Boston Before the Storm: CNN iReport Made from Color Video Clips
I'm trying out the new CNN iPhone App that has a CNN iReport News theme included.
As a test, I grabbed three recent clips that I had recorded with the new Color iPhone App, also works on Android.
It's interesting that otherwise random moments from your life can be assembled into a story that can be shared with others.
I'll keep that thought in mind when recording future Color clips.
Clips used:
Walking Jamaica Pond, Uforge Gallery Opening, A sign of Spring - Peeps! at Roche Bros.

The afternoon was easily filled by almost literally bumping into web creators in the street. Robert Scoble was being mobbed by fans when I drew him away to ask how he manages such a high rate of social data all the time. Steve Garfield was between panel sessions when I managed to grab a few minutes with him to talk about user generated content, news and what was in his bag. Thanks Jamilla.

Fleishman-Hillard - along with MITX - is keeping the SXSW spirit alive in Boston.
"Austin 2 Boston: Sharing Learnings from SXSWi," is a happy hour event designed to bring together Boston area social media, marketing and communications pros who were either in Austin for SXSWi or wished they could have gone. Presentations will be fast-moving. A range of high-profile local speakers will be on hand and their 3-4 minute presentations will follow a common format: one mega takeaway from this year's SXSW; 3-4 smaller, but still important takeaways; and best of all, how they plan to integrate these new ideas into their work this year.
The lineup of speakers will include:
Carissa Caramanis O'Brien: Leads Red Box Communications and also a VP at the ProMed Network
Joe Chernov: VP of content marketing for marketing automation SAAS company, Eloqua. Co-chair, Word of Mouth Marketing Association's ethics panel.

6 Easy Ways to Produce Compelling Video (That You Hadn't Thought of Before) #sxsw 2011
6 Easy Ways to Produce Compelling Video
View more presentations from Steve Garfield.
SXSW Interactive 2011 Presentation by Steve Garfield, author of Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business. Garfield's talk, "6 Easy Ways to Produce Compelling Video (That You Hadn't Thought of Before") offers "tips for with capturing moments in real time and sharing them without any editing. Among other things, I show how to record directly to two very well known websites."
SXSW Interactive: It's About Relationships, not Technology - Streaming Media Magazine:
Steve Garfield's "Six Easy Ways to Produce Compelling Video (That You Hadn't Though of Before" was a typically practical Garfield presentation. He showed off exactly what he said he would, including streaming live from a webcam to YouTube or services like Livestream and Ustream. Audience members could be seen having visible "a-ha" moments, and Garfield was busy with questions long after his allotted time.

FAIL: US AIRWAYS Seat Selection User Interface
See where it says SEATS? That's FYI only, you can't choose seats in the pop up window that follows. There's NO indication that it's display only.
Try to click a seat to choose it, no error message. No text explaining that this is a display only screen.
Now that you are on the payment screen, you can click SEATS to choose a seat. Nice RED color choice guys. Maybe you should rethink that and make it GREEN?
After clicking the SEATS button on the Payment Page, this "Initializing Seatmap" animation comes up... and never stops... never displays the seats. All you can do is close and continue without choosing a seat.
After making a reservation without being able to choose a seat, you can go in and edit your existing reservation and add a seat. Here, clicking an available seat places the number 1 in a brown circle. Just like the Legend shows. ;-) Nice color choice too for Save & Close. You might want to rethink that and make it Green.
Setting up a FreeAgent GoFlex Drive on a Mac
I got a Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 1.5 TB USB 3.0 drive from Seagate while at SXSW for evaluation.
The packaged drive comes as Read/Write for a PC and Read Only for a Mac. To use it as Read/Write on a Mac you have to reformat it. The instructions are very clear on the Seagate website.
Here are the formatting instructions:
http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207851
There are also instructions to download a utility to turn off sleep mode. I did that too.
The drive comes with a USB 3.0 ( backwards compatible to 2.0 ) interface.
I also got a FireWire 800 interface. This was very easy to plug in to the drive. It booted with no problem on a MacBook Pro.

