SXSW 2017

SXSW 2017

Three people of SXSW 2017.

CASEY NEISTAT
Casey has no idea what he is doing at CNN, but in his talk, he said that he has NEVER had any idea what he was doing. That’s what CNN needs. Someone to experiment, see what works, and throw away failures.

SXSW2017

His tech team is building apps and I think we’ll see lots of experiments with conversations with real people. Also, he mentions the hundreds of CNN bureaus around the world and helicopters!

It will be exciting.

GARY VAYNERCHUK
Gary was greeting people before his keynote at the door to the conference room.

SXSW2017

The funny moment came when he was going ON HIS LEFT TEHN ON HIS RIGHT, taking selfies. I jumped in on his LEFT and he looked in my phone, then saw a selfie with me in it and TURNED to me IN REAL LIFE and said HEY STEVE GARFIELD!

So funny!

ROBERT SCOBLE
So much.

I heard some interesting news about Apple’s entrance into the VR/AR market. They are reportedly building their own CDN to carry all the data people will use with new AR/VR devices.

SXSW2017

Reportedly they will come out with products that will be easily adopted by the market which do not require large and powerful PC’s to run like current VR products.

There will be options to slip your NEW iPhone into a headset, and also use some type of eyeglass/headset that will be inexpensive and be powered by a connected iPhone.

In the group I was in, everyone said they would buy all the new products.

No one has market share in AR/VR and it is a BIG opportunity for Apple.

On the other hand, many features of these new apps are also found in current phones so there’s always the chance that adoption will be smaller and slower.

But, if Apple brings out AR/VR products for THE REST OF US, it could be huge.

Time will tell…..

The Road to SXSW 2015 with me and CC Chapman on Meerkat and G+ Hangouts On Air

Watch the archive of me and CC Chapman talk about things to do at SXSW 2015 on Monday March 16th.

See what I did there?

YouTube Archive:

Excerpt of the Meerkat stream:

CC joined me on G+ and we also streamed live on Meerkat, because it's the thing to do.

CC and I shared tips for SXSW and our top picks for daytime sessions and events, and evening events and parties. We've been to SXSW for more years than we can remember, so we know stuff.
This was the promo:

The Road to SXSW 2015 with me and Raul Colon on Meerkat and G+ Hangouts On Air

Raul Colon and I chatted about The Road to SXSW 2015 3/7 at 2:00 ET.

The Pre-Show was at 1:30 ET.

A TWO PERSON TALK SHOW ON MEERKAT via G+
I started up the live stream on both Meerkat and G+, and brought Raul on as a guest on G+. Then I pointed the iPhone, runningMeerkat, at the G+ Hangout, and we now were broadcasting a two person talk show on Meerkat, with me in Boston and Raul in Puerto Rico.

As you can see from the image we had 51 watching on Meerkat. That got up to a high of 66. Amazing. Over on G+ we had 1 viewer. This shows the power of the new platform to easily bring in viewers.

We gave tips and talked about sessions, events, and parties for SXSW days 3/14 and 3/15.

It was a great experience.

ARCHIVED VIDEOS
Here's the YouTube Archive:

Also on YouTube.

Below is the Meerkat archive, uploaded to YouTube, with BONUS post-show chat.

In it I showed Raul what the Meerkat screen looked like when streaming:

Should World Domination Summit become more like SXSW?

World Domination Summit 2013

I've been going to SXSW for over seven years now, and this was my first time at World Domination Summit. I went based on the recommendation of my friend CC Chapman. He raved about last year's conference.
Little moments of magic are hard to explain.

When you live through one, you know in your heart and soul that you were part of something and yet trying to explain it to others who did not witness it in person is near impossible. This is where I am now. Trying to explain this past weekend in Portland at the World Domination Summit.
There were approximately 2,000 more people this year. The conference is growing, and with that growth, it might be experiencing some pain.

Many attendees have written about the inspiring and amazing speakers. A selection of posts are linked to over here: WDS 2013: A Partial and Impartial Recap.

I enjoyed many of the speakers too, but there are some things that could be improved for next year:

THE VENUE

The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall was a beautiful hall, but it wasn't open all day.

MAIN HALL CLOSED 12:30 - 4:30

The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall was closed between lunch and the afternoon speakers which started at 4:30. This meant that attendees were on their own for about four hours in the middle of the day, not including the breakout workshop sessions.

At SXSW, the main conference center is open all day. Sessions also happen throughout the day too. That leads to random interaction between attendees. If you don't have anywhere to go, you can head over to the convention center and and sit on the ground floor by the doors, in the hallways, or at a blogger lounge. You could even drop into a session to see if you like it. I use the rule of two feet. Since many of the sessions are in the same building, if you don't like one session, you can leave and check out another.

BREAKOUT WORKSHOP SESSIONS

The breakout workshop sessions were first-come first-served. Some people who wanted to attend were turned away. In other cases, a speaker was brought into the hallway so the overflow crowd could listen. If the main venue was open all day, breakout sessions could be held in larger rooms that could handle more people. Overflow rooms with a video feed is another solution to lack of space.

Every year SXSW learns which popular speakers to put in larger rooms.

World Domination Summit 2013 IS SPONSOR FREE

There were no corporate sponsors at World Domination Summit.

At the end of the day one, attendees were encouraged to check out the Jazz Fest, explore the city, or attend some meetups.

At SXSW, each night there are many sponsored events that attendees can meet at. I don't think sponsorship is a bad thing when it helps bring people together.

Allhat III

That's the All Hat party at SXSW sponsored by Chevy. They got up and said a few words and that was it. No hard sell. Those that were interested could go talk with the Chevy representatives. I did and ended up taking a few cars on a test drive. Win/Win.

It'll be interesting to see what World Domination Summit does for 2014. Get smaller, stay the same, or get larger.

I hope these thoughts help to make it better.

Update:

Figured out how to edit Vines together on a Mac.

- Right Click on Video, Choose Save As. (Thanks Jesse Luna for this tip)

Note: Use a numerical numbering system with the first video 1.mp4, then 2.mp4, etc.

- In the Finder, select all the videos, and open with MPEG Steamclip.
- Save as MP4 in BEST QUALITY.

Here's all 12 videos combined on YouTube:
