Spring Awakening at the Colonial Theatre

Sexy time at the Colonial Theatre!

We saw Spring Awakening at the Colonial Theatre last night.

Lead actress Christy Altomare, as Wendla, was amazing. I also enjoyed the music, co-written by Duncan Sheik.

One thing that was confusing was that the parts of the parents and the teachers are all played by the same actors.

The play is a lot like RENT. Many adult situations were presented as these young adults deal with growing up at a time where they were still treated as children.

Jenna Scherer has a nice review in the Herald. She writes:
When they’re not being featured, cast members sit among the two-sided onstage audience or jam with the band upstage. Bill T. Jones’ expressive, energetic choreography evokes a very primal teenage frustration.

And then there’s Christine Jones’ set - a brick-wall blooming with neon lights and bizarre objets d’art. Kevin Adams’ lighting is almost a living creature, with candy-colored spotlights and hanging lanterns.
The lighting was very well done.
