stairs and said hello. I initially thought it was a random encounter, but no. Gary was waiting to greet every single person as they arrived. That's cool.

Gary also taped an episode of his video blog web TV show, Wine Library TV. It was very much like a TV show taping with a live studio audience.

Gary Vaynerchuk - Boston 6/19/08

I was surprised that he still just sets up a camera on a tripod and has someone hit record. This time is was his assistant Matt who isn't a video producer... No lights, no microphones, nothing. Just a videocamera, wine and Gary.

He was extremely amusing... Gary is a very funny guy.

Last year I dropped him an email asking where to go in Napa and he sent me a list of his Top Three wineries to visit...

Carol and I made videos on the trip. Here's one, St Clement Vineyards:

Here's Part 1 - Elyse Winery and Part 2 - Whitehall Lane Winery.

After the Wine Library TV taping, as Gary signed his book, we went into the next room to sample the wine. The wines were set up on four tables, where each table had the same four wines. There were the wines that Gary had just talked about on the show.

All the wines were bad. Yes, they did taste like rubber gloves. The question was, "What wine didn't you hate?" It was a hard question to answer.

I don't know how the wines were chosen for this tasting, but in the future it would be nice if Gary could choose a selection of wines that he enjoys and wanted us to sample. A larger selection would be nice too... I understand the main purpose of this event was to sell books, but the wine tasting could have been better.

The after party was downstairs at the Foundation Lounge. There was talk of free food, I had one small veggie Sushi. I did see a plate go by with tons of appetizers on it and asked the waitress, "where are you off to in such a rush?" but it turned out that someone had ordered those appetizers... Good thing I didn't grab one of the plate as it sped by.

I did get to try some of Maria Thurrell's Dirty Martini. Very interesting. I do like olives...

The final score: Gary 10, Martini 7, Friends 10, Wine 0

It's all about people so I think it was a success!

Oh, yeah, we also got to meet James Fritland as he introduced an episode of the original Wine Library Theatre in this recently discovered film.

TypePad Adds Pagination for Archives

I just got an email from Christopher J. Alden, Chairman & CEO of Six Apart, Ltd. In it he talks about some new TypePad features. I run my video blog on TypePad.

Everything TypePad: New features and new themes:
"Yesterday we also introduced another highly requested feature: paginating your entry archives. If you're a frequent or long-time blogger on TypePad, you know that your monthly or category archives will just grow and grow and grow as you continue to post on your favorite topics. This can create challenges for your readers, who have to load a very large page in order to read your great posts on Cooking or Software or Television.

TypePad will now automatically 'paginate' your date archives and your category archives, and give your readers the familiar 'previous' 'next' links to navigate through your archives. This feature will make your archives easier to read and faster to download. And like we did with comment pagination, we're introducing a new set of preferences for your blog where you can define how many entries to show in a set (between 1 and 50), as well as the labels you want to use for the 'next' and 'previous' links. Don't like 'next' and 'previous'? Then change the labels to 'Keep going' and 'Go back.' Or 'Mooooore' and 'Lesssss.' Or anything you like. Learn more about configuring your blog publishing preferences in this Knowledge Base article."
Looking at the blog post I see that this feature was actually released on October 19, 2007.

Whoa.

I opened a help ticket requesting this feature on On May 10, 2005 and a similar request on Dec 29, 2005 9:23:49 AM.

Thirty months to add the feature, and then nine more months to tell me about it, indirectly.

Whatever.

My Top 40 Brands

Gazinia Cube

I just read Chris Brogan's What's your take on Word of Mouth. His post includes a link to a free copy of Dave Baltar's new book, The Word of Mouth Manual: Volume II.

I just read it and was very interested in the story of Top 40 radio and Kasey Kasem's Top 40 radio show. They theory is that people can only remember 40 songs, and that's why corporate radio plays the same songs over and over.

I say more power to them. You can't hear Danity Kane enough.

So that brings me to a list of the Top 40 brands that come to mind. They can be either positive or negative. I'll post a quick impression of the brand and note if they've sent me anything to evaluate:
1 Apple - Love the ease of use
2 Nokia - Open, best video ( N95, N800, N82, and a bunch of acessories )
3 Qik - People and one button streaming ( N95-3 )
4 Blip.tv - Great people and video hosting that works ( Pro Account )
5 Western Digital - Quiet, reliable hard drive, available at Apple Stores
6 Harpoon Beer - Fresh and local
7 JetBlue - Fun and lots of legroom
8 Flip - Easy way to shoot video
9 Nikon- Easy, high quality photos ( D80 )
10 Yamaha - Surround sound without all the speakers and wires
11 Janome sewing machine - Top of my mind for sewing machines from seeing it on NNN and Etsy
12 Revision 3 - Lots of news from them lately, Epic-Fu and Wine Library, Gary Vaynerchuk
13 Etsy - Craft and Bre Pettis
14 Chris Brogan - Lots of interesting info
15 Moblogic.tv - Lindsay Campbell presents her take on the news and includes us, great team!
16 SciFi - BSG
17 HBO - Quality, movies
18 AT&T - Good service ( cell service )
19 Comcast - Fast and reliable
20 TiVo - Best DVR
21 BMW - Quality
22 JP Licks - Free iced coffee on Father's Day
23 Real Deal Deli - Convenient fresh sandwiches
24 Sharp - HD TV
25 Sony - HD TV
26 Sam Adams - Boston beer company, quality
27 Epic Fu - Friends, Now twice a week and fun
28 Barack Obama - Next president with a brain
29 NBC - News
30 American Idol - Fun
31 Bravo - Reality
32 Get Smart - Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne Johnson. Loved the original.
33 Top Chef - Food and fun
34 Celtics - Beat LA!
35 WCVB TV Boston HD - Quality
36 Poland Spring - Sports Bottles
37 Jimmy Fund Dana Farber - Scooperbowl
38 Twitter - Friends
39 iJustine - Everywhere
40 Loic Le Meur - Building an open company ( investor )
Well that was an interesting exercise that didn't take too much time. It's interesting that in the top 5 brands I thought of, 3 of them have sent me products, and out of my top 10, 4 out of 10 have sent me something.

How does my list match yours?

Nokia N95 vs. N82

After two days with the trial N82, and taking photos today with the N95, I like the N82 much better. It finds focus and processes faster.

Scoble says Kyte.tv will kill Qik and Flixwagon in cell phone video space. He's wrong.

John Tobin, Nokia N95 and Monopod
Robert Scoble just wrote this post over at Techcrunch, Why Kyte.tv will kill Qik and Flixwagon in cell phone video space:
"I don’t see how Qik or Flixwagon can beat Kyte anymore in the cell phone video game. What do you think?"
I replied:
Robert,
Your title of, "Why Kyte.tv will kill Qik and Flixwagon in cell phone video space," is your opinion, will probably get you a lot of views, but you can't know this as a fact.

You sound like the political reporters who said it would be Hilary Clinton vs. Rudy Giuliani in this year's US Presidential election. They were wrong and could not possibly see the future.

Can't we all just get along?

I've been using Qik for quite a while now. I've met the people behind it and have gotten great support, as have you. Disclaimer, they sent me a Nokia N95-3 after watching my NH presidential primary coverage.

Watching videos on a Nokia
As others have said in the comments, your bullet list has a few facts that need to be corrected including the fact that you can now watch Qik videos on your Nokia device. They have 3GP files.

A Broadcast Studio with Mogulus
When you combine Qik with Mogulus you get the "ability to mix videos from your webcam, live videos streaming from your web cam, recorded videos from camcorders, or from places like YouTube, along with both recorded and streamed videos from your cell phone."

I recently did a presentation with Qik and Mogulus at Streaming Media East. Good stuff.

Here's a video from the session:
http://offonatangent.blogspot.com/2008/05/live-broadcasting-over-mobile-and-wi-fi.html

Multiple Videos in a player with YouTube
Yesterday I streamed videos from Boston City Councillor John Tobin's Parkway Family Day. Each of those videos was automatically sent to YouTube. I then added them all into a playlist and now you can watch all the video from one custom YouTube video player:

http://www.votejohntobin.com/blog/_archives/2008/6/14/3744096.html

Extensive Testing
I've also got Kyte, Flixwagon and Bambuser on my phone, but haven't "extensively tested" tested them as you have because Qik just works for me and the people are super.

Qik is People
It's a lot like the video hosting space. When I first started videoblogging I used a couple of services that had great features, then I moved to blip.tv, where in addition to having lots of features, they have a lot of great people providing support.

Kyte.tv will not kill Qik and Flixwagon in cell phone video space.

