How To Get Flickr Android App to work with Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100

Note: This post is now updated with a workaround to get the Flickr App on the Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100.

Visited the Google Play Store to grab a copy of Flickr for the Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100.

"Your device isn't compatible with this version."

Curious.

Samsung Galaxy Camera EK-GC100 Screenshots

What's up with that?

Thanks @SamsungMobileUSA for the review unit.

Update:

You have to download the Flickr Android App outside of the Google Play Store.

Found this on the Flickr Group Discussion:
KoukiFC3S says:

I just picked up my Galaxy Camera, and have also uploaded the Flickr apk here: www.droidbin.com/p17ikcfmlad5k1c3s1g481ina1fec3

[If it's not ok to post this apk here, please delete my post]

You will have to go to settings, security and enable installs from unknown sources.

Instagram can make money off your pictures, but you can't have any!

Jon Keller and me, the new I Team!
Image: Jon Keller and me, the new I Team!

Jon Keller interviewed me about the uproar over Instagram's plans to update their terms of use. We talked about what's changing, alternative photo sharing apps like Flikr, and what people on Social Media are saying. We also talked about what makes Instagram special.

Here's the interview that aired, 12/18, at 5:40 PM to CBS Boston WBZ TV News.

These Terms of Use are effective on January 16, 2013.
Excerpt:

Instead, you hereby grant to Instagram a non-exclusive, fully paid and royalty-free, transferable, sub-licensable, worldwide license to use the Content that you post on or through the Service, except that you can control who can view certain of your Content and activities on the Service as described in the Service's Privacy Policy, available here: http://instagram.com/legal/privacy/.

The Verge: Instagram backlash is Flickr's gain

Update 12/18 5:02 PM:

Thank you, and we’re listening:
The language we proposed also raised question about whether your photos can be part of an advertisement. We do not have plans for anything like this and because of that we’re going to remove the language that raised the question. Our main goal is to avoid things likes advertising banners you see in other apps that would hurt the Instagram user experience. Instead, we want to create meaningful ways to help you discover new and interesting accounts and content while building a self-sustaining business at the same time.
I'll wait to see their changes, then decide if they listened.

Update 12/19:

Great read. Instagram didn’t get the tone wrong:
"...this is completely wrong. The Ts and Cs were absolutely clear, even if their content was controversial.

By contrast, the ‘clarification’ is slippery, mealy-mouthed and contradictory."
Absolutely the best writing on what is happening.

New Media Tools for Journalism Slides - 10/23/09

Best. Class. Ever.

I taught New Media Tools for Journalism at BU today and had the best time. The students were enthusiastic and excited to learn new ways to tell stories using a cellphone. This class could have gone on all day long since there's so much to cover. We had lots of fun using the new tools in class.

New Media Tools For Journalism

In this class we take a tour though the tools you can use to report stories with a cellphone. Text, photo, audio and video, using tools like twitter, flickr, utterli, blogtalkradio, ustream, and qik. Auto post to twitter when you send a photo in to flickr.

These two tweets are what it's all about:

Thanks to the students for making it a great class.

Flickr Needs to Update Creative Commons Support

I've manually gone in and custom coded the way I want my flickr photos posted to my blog. I've added the Creative Commons license. Creative Commons is a cool way to allow people to share your work.

From the Creative Commons site:
Creative Commons is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to making it easier for people to share and build upon the work of others, consistent with the rules of copyright.

We provide free licenses and other legal tools to mark creative work with the freedom the creator wants it to carry, so others can share, remix, use commercially, or any combination thereof.
Flickr should automaticaly post the photo and license information for everyone's photo when their photo is shared on another site.

They don't do this.

Note: Flickr makes it easy to share photos with the 'Blog This' and 'Share This' links on each photo's page.

You Can Modify Your Own 'Blog This' Settings
Flickr allows you to modify the photo caption on your own photos. I modified mine to look like the caption above.

BLOG THIS
When you click on blog this from your own flickr account, this modified caption gets posted to your blog.

Creative Commons
Over on the creative commons site, you can choose a license, and get custom code genereated that you can use.

Here's the code that was generated for this photo:
Creative Commons License
Stata Watercolor by Steve Garfield is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States License.
Based on a work at www.flickr.com.
I'm thinking about combining the two.

Flickr Should Suport Creative Common for BLOG THIS and SHARE THIS
The larger question though is why doesn't Flickr support the creative commons code when you use 'blog this' or 'share this/embed' from someone else's photo?

That's when it's most needed.

Here's a photo I grabbed from kk+ by clicking Share This, then clicking embed:

IMG_9100

Obviously flickr knows the Creative Commons license already. Why can't they generate the license along with the attribution to the photographer something like this:

IMG_9100
IMG_9100 by kk+, on Flickr CC BY-NC-SA

Flickr Needs to Update Thier Creative Commons Licenses
One more thing, this license is old. There's a new one flickr should be using.

"A new version of this license is available. You should use it for new works, and you may want to relicense existing works under it. No works are automatically put under the new license, however."

Over on the Flickr Ideas message board updating creative commons is being discussed. I asked for an update.

I'm also talking with Creative Commons about this.

Look for me at CES wearing this Liquid Image HD Video Underwater Camera

I'm heading out to CES tomorrow morning as a guest of Panasonic.

At least I hope to be heading out, the Boston Twitter Storm Report says "Snow develops across the region this evening to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain after midnight."

Perfect, freezing rain.

Panasonic had planned to send out five bloggers, but one just had to have emergency gall bladder surgery. Get well soon Cliff.

Greg Verdino explains everything about the trip on his blog. Basically, Panasonic is covering my flight and hotel, and taking us out to dinner, letting us use their products, and showing us what they are up to.

There's no requirement for us to blog about Panasonic, just to make one post a day and one after CES. So if you see the tag LIHD on my post, that's for Panasonic and means Living in HD.

Upcoming Events I'll Be At
Panasonic Presents... A CES Tweet-Up in High Definition - Thursday January 8, 2009 from 6:30pm - 8:00pm
2009 "It Won't Stay in Vegas" Blogger Party -Friday January 9, 2009 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm. Pre-registration required.

On Thursday, sometime between 12 and 2 I'll be at the Intel booth with Sarah Austin doing a video streaming broadcast over WiMax.

Follow Me
Check out SteveGarfield.com for updates. The main page will show my most recent Qik and blip.tv videos, my Friendfeed stream and flickr photos.

You can also follow me on twitter.

What I'm Looking Forward To

People. Although there are going to be 2,700 vendors at CES, there are also going to be 120,000 people there. CES IS PEOPLE!

The last time I went to CES was in 2006.

You can't find a booth at CES

Back then there wasn't any twitter. We had to walk five miles to school, up a hill, with no shoes.

This year there are a lot of bloggers and social media people headed to CES. So although there are going to be thousands of peope there, I think it's going to feel a lot like a mini-SXSW.

HP is sponsoring a CntrStg bloggers lounge at the Wynn January 7, 2009 - Sunday January 11, 2009 from 4:00pm - 12:00pm. I'll make sure I stop by to hang out over there. You'll need to register for that.

So I'm looking forward to seeing lots of people that I only get to see a few times a year.

I'm also looking forward to shooting some fun video projects. You'll see those when they happen!

I want to wear that Liquid Image HD contraption and shoot some video. Isn't it the perfect looking device for a videoblogger?

Vendors I'm looking forward to meeting up with include Mogulus, Qik, TiVo, Nokia, and Kodak.

I'm very interested in seeing how the Panasonic HDC-SD100 HD camcorder works. The only HD I've had a chance to work with is the Kodak Zi6.

If you are going to CES, drop a note in the comments and let me know what you are looking forward to.

If you aren't going, leave me a note about what you want me to go check out for you.

Favorite Photos of 2007

Here's my favorite photo of 2007:

Carol Keeps Her Distance From A Horse

It's from wine country in Napa and tells a funny story. Good memories.

Here's a set of the rest of my favorite photos I shot in 2007. Thanks to Nikon for sending me D80. That's what made most of these photos possible. I love the aperture priority on it and the compact size of the 18-135mm lens. I've had 6 months with the camera and now I have to decide if I want to keep it for 6 more months, send it back, or buy it for $500. I'm leaning towards buying it. The other photos are taken with either my Digital Rebel, Nokia N95 or iPhone. The iPhone takes surprisingly good photos.

Now Selling My Photos on ImageKind

Imagekind and Flickr have teamed up to allow you to sell your photos online. Based on early reports, people think it's great. You get to keep 100% of the profit on your photos.

Browse my new photo gallery at ImageKind.

Notes on my experience when setting up my imagekind gallery:

1. The ability to browse your flickr photos from within imagekind is well integrated, but I was only able to view 50 out of 121 pages of flickr photos.

2. Browsing of flickr sets is a nice feature.

3. Ability to change % markup across all photos is nice.

4. When adding photos to an existing gallery, there's no indication of how many more you can add.

5. I'd like to have an imagekind link automatically added to my photos over on flickr on those that are now for sale.

6. It would be nice to have each image default to being a 'photograph'.

7. When editing an image description it would be nice if you could have a next button so you could go directly to the next photo in the gallery for editing instead of having to press save, then select the next photo.
