How the FREE Wired Magazine iPad Reader on the iPad Works

Wired App on an iPad

I was just reading the hard copy of Wired Magazine and saw a section called APP FAQS, which answers some questions about the Wired Reader on the iPad, but with information that is already out of date.

Some highlights:
The app now costs $3.99. [Editor's Note: Not any more]

We'll offer bundled print/iPad Subscription options starting this Fall.
That's not right.

When I go to the App Store, the App is now FREE.

I searched for more and found this, Wired’s iPad App Boasts a New Feature: A Price Cut:
The second edition of Condé Nast’s much-praised Wired magazine iPad app is out, and it boasts some new features. The biggest one: A 20 percent price cut.

The magazine publisher sold some 95,000 digital copies of its June issue at $4.99, the same price the ink-and-paper edition commands. So why sell the July issue at $3.99–while also knocking down the price of the first issue to the same level?

Condé says it will be experimenting with digital magazine pricing for months to come.

The app itself is now a free “wrapper” that you’ll use to purchase, view and store different issues of the magazine. If you purchased the first edition of the magazine and want to buy another one, you’ll have to go through the slightly cumbersome process of downloading the new app, then reloading the old issue back into the wrapper. There’s no cost to reload the issue, but it will take time, as it’s a really big file.
It was confusing to be selling multiple version of the app, as issues of the magazine. This is a better way to do it. Give away the app for free, and allow in app purchases of new issues.

Much clearer.

Fast Company Influence Project

The Fast Company Influence Project is lame because it's not measuring influence, but is an artificial popularity contest.

But, wait a minute, I'm in the 99th percentile.

Hmm, let me rethink this. ;-)

Only kidding.

Note:
Click the Fast Company Influence Project link and the scale of my influence, and therefore the size of my photo, gets bigger.

Bill Cammack: Thoughts about the “Fast Company Influence Project”
I can’t tell you anything about the actual Fast Company Influence Project because I never clicked on it. I never came close to clicking on it, which is where I feel we will discover some of the myriad lessons to be learned from this situation.

Becky McCray: Old Spice vs Fast Company
Fast Company is a well known forward-thinking business magazine. Conventional wisdom says they should have succeeded in a social campaign. P&G is the corporate behemoth behind the brand Old Spice. They should have had trouble with a social campaign. Turns out, that is exactly backwards.

Documenting Your "Now" For The Future

I'm excited to be able to take part in Discovery Channel's The Colony social experiment.

I created a video to share tips on how to report the news with a videocamera. This is something that I'm passionate about and am happy that I get to spread the word further along via social media.

Here the video:

Watch on YouTube.

When you enter the The Colony, you're presented with a 'Facebook-like' community.

You can particiapte at:

http://jointhecolony.com

Here's what The Colony site looks like TO ME, when I'M signed in through FACEBOOK:

The Colony: Site Screenshot

When YOU sign in, you'll see yourself there. Everyone's experience will be different, depending on whether they sign in with Facebook or not. Neat!

My post looks like this:

The Colony: Video Post Screenshot

Here's the description:
Now's a great time to learn how to document the world around you. Citizen journalism is more important then ever ... and anyone can report and share the news! Steve Garfield reports.

This is a rough transcript of the contents of the video:

Hi, this is Steve Garfield from SteveGarfield.com, author of Get Seen, Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business.

In times like these with rapidly changing news events, WE need to be prepared to share information.

Citizen reporters, performing acts of journalism, are an important part of the news process, sharing stories, sometimes faster than mainstream media.

II'm going to highlight the tools that you can use, and how to share your video stories with them.

First, let's look at cameras...

The best camera to use, is the one that you have with you.

Does your cellphone have a video camera? [ Show iPhone 3GS ]

How about your digital still camera? [ Show Panasonic ]

You can also use a pocket HD video camera. [ Show Kodak Zi8 ]

All these tools depend on power. Make sure you have extra batteries, or chargers. If the power goes out, you can use chargers to run off of car batteries. [ Show Duracell Charger ]

When shooting your video, keep these tips in mind.

