Bringing the world closer together

Chuck Olsen and Steve Garfield Interview
Corey Boutilier of independentfilm.com interviewed Chuck and me at the recent Woods Hole Film Festival. We had a great time sitting out by the water, eating lunch and being interviewed.

VIDEO INTERVIEW: Steve Garfield and Chuck Olsen - Video Bloggers
TRT: 10min

In the interview we talk about "What is Video Blogging", "Examples", and "How to get started"

After the interview, we swapped stories about independent documentary film making. It was great fun.

KQED likes me

KQED | On Demand (Beta):
"Podcasting, video blogging, RSS feeds, citizen journalism, citizen media, online on-demand media, timshifting, placeshifting. Maybe you are familiar with some of these Internet buzz terms... or maybe we are speaking Greek to you. Either way, KQED has launched this beta version of our first foray into bringing great on-demand media to our online audience.

Here you will find not only some of the first online-only original programming created by KQED, but also online programming from other public broadcasters, and, in the spirit of keeping the 'public' in public broadcasting, we will also feature media produced by citizen media producers. "
Check out a list of their favorite Podcasts and Citizen media on the right sidebar.

That's Not Right: Bank of America Sign In

I went over to the Bank of America | Home Page | Online Banking Sign In and noticed that the URL of the page was a standard http, instead of the secure https that I'm used to seeing.

Bank of America explains:
Browser security indicators

You may notice when you are on our home page that some familiar indicators do not appear in your browser to confirm the entire page is secure. Those indicators include the small "lock" icon in the bottom right corner of the browser frame and the "s" in the Web address bar (for example, "https").

To provide the fastest access to our home page for all of our millions of customers and other visitors, we have made signing in to Online Banking secure without making the entire page secure. Again, please be assured that your ID and passcode are secure and that only Bank of America has access to them.
So anyone could set up a non secure page and then post a text message that says, "Really, trust us, go ahead, don't worry about anything, we've got it covered."

The whole reason for those security indicators is to give us an indication that the page is secure.

Hey Bank of America, if you're concerend about providing fast access to a secure sign on, how about giving us a dedicated Online Banking Sign In page with the standard security indicators?

Blogging makes her feel good

My mom explains why blogging makes her feel good in her post Eighty on the Eighteenth:
"In a few days I am going to be eighty years old! I just typed that and I can not believe it, maybe I feel it sometimes but I sure don't think or act it.

One of the reasons I feel so good is that I have something that I am involved in, excited about and look forward to. You guessed it, it's blogging."
Yay mom!

Propaganda Podcasting Software

Scoble says that Propaganda Podcasting Software is:
... the coolest podcasting tool I've seen yet. Wow. This gives you a lot of control of audio files and a neat interface to impress your friends with. Far more than I need, but way better than Adam Curry's software or what I've seen from Evan Williams so far.
Since I don't want to use Regedit to make Castblaster work, I'll try this.

Update:
Castblaster is now dead to me.

I just installed Propaganda on Carol's Dell Laptop, and it ran right 'out of the box.'

Plugged in a microphone and Propoganda recorded the audio with no problems.

At first glance, here are some reasons that I like it:

1. It works on a Dell laptop without requiring me to mod the system using regedit.
2. Allows you to record seperate clips and then edit them together on a timeline.
3. Has a feature for you to make transitions between audio segments.
4. Has inbuilt sound effects that you can drop onto the timeline.

Instead of being a straight one shot recorder like Castblaster, this audio recording program is a lot more like Final Cut Pro. It allows you to record a bunch of audio clips and edit them together. Looks sweet.

I'll be testing this some more...

Blazing fast!

Broadband Reports Speed Test.
The Comcast cable guy just left and things still were slow.

I just ran another test and whoa!

Check out these results:

"2005-08-11 15:31:18 EST: 8074 / 680"

He installed a new modem. Motorola Surfboard SB5120.

That seemed to do the trick, although he did say there were issues in the area of getting high speed access. He told me to watch it until Monday and and if it's still slow, to call in.

Here's hoping it remains fast.