100 years to recover from Bush

100 years to recover from Bush:
"Madrid - It will take the United States a century to recover from the damage wreaked by President George. W Bush, US writer Gore Vidal said in an interview published on Saturday.

'The president behaved like a virtual criminal but we didn't have the courage to sack him for fear of violating the American constitution,' Vidal told the El Mundo newspaper.

The author, a trenchant critic of the US-led invasion of Iraq, said it would take the United States '100 years to repair the damage' caused by Bush.

'We live in a dictatorship. We have a fascist government ...which controls the media,' he said.

Vidal also said presidential aspirant Barack Obama was 'intelligent' adding that it would be a 'novelty' to have an 'intelligent' person in the White House."

15 questions for the presidential candidates

David Gergen and Andy Zelleke wrote an opinion piece in the Boston Globe today, A question of presidential leadership:
"Considering the stakes of this election, shouldn't part of the process of choosing the next president be a 'job interview' of sorts, designed to shed light on the candidates' leadership capacity? Voters deserve a better understanding of who the candidates really are; their aptitude for building teams and coalitions; their judgment and decision-making style; and the special competencies they bring to getting difficult things done.

To that end, the Center for Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and the Ken Blanchard Companies recently convened a diverse group of leaders from all sectors - government, corporate, and nonprofit - as well as academics and others who study leadership. Two hundred participants developed questions for the candidates that would help introduce them more fully as leaders to the American voter."
Since the Globe doesn't link to websites mentioned in it's articles, I went and found the site that has all the questions and lots of background.

The Center for Public Leadership (CPL) at Harvard Kennedy School, in association with The Ken Blanchard Companies, developed this site, HowYouLead.org. Take a look.

For those who didn't read the article, here's the list of 15 questions:
Who Are You Really?

1. Values: What are your five core values and how do they shape how you lead?
2. Attributes & Competencies: What are the attributes and competencies you value most in yourself that will serve you well in the White House?
3. Weaknesses & Mistakes: Recent American history has many examples of leaders whose weaknesses brought them down. What are your tendencies that could cause your presidency to fail?
4. People I Have Learned From: What historical figure has exercised leadership in a way that you aspire to? What were their strengths? Tell us about a situation that tested their leadership.
5. Multicultural Experience/World View: What experiences have helped you deeply understand the mindset and values of other cultures?

Who Will Be at The Table With You?

6. Building a Team: Tell us about a high performing team that you’ve built. What made it high-performing?
7. Coalition Building: Can you share some examples of when you were a catalyst who brought groups with polarized opinions together so that all voices were at the table?
8. Increasing Participation: The internet and technology have flattened the political playing field, allowing for more participation and collective decision making. How will you create a more participatory democracy and give people the opportunity to influence decision making?
9. Increasing Participation: Young people have engaged in this election in greater numbers than ever before. Please give us some examples of how you have listened and responded to the next generation in your campaign. How will you keep the next generation engaged?

How Will You Decide?

10. Decision Making Style: The president’s role requires decisiveness. Please share some examples of your ability and willingness to be decisive. Can you tell us about a time when a lack of decisiveness got you into trouble. In retrospect, what would you have done differently?
11. Judgment: Tell us about a time when your judgment was tested in crisis. What do you want us to appreciate about your judgment?

How Will You Act? And What Will You Act On?

12. Leading Change: Can you give us an example of how you have overcome resistance to bring about a needed change?
13. Innovative Thinking: How will you create an environment for innovation within your leadership team?
14. Building the Confidence of Others: What are the first few things you’ll do to raise confidence at home and abroad?
15. Priorities Indicative of Values: The USA ranks 1st in incarceration and 18th in high school graduation. What leadership skills and values do you bring to the challenge of reversing these numbers? Can you point to three things in your past that will help us understand that you care about this challenge?
Good questions.

Let's see if we get answers.

Nokia Phone Comparison: N82 vs N95

Nokia sent me an N82 to evaluate. I wanted to get one to see if it was a viable alternative to the N95 for streaming live video over Qik on the AT&T 3G network. They sent me a European version, so it doesn't have US 3G on it.

So while I had it, I took it out for a spin to see how it's camera compared to the N95 that I've had for a while...

Photos
Phone freak Robert Scoble carries around three phones, the Nokia N95, N82 and Apple iPhone... He says that the N82 takes the best pictures.

