Homeland Series Premiere Full Episode
Wow! This is great to see the first episode online.
If the whole series was online, I'd get it there, and Pay Per Episode, instead of having to go through hoops to get Showtime added to my Comcast subscription.

2011 Online Journalism Award winners announced. Citizen Reporting Ignored.
At #ONA11 the 2011 Online Journalism Award winners were announced last night.
New platforms acknowledged, but not citizen reporting.
This year, the awards introduced changes to acknowledge the explosion of journalistic innovation on new digital platforms. Entries for all awards were open to news produced for any digital device.
“What’s most gratifying is to see the proliferation of quality work from next-generation digital journalists,” said Anthony Moor, OJA Chair. “While there is justifiable concern about the fate of numerous long-established newsrooms, there’s a healthy amount of excellent work coming from a new class of publications that don’t rely on broadcast or print to inform the public.”
Where are the bloggers?
What jumps out at me from the listing of award winners is the absence of winners in the Blogging category. Didn't any worthy bloggers enter?
Online Commentary/Blogging, Large SiteMaybe next year some medium and small blogs can enter some award winning Online Commentary.
Arianna Huffington – The Huffington Post
Online Commentary/Blogging, Medium Site
No award
Online Commentary/Blogging, Small
No award
How about adding a category for individuals?
Online Video. Where are the people?
Also, a glaring omission is in the Online Video category. You've got Large, Medium, Small and Student categories. What about Citizen Journalism category?
Online Video Journalism, Large SiteMaybe next year they can add Online Video Journalism, People?
Caught in the Crossfire: Victims of Gang Violence – Los Angeles Times
Online Video Journalism, Medium Site
Exile Without End: Palestinians in Lebanon – CBC News, Radio-Canada, ALT Digital Design Studio
Online Video Journalism, Small Site
Powering a Nation: Spilling Over – UNC News21
Online Video Journalism, Student
Haiti’s Lost Children – University of Miami (Tie)
Now What Argentina? – University of North Carolina & Universidad Pontifica de Argentina (Tie)
It would be nice for journalists to recognize excellence in Citizen Reporting.

Three New Social News Reading Apps for Facebook: WSJ, The Guardian, and Washington Post
WSJ Social on Facebook
The Guardian:
The Guardian on Facebook
Building on Guardian News & Media's recently-announced digital-first strategy and pioneering open approach to journalism, the Guardian is now among the first companies to make the news industry more social. The new Guardian Facebook app integrates with Facebook's Open Graph platform and the Guardian API, enabling Facebook users to read and experience Guardian content without leaving Facebook.
That means that all the familiar Facebook functionality is there as well – see the faces of other people who have interacted around the same content, discover news stories filtered by your social graph; comment, like and share articles, plus become a fan of specific Guardian and Observer sections to be alerted to the latest content you're interested in.
If you choose to use the app, then when you follow links on Facebook to the Guardian's website, you will be shown the content on a Facebook page. This enables you to see what your friends are also reading from the Guardian, and what is proving popular from the site among Facebook users.
The Washington Post:
The Washington POst Social Reader App on Facebook, include Mashable updates.

Sean Parker's new AirTime: Eliminating Loneliness via Online Video Sharing
Image: Courtesy Forbes
Great article in Forbes: Sean Parker: Agent Of Disruption:
Parker is also putting money and effort into Airtime, reuniting him with his old Napster partner, Fanning. Parker has been coy about the platform’s specifics but says it will offer communication and sharing in real time—something he thinks is underserved on the Web. Airtime will likely be a site where friends can post videos and react to them—and each other—live. “My pitch is eliminating loneliness,” Parker says. There’s also a random video chat function similar to last year’s voyeuristic flameout, the now defunct Chatroulette. It hits the same thread that has run through all of Parker’s projects: sharing and discovery.I'll be interested in testing out Airtime.

Steve Garfield on NECN: Facebook uses secret algorithms. They're actually reducing the noise of the internet.
My quote on NECN's report, Facebook gets a new look and an unfavorable response:
"Facebook uses secret algorithms and they decide based on your activity, your friends activity, who likes what, what might be most important to you,” said social media maven Steve Garfield. “They're actually reducing the noise of the internet."
Other changes include friend lists like Twitter, a real time ticker and promises of better video and music interfaces. Social media maven Steve Garfield says it's no coincidence that Facebook launched its revamp the same day Google+ opened membership of its new social network to the general public.
"They just added all these features that Facebook didn't have." said Garfield. "Facebook had to do something because of defectors//going to Google+ and I was one of them"

Meet Millie: On the Way to Becoming the World’s Oldest Elder Blogger
Nice article by Irene Levine about my mom:
Meet Millie: On the Way to Becoming the World’s Oldest Elder Blogger:
Millie is clearly smitten with blogging. "My life would be dull and empty without it," she says. "I'm able to learn from people all over the world. Then she adds: "When you're older, you don't have many listeners. The wonderful thing about blogging is that no one interrupts me."Yay mom!

Google Hangouts On Air
Hangouts On Air: Stream View (left), Full-screen Mode (right)
Google just announced a way for a limited number of people to broadcast their hangouts.
Google+: 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99... 100.
93. Hangouts On AirThis is great. I can't wait to get in on the trial.
Google+ users already use Hangouts to create intimate onscreen experiences—with family members, prayer groups, even people with certain medical conditions. But sometimes you want to speak to a large audience, or alternatively, view as a spectator. In these cases a public broadcast is what’s needed, so today we’re introducing Hangouts On Air.
The setup is simple enough: just start a normal hangout, and you’ll have the option to broadcast and record your session. Once you’re “On Air,” up to nine others can join your hangout (as usual), and anyone can watch your live broadcast.
We’re starting with a limited number of broadcasters, but any member of the Google+ community can tune in. In fact: we’ll be hosting our very first On Air hangout with will.i.am on Wednesday night, September 21. For more information visit will.i.am’s or my profile on Google+.

Goodbye Netflix
Canceled Netflix Unlimited Streaming at $7.99 a month.
Hanging on to the 1 DVD out at-a-time with Blu-ray for now.
Verizon MiFi 4G LTE
The Verizon MiFi 4G LTE (4510L) is the easiest device I've set up in a long time.
Basically you just pop in your SIM card and battery, then plug it in to get powered up, and turn it on.
The device shows up in a list of available local WiFi hotspots.
Next you select the hotspot and key in your password which can be found on a sticker on the bottom of the device, and on a slip of paper included with the device.
The font size on the password though is a huge failure at user interface design. You need magnifying glasses to be able to read it. In addition to the font being minuscule, the pasword is a string of numbers that looks like this:
4780000032589987
Would be very nice if the font was much bigger and the numbers separated for readability like this:
4780 0000 3258 9987
See?
As for performance, the speeds to the naked eye are very fast and after first use, no dropped connection.
The power adapter is yet another design in the history of power adapters. The Verizon MiFi 4G LTE is powered by USB, but the size of the wall plug is enormous compared to those from Apple or Kodak. You also have to install the power plug into the power adapter. So Lame.
As an alternative to the problematic USB 551L USB Modem, I can strongly recommend the Verizon MiFi 4G LTE.
The Verizon MiFi 4G LTE installs without any installation.
The USB 551L USB Modem install was painful on an old XP machine, could have been an older version of XP on that one, but also problematic with the USB 551L USB Modem was the USB extension cable that was strongly suggested and didn't sit well at all on a few laptop screens that I tested it on.
The display shows the signal and battery strength, and also how many WiFi users are connected to the hotspot.
This is a good device.

70% of mobile searches lead to action within one hour
I'm trying to track down the original source of this quote:
"70% of mobile searches lead to action within one hour"
Laura Fitton tweeted it after Butch Stearns said it at the Inbound Marketing Summit.
A Google search lead me to this post by Brenna Hanly:
10 Takeaways from the MMA’s Mobile Marketing Forum:
Mobile is about action. One of the most insightful presentations was conducted by Jamie Wells at Microsoft. According to his research, one of the distinctions between mobile and the PC is that mobile is about immediate action. 70% of mobile searches lead to action within one hour vs. one month for 70% of PC search users to take action. Now all I need is a link to the research.

101-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WITH AN 81-YEAR-OLD CAR
After six decades, Margaret Dunning still breezes down the road in her creamy 740 Packard roadster.
Read more:
Packard, 81, Is a Youngster to Its Driver:
When she was 12 her father died, and his Model T Ford became hers.via [ Time Goes By ]
Once her politically connected mother, who had arthritic feet and could not drive cars, finagled a driver’s license for the 12-year-old Margaret, she drove her mother everywhere. Her mother drove the farm’s four teams of horses.
“If you had just a little knowledge and some baling wire and bob pins, you could keep the thing going,” she said of the Model T. “It was the little car that made America.”
She cherished her time in the car alone, reaching into the wind for roadside stalks of fragrant sweet clover. “I’d see a few friends or race past a blind pig,” she said, using the euphemism for Prohibition-era drinking establishments. “Before I could get home, people would be calling saying, ‘I think I just saw Margaret, with quite a dust pile behind her.’ ”

For those reading outside of JP - these lunatics do not represent 99% of JP residents
Group opposing store arrival demands Whole Foods sign deal, donate revenue - Jamaica Plain - Your Town - Boston.com:
"InJPwithcommonsense wrote:
For those reading outside of JP - these lunatics do not represent 99% of JP residents, no matter how shrill their whining becomes. This "group" is a bunch of 20-something socialist-leaning hipsters who choose to ignore the real issues at hand in JP (read: gang violence, violent crime, terrible schools) in favor of trying to stop a grocery store from moving into the space previously occupied by a grocery store."
Whole Foods rejects special community fund for Jamaica Plain:
In related news and noted in Tuesday's statement, Whole Foods announced last week that Jennifer Licht, a seven-year JP resident and Whole Foods employee of six years, will be the new store’s marketing team leader and community liaison when it opens in late fall.
An earlier press release from the company said she will be "responsible for connecting with Jamaica Plain’s schools, committees and non-profits. In addition to handling store donations, her responsibilities will also include organizing store tours and hosting events and classes in-store and in the community."
“I love living in JP, and working for Whole Foods Market. The opportunity to blend the two is very exciting to me,” Licht, who most recently worked as a healthy eating specialist at the company’s Brighton store said in the release. “As a mom and a resident of JP, I appreciate the responsibility that we all share in supporting our neighborhood. I am eager to get started showing people how Whole Foods Market truly cares about our communities and our environment.”
In the statement from Whole Foods:
...we are now focusing 100% of our energy on opening our new store in Jamaica Plain.