- Think about Sound
- Look for the Light [ LitePanel MicroPro LED Light ]
- Hold the Camera Steady

Once you've shot your video, you'll want to share it.

The best way to do that is to share it with friends. Your friends won't want you emailing them videos because that fills up their mailboxes, so you'll want to host the video somewhere and then share it with a link.

Some social media sites you could upload your video to include YouTube and Facebook. Once you've got y our video up there, you can easily share it's link.

Also, if you want people to find your videos, make sure you give them descriptive titles, and tags.

If possible add a transcript so your video can be found when people are searching for the content of your video on sites like Google, YouTube or BING.

One more way to share video from a computer with a webcam. You can either record video directly up to YouTube or Facebook, or live stream to sites like UStream.

You can also live stream from cell phones.

What will help you capture a story when something happens is to be prepared. This means that you have experience recording and sharing video.

Practice NOW.

- KNOW How to turn the camera on and put it into record mode
- KNOW How to you review the footage you've shot
- KNOW How to quickly share it

I'll be looking forward to seeing your news worthy video.

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead

Brian Halligan and David Meerman Scott have written a new book, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead.

Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead
Image Courtesy Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead

I've gotten a sneak peek at the Foreward by Bill Walton, basketball legend and Deadhead, the Introduction and the Chapter, Bring People on an Odyssey.

This book is going to be a fun ride!

Bill Walton writes in the Foreward:
More than 45 years ago a bunch of young guys in the San Francisco Bay Area, living in their cars and on tomato soup made from tap water and ketchup packages lifted from fast- food restaurants, had a dream and vision of driving the train that would change our world on so many fronts.

That band of merry pranksters ultimately became the Grateful Dead. They have changed the way we live and think—in ways we don’t even know. But of all the lasting impact that they have bestowed upon us, who would have ever thought that it would be their business and marketing models that would today be the envy of the culture that they all fought so hard to change.

And now a couple of young scientists, economists and historians, true new-age Cosmic Charlies—Brian Halligan and David Meerman Scott—have help on the way. They have come up with a fascinating story of how the Grateful Dead’s counter-intuitive ways of doing business are really best business practices that work for everyone.

Brian and David’s newest book, Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead, is like a powerful, hard-charging anthem that fills in so many blanks while closing the circle of life all around us. Like the Grateful Dead, Brian and David are transformational visionaries with a keen eye for the second set.
We love Bill Walton in Boston. He's such a smart guy!

First Hearing the Music

In the book we get to hear how Brian and David first heard the Dead's music.
David first heard the band’s music just before he started high school. His next-door neighbor, a college student, played Grateful Dead music, loudly, from his bedroom window all summer. The music grew on him and he saw his first live concert on January 17, 1979, in New Haven, Connecticut. He was hooked for life, collecting live concert tapes and seeing the band another 41 times. Brian was in high school when he was indoctrinated into the band by his friend, who blasted the Grateful Dead while they painted houses on Cape Cod during the summer. Brian hitchhiked to his first concert in Saratoga Springs, New York, and that concert sparked a lifelong love— he’s seen over 100 shows since.
For me it was the same thing, in college at UMass Amherst, I had a roommate that listened to the Grateful Dead constantly. I ended up becoming a fan and playing their songs on my college radio show.

Marketing Lessons

In the introduction, we're introducted to one of the Grateful Dead's marketing lessons, the "fremium" business model:
In the 1960s the Grateful Dead pioneered many social media and inbound marketing concepts that businesses across all industries use today. The band made a series of difficult and often unpopular decisions in order to differentiate themselves from their competition by providing the highest quality service to their fans. They were not simply selling a product. The Dead pioneered a “freemium” business model, allowing concert attendees to record and trade concert tapes, building a powerful word-of-mouth fan network powered by free music. Instead of obsessing over recording, the Dead became the most popular touring band of their era, selling hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of tickets, and creating a highly profitable corporation in the process.
Examples of What you'll Learn in Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead:
1. Rethink traditional industry assumptions
Rather than focus on record albums as a primary revenue source (with touring to support album sales), the Dead created a business model focused on touring. Now, entirely new opportunities emerge for those willing to challenge established business models. The Grateful Dead teaches us that business model innovation is fre- quently more important than product innovation.

2. Turn your customers into evangelists
Unlike nearly every other band, the Grateful Dead not only encouraged concertgoers to record their live shows, they actually established “taper sections” where fans’ equipment could be set up for the best sound quality. When nearly every other band said “No,” the Grateful Dead created a huge network of people who traded tapes inpre-Internet days. The broad exposure led to millions of new fans and sold tickets to the live shows. Today, as many companies experiment with offering valuable content on the Web, the Grateful Dead teaches us that when we free our content, more people hear about our company and eventually do business with us.

3. Bypass accepted channels and go direct
In the early 1970’s The Grateful Dead were one of the first bands to create a mailing list where they announced tours to fans first. Later, they established their own ticketing office, providing the most loyal fans with the best seats in the house. The Grateful Dead teaches us that building a community and treating customers with care and respect drives passionate loyalty.

4. Build a huge, loyal following
The Grateful Dead let their audience define the Grateful Dead experience. Concerts were a happening, a destination where all 20,000 or more audience members were actually part of the experience. Making fans an equal partner in a mutual journey, the Grateful Dead teaches us that our community defines who we are. In an era of instant communications on Twitter, blogs, and the like, we learn that companies cannot force a mindset on their customers.
Aren't these examples cool?

The book also includes photos by Jay Blakesberg and original illustrations by Richard Biffle.

I really enjoyed getting a sneak peek at Marketing Lessons from the Grateful Dead. The band was so smart. I've used examples from the band when explaining marketing concepts too, and I'm glad that Brian and David have compiled them in what is going to be a great book.

This book is going to be a fun read and I can't wait to get a full copy.

Hawaii Five-0 Promo Shoot for WBZ and CBS

These are some photos I took from a Boston Duck Tours Duck Boat while shooting a Hawaii Five-0 promo spot for WBZ TV and CBS.

We had a Duck Boat full of people singing the Hawaii Five-0 theme, with a trailing Duck Boat behind us to capture all the footage. It was a beautiful day for a free duck boat ride o nthe Charles River.

It was especially fun for me to be able to take some beautiful photos of Boston.

Smarter, Faster, Cheaper: New Social Media Books to Pre-Order

Being an author, it's exciting to watch my friends get closer to releasing their own books. When planning the release of a book it's a good idea to have a landing page for it.  I tested out a few ideas before launching my book, Get Seen's page.  One page was a static splash page, and one was a NING community site.  I went with the community site after getting feedback that people liked being able to interact.

I used http://stevegarfield.com/getseen as the book's URL in all my marketing. It's a redirect which currently goes to http://getseen.ning.com/. Soon I'll be changing it to link to http://facebook.com/getseen.

Get Seen Facebook Page

When NING stated that they were going to start charging for community sites, I figured it would be worth it to continue paying if I was getting value from the site. At the same time, changing to a paid model made me think about moving.

After looking around at all the activity happening on Facebook, I decided to move my book's community over there. People have complained about the 'foreign' interface of NING, compared to the familiar interface of Facebook.  I've noticed that I get a lot more activity on my blog posts when I link to them over on my own personal Facebook page, http://facebook.com/stevegarfield.

Let's look at the new books and their sites.

Smarter, Faster, Cheaper
My new friend, David Siteman Garland, just went live with his new book's website, Smarter, Faster, Cheaper. I like how he gives the site visitor ways to purchase the book, and how he integrates with Facebook by providing a 'LIKE button.'