Taking the Initiative: Sarah Palin, Brian Solis, and Mark Burnett - A BlogWorld Expo Encounter
I'm not the biggest Sarah Palin fan but I ended up helping to promote her show, Sarah Palin's Alaska on TLC from Mark Burnett, at Blog World Expo 2010.
Brian Solis saw that I was attending the conference, through my tweets, and asked me if I'd help him do an experiment when he did a keynote interview with Mark Burnett on stage. I was happy to help Brian out even after hearing that my participation would end up supporting Sarah Palin.
In a flurry of activity I was brought backstage just before the keynote and given a video to upload to YouTube.
After the video uploaded, it was 2 min. before Brian and Mark would take the stage. I saw that there were TV lights set up, so when Mark Burnett came over to thank me for helping him with his project, I asked him if I could interview him for a moment. He said yes.
I brought them over to the studio lights, asked if we could use them, and turn them on. I had my video camera and was ready to shoot the interview at a moments notice.
We did a quick interview and then off he went onstage.
I only had that one moment, took the initiative, and got a great interview with Mark Burnett.

CNN iReport teams up with iReporters and Vimeo filmmakers at South by Southwest
Here's the CNN press release for the collaborative video project I worked with them on at SXSW:
CNN iReport teams up with Vimeo at South by SouthwestI am so excited to have been part of this project with CNN. For such a long time I've been trying to get news organizations to see the value in working with, as Jay Rosen says, "The people formerly known as the audience."
CNN iReport, CNN’s participatory news community, and online video sharing site Vimeo®, an operating business of IAC [NASDAQ: IACI], have tapped into their extensive online communities to produce creative, personalized reporting of the 2011 South by Southwest (SXSW) Conferences and Festivals.
During the first four days of SXSW, March 11th – 14th, 2011, hand-selected iReporters and Vimeo filmmakers, and CNN and Vimeo staff covered the SXSW Conferences and Festivals from their own unique perspectives, and shared their daily video footage with the iReport editorial team. CNN condensed the collective footage into a compelling visual diary of SXSW to share with global audiences.
“This project demonstrates what news can look like when it is opened up to communities that include some of the most creative, visionary filmmakers in the world, all collaborating to cover an event that is known globally for celebrating tomorrow’s ideas,” said Lila King, participation director for CNN.com.
The collaborative visual diary, available at http://on.cnn.com/gEOkSR, was revealed for the first time at a press event held at the CNN Grill on Monday, March 14, at SXSW. The diary also will air on CNN International during iReport for CNN on Thursday, March 17, at 11:30 p.m. ET, and during the show’s replays this weekend.
Vimeo will also present the filmmakers’ unique visions of SXSW through their own self-produced work on Vimeo.com and Vimeo’s official SXSW Groups Page (www.vimeo.com/sxsw).
“Vimeo is so excited to partner with world news leader CNN on this new initiative designed to present news seen through a wide variety of creative lenses and individual points of view,” said Blake Whitman, Vice President of Creative Development at Vimeo.
Here's the video:
My shots:
This shot features Thomas Edwards @URWingman. I placed my camera on the ping pong table, knowing that this would be a good shot and Thomas' partner wanted to make sure that I would be ok if my camera got destroyed while they were playing. IN fact he said to me, "you can't put that camera on the table." Well, I was already recording and just wanted one shot of the ball going over the net, so I grabbed the ball and tossed it over. Got the shot. ;-)
For this show I was farther away from the window than the shot shows, but zoomed in to get the close shot inside the food truck window. I held the shot until the transaction was completed.
One of the themes of the video was food trucks, When I saw this little girl on the swing in front of the food truck, I knew I wanted to frame the shot with her in it. So I squared off the truck in the background, and then squared off the girl swinging in the foreground, and held the camera steady and let the people walk into the line. Love this shot.
It's so col that all the shooters are credited by NAME in the video, rather than the regular TV way of crediting things, "From YouTube," "From Vimeo," or "Viewer Video."
Thanks CNN.
I'm looking forward to working with you again in the future.
Here's my iReport with containing the Food Truck shots:
