GM provided me with a 2013 Cadillac ATS to test for a week. The car came with a full tank of gas and insurance coverage. I was not asked to write anything about the car in exchange for the opportunity and was not provided any other compensation of any kind. Chair Shopping with my Mom

My mom needed some new chairs for her patio. I saw some chairs advertised at Home Deport for $19.98, so I took her shopping in the 2013 Cadillac ATS that I have for a test drive.

Image: Tan Sling Patio Chair courtesy Home Depot

Mom and Me in the Cadillac ATS

I asked her what she thought of Cadillac.

She remembers when Cadillac was for older rich people. I told here that with this car Cadillac is working to gain a younger buyer.

We also listen to the Frank Sinatra channel, Siriusly Sinatra, on SiriusXM. She loves Sinatra.

Then we went into Home Depot and sat on chairs for a half hour.

Mom trying out chairs.

We chose the ones that were on sale and wheeled them out to the car.

Chair Shopping With Mom: Will it Fit in the Trunk?

Hmm... Would they fit?

Chair Shopping With Mom: The Trunk

I angled them in, to fit like this.

Chair Shopping With Mom: In the Trunk

The Cadillac ATS had built in hooks to help you tie things down in the trunk.

Hooks in the Trunk

But it doesn't have hooks in the trunk lid, so I had to improvise.

Chair Shopping With Mom: In the Trunk

We got them home and they are going to work out well!

After Chair Shopping With Mom: On the Patio

How the TOP of the Facebook Home page should look.

Cadillac ATS is an Awareness Angel, looking after the driver's safety

The safety features on the 2013 Cadillac ATS are impressive, especially to someone who's current car is a 2000 New Beetle.

Safety is fun on the Cadillac ATS, making driving and parking like a game.

Cadillac ATS is an angel. Collision alert system is cool.

Cadillac ATS is an angel. Crash avoidance system is cool. http://disclosur.es/9ROsJA

The Cadillac ATS has sensors that give you both a visual and physical warning if you come too close to something.

In this example I was parking in my garage and the sensor started warning me about the proximity to the front wall.

First YELLOW. Caution.

Then RED when I got very close. When RED, the front seat also vibrated.

Very cool.

This also comes into play when you are driving along a marked roadway and get too close to the center lane. The Cadillac ATS has a lane departure warning system where the left side of the driver's seat rumbles. ;-)

Made me drive too close to the center lane a few too many times.

Cadillac ATS backup camera. Guidelines turn with the steering wheel.

Cadillac ATS backup camera. Guidelines turn w/ wheel. http://disclosur.es/9ROsJA

I've known about backup cameras in cars, but I didn't realize that the grid that's displayed on the screen, varies depending on which way you turn your steering wheel. So if I'm backing out of a space to the left, the grid angles to the left and shows you the expected path.

Very cool.

Like the front collision alert system, the rear camera's grid changes color between yellow and red, then pops up a '!' warning when you are close to the car behind you.

I used this today to back into a spot, and had to get out of the car to confirm what I was seeing on the screen.

It's accurate and I love it. Now I need a front camera too. ;-)

When I do reviews, I like to use the products in everyday use, and take and share some photos about my experiences.

My wive and I took the Cadillac ATS for a drive and stopped off at Dunkin Donuts to grab a couple of coffees. Two Medium Dunkin Donuts coffees don't fit int o the drink holders at the same time.

Some of my friends think that this is a deal killer. ;-)

Comments on social media about this were not that positive...

Introducing the Steve Garfield Forum, powered by Moot!

All Posts | Stevegarfield forums

Welcome to the Steve Garfield forums!

Remember the early days of the web where you had to use a modem to dial up to a single line BBS? How exciting it was to find others to talk with online? I do. I created one of the first single line BBS's for Macintosh users called Mac Boston. I ran it on an IBM PC XT (Ironic) in the basement of Northeast Computer Stores in Boston. It became very popular with people dialing in from all over the world.

Remember when multiple line BBS's came out, and you could interact with others at the same time? I do. You might have seen me in Jason Scott's 'BBS Documentary' talking about it.

Remember when commercial sites came out like Prodigy, Compuserve, and Byte? I dod. I became a moderator on Byte for the Macintosh forum. Their software came out of the University of Guelph, and was the best I've ever seen for using threaded comments and promoting discussions. I met Jerry Pournelle on there.

Here, you can ask questions, help others or share your thoughts.

Let's see if we can have fun.

Come chat at the Steve Garfield forums! ;-)

Kid President meets the President of the United States of America

Disclosing that a Cadillac ATS is here for my week long test drive

I've always hated the car buying experience.

PRICING
That's why I was happy when cost plus buying opportunities arose and you didn't have to negotiate.

TEST DRIVES
You can do all the research online that you want, but an extended test drive is the only way to truly figure out if a car is right for you. Car dealers will offer you a test drive, but other than those test drives you see on funny TV commercials that last for days, a regular test drive isn't enough.

RENTAL CARS
Recently I've relied on rental cars for my extended test drives.

My most recent rental was a Mercedes C250.

Information

I liked it.

Then I saw the Mercedes CLA.

Casey Neistat is producing a nice movie project for The Mercedes CLA.

In his first video, Casey talkes about his history with cars.

MY HISTORY WITH CARS
The first car I drove around a lot was my dad's Pontiac Tempest. It was hte four door version of the Pontiac GTO.

Pontiac GTO

I loved that car. It had a V8 engine and was a lot of fun to drive. I had a sweet deal. I'd drive my dad to work, then have the car for the day, then pick him up when he was done with work.

This was the first car that I owned. A Ford Torino. I bough it off a used car lot with low miles.

My First Car: Ford Torino

The problem was, it didn't really have low miles and the engine needed to be replaced. The dealer did that for me. Then it had problems starting. Overall, it had a lot of problems.

I got rid of that and then bought a Toyota Celica. Lots of people at work had the same car, so I bought one too. The salesman took me on a test drive like that current viral YouTube video. Although in my test drive, he drove me around like he was racing. Turns out he was a New England racing champion. ;-)

My Second Car: Toyota Celica

This car was awesome. Wish they made something like this today. It was a sporty hatchback.

My current car is a 2000 New Beetle, that isn't so new any more. In fact, at over 12 years, it's the longest that I've ever owned a car.

Cell Phone Waiting Lot

This brings me to the Cadillac ATS.

The wasn't even on my radar until I went to #SXSW this year and met some representatives from GM at the All Hat party.

With @mayhematusios Calvin Lee at #Allhat
Image: With @mayhematusios Calvin Lee (Not a GM rep) at #Allhat

They sponsored the party, but did it in a great way. No overt sales pitches. So I thanked them for that and we got to talking about cars, and I told them about my driving history and how I was considering a Mercedes CLA.

They offered to get me a Cadillac ATS for a week to try out. No strings attached. They just want to see what I think about it.

Cadillac ATS Arrives
Cadillac ATS is here for my test drive. http://disclosur.es/9ROsJA

The Cadillac ATS arrived today. I'm looking forward to trying it out.

DISCLOSURE
I'm very interested in the social media space and the efforts that the FTC is making to help guide bloggers in how to best disclose any commercial involvement, when they share content on social media sites.

I'm so interested in it, that I have invested and am advising a company that it trying to help make things a lot easier, cmp.ly.

So I'm going to be using the cmp.ly tools when posting about the Cadillac ATS to test them out too.

I've set up a campaign at cmp.ly and this URL points readers to my disclosure: http://disclosur.es/9ROsJA.

Jimmy Fallon Named the Next Host of the Tonight Show, Cheers!

I'm very excited that my friend Jimmy Fallon has been named the next host of the Tonight Show.

Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Closing Credits: Jimmy Fallon runs into the audience and finds me. ;-)

Jay Leno-Jimmy Fallon ‘Tonight Show’ Handoff Set for Post-Olympics:
NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke has calmed the waters in NBC latenight, brokering a deal for Jimmy Fallon to take the reins of “The Tonight Show” from Jay Leno following NBC’s coverage of the 2014 winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.

The specific timing of Fallon’s ascent was still unclear, but sources said he would take over on the heels of the Olympics coverage, which runs Feb. 7-23. A source said he’d be behind the “Tonight” desk by early March at the latest.

Jimmy was excited too:

I really appreciate the tweet from the Producer of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, my friend, Gavin Purcell:

I replied:

Then watched the show, where The Roots opened with the Tonight Show Theme:

Cheers!

Twitter Media Grid: A place for all your Vines, and Videos, and Photos

Jut saw this from my friend CC Chapman:

Update:
After I posted this, I started looking around to see if there was a new Twitter menu to get to this Media Grid. Yup. It's there on the left side bar on the Twitter profile page.

It's a link called See all photos and videos. It's been there for a while. I've never used it. ;-)

Steve Garfield (stevegarfield) on Twitter: View all photos nd videos

Here's my Media Grid:

Steve Garfield (stevegarfield) on Twitter https:__twitter.com_stevegarfield_media_grid

This is cool, and needed.

I have a place for my photos: Flickr.

I have a place for my Videos: YouTube.

A PLACE FOR VINE VIDEOS
But I don't have a place for my Vine videos. Since twitter rolled out Vine, I've been able to share Vine videos, but have only been able to share them one at a time, by tweeting them, posting to Facebook, or embedding them.

Then, the only way to find one of your Vine videos, on the web, was to search back through one of those places to find it.

TWITTER VINE EMBED
Before Media Grid I would have had to search my twitter stream to find this Vine from Easter:

NEW VINE DIRECT EMBED
Now I can use Media Grid to find a recent Vine and embed it with the new Vine embed code:

Earlier: Now you can Embed Vines

NICE START, NEEDS FILTERS
The Media Grid is a nice start for having a page that I can point people to.

It just needs to have a filter for types of content, so a visiter can select: All Photos, All Videos, or Vine Videos.

What do you think?

Boston Globe Newspaper Readers Might Miss Some of the Best Mixed-media Investigative Journalism from the Spotlight Investigation into Taxis

My friend Clarence Smith, Jr. tweeted out that he thought the Boston Globe was doing "some of the best mixed-media investigative journalism we have seen":

I read that tweet and didn't understand what he was talking about. I'm a Boston Globe subscriber and had been reading the Spotlight report: Driven to the Edge, but was not aware of any mixed-media.

I grabbed the newspaper out of the trash to take a closer look.

Here's how it looks in the newspaper:

Boston Globe Spotlight: Driven to the Edge - Apr 2, 2013, 2-40 PM
Image: Boston Globe Spotlight: Driven to the Edge - Apr 2, 2013, 2-40 PM

Oh.

There it is. In text. Over there on the right. See it?

Online Boston Globe

Seriously?

I missed it.

This is what the #FAIL hashtag was created for.

Following the link brings you to this page:

Metro - The Boston Globe

Obviously has video on it.

And the little INTERACTIVE GRAPHIC image on the left brings you to a pretty cool page too.

The PRINT EDITION needs to do a better job of highlighting multi-media that's online.

I've written about this before:

QR Code Example for Boston Globe Articles

Here's a QR Code for this series online:

Try it. Maybe that would help?

Using some GRAPHICS might also help readers know there are videos and interactive charts online.