One thing that I noticed right away was the processing time it takes to refresh the camera and get ready for a new shot. On the N95 is seems like it can take minutes, the N82 processes the photo faster.

Burst Mode
Jamaica Pond: N82 Photo TestJamaica Pond: N82 Photo TestJamaica Pond: N82 Photo TestJamaica Pond: N82 Photo TestJamaica Pond: N82 Photo TestJamaica Pond: N82 Photo Test
With burst mode, the N82 can take 6 photos in a row without processing so there's a better chance you won't miss a shot if you have burst mode set. After the 6 photos are taken, they are processed.

For those of you not familiar with what I'm talking about, the Nokia N82 takes a moment after each shot to process and save the image. One my N95 I refer to this as the Polaroid moment, where you wait to see what the photo actually looks like.

One thing I really like it the shutter protector. When you slide it off the lens, the camera turns on...

Here's a photo slideshow, A Study in Trash:

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

These were all taken at ISO setting HIGH since that's the setting the last trial user left the camera on.

Shutter Button
Nokia N82 vs. N95

The shutter button is moved away from the edge of the phone. For an N95 user this takes getting used to, but for new N82 users, this shutter placement makes more sense. You can now stabilize to phone with our middle finger and shoot photos with your index finger.

Display Photo = No
If you shut of the display of photos after you shoot, you don't have to semi depress the shutter to enable taking another photo. I turned this on for a while, but then turned it off because I like seeing the photo right after I shoot it.

Grid
Nokia N82 vs. N95

New to the N82 is a grid that displays on the screen that allows to to follow the Rule of Thirds. I like this feature. Helps in composing shots and lining up horizons.

USB Cable
Nokia N82 vs. N95

The non standard micro USB cable makes it problematic to connect multiple devices to a computer. On my MacBook Pro I have a standard USB cable plugged in at all times so I can attach cameras and load in photos. When I tried to connect hte N82, the USB connection didn't match. This meant that I had to unplug the standard USB cable and plug in the USB cable that came in the box with the N82.

PC Transfer
Once I plugged in the cable, I found out that the photo transfer would not start without memory card inserted in the N82. I shut off the phone and inserted a 2BG card and the phone told me that it didn't see a memory card. I checked, and it had popped out, so I pugged it back in, and iPhoto recognized the card and showed me that the memory card had no photos to import. Right. They were all on the internal memory of the phone. D'oh!

File Manager
I ran File Manager and moved the pictures to an existing folder on the supplied memory card. It doesn't seem to allow you to move the folder over to the memory card. i wonder if the previous tester left photos on the memory card? Hmm. We'll see....

iPhoto recognized all the photos on the memory card, but no extras. :-)

Importing 67 photos.

All these photos were taken with the standard camera settings, Auto ISO, no post processing was done.

Created with Admarket's flickrSLiDR.

European Version
No 3G to test on this phone.

Function Keys
Nokia N82 vs. N95

The function keys are flush with the phone vs. raised on the N95. That is going to take some getting used to. I prefer the ergonomics of having raised keys so you don't have to look down to see where the key is. I'd like to see raised function keys on future N82's.

Unlock
To unlock the phone you have to press the * as the second key. That's a lot less easier than the way it works on the N95. A lot less.

First Impressions
Overall I liked how the camera on the N82 worked. It's a lot faster at both taking and processing photos. I felt that this camera has a better chance of capturing a fleeting moment than the N95. I really liked the grid feature, but am not happy with the non standard USB connection. Maybe it's different on the US version.

A Pint-Size Problem

Cisco Brewers Whale's Tail Pale Ale at Brotherhood of Thieves

A Pint-Size Problem - WSJ.com:
Jeff Alworth, a Portland, Ore., beer blogger, university researcher and a founder of the Honest Pint Project, has been testing suspected short-pouring bars, in some cases measuring his beer-glass capacity by the men's room sink. His group collected more than 400 names in two weeks for an online petition urging state regulators to enforce a 16-ounce rule. And at one point, he was posting the names of bars that didn't measure up on his Web site. But in response to complaints, he now has taken to listing the names of establishments serving full pints in bigger glasses. "I'm not a firebrand," says Mr. Alworth. "I am devoted to Oregon beer, and it seemed like using glasses where you don't get a 16-ounce pour was not so cool."
The Honest Pint Project. Sounds like a good crowd sourcing project for the Boston area.
