Bald Guy on Climate Change 016

Bald Guy met Steve Garfield at the NH Mediamakers meetup. Time to make a video blog entry! In the car Steve talks about how climate change and the new media landscape fit together. Over a bridge to somewhere.

Send It To Them

I took a tour this morning of some of the major media websites to see how they are set up to accept photos and videos.

Channel 7 and Boston.com use email, WBZ and Channel 5 use a form. NECN's feedback page won't load. The Herald has a contact us page.

It's a sad state of affairs. BostonNOW was doing it right. They embraced the reader as a contributor to the site for any and all topics. In this brief survey, the media outlets are asking for specific content like foliage photos or red sox photos. WBZ and 7 seem to have to most open submission policy.

Who's going to step up to embrace reader and viewer content?

What did I miss?

WHDH
Send It To 7

Email: senditto7@whdh.com
Subject: Fall Foliage Photos

Their slideshow is embeded in the page and doesn't require a page refresh, nice. Links to photographers would be nice.

They also have a general Send It To 7 page with this:
Send us photographs and video!

WHDH-TV is looking for your photos and video of news events. To tell your story through pictures -- moving and still -- that you've shot, just email your media to SENDITTO7@WHDH.com. Please include captions and information about the videos and photos you send, along with your name and telephone number. You can also use your camera phone to send us photos and video while you're on the road.

I sent this in to 7:
New Hampshire Foliage

This isn't working well:

Here's the email I got back from my submission:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.

Delivery to the following recipients failed.

Final-Recipient: rfc822;mbaldacci@whdh.com
Action: failed
Status: 5.1.6
X-Display-Name: Marlena Baldacci
I went to the Send It to 7 webpage to send in a message to tell them that the email address is broken. I submitted the form and was sent to a page that said:
Not Implemented
D'oh!

There are problems here and I usually get paid for advising companies on user interface issues. I give up.

I'm back. I didn't give up. I tried again to contact WHDH.

Here's the new error I get:

If any readers have a contact at WHDH, please inform them that their submission email is broken.

Boston.com
RAW: Hit Us With Your Best Shots

E-mail yours to raw@boston.com.

The RAW blog is doing a great job of highlighting viewer photographs. They just introduces a nice slideshow player that doesn't require a page refresh for each photo. Thank you. They could improve by linking back to the photographers websites or providing contact information.

Boston.com also has a contact page. It's not really geared to accepting submissions.

I sent this in to RAW:

New Hampshire Foliage

WCVB: The Boston Channel
Show Your Red Sox Spirit!

Limited to Red Sox ony?

Slideshow also does not require a page refresh. Nice. Link to photographer's would be nice if available.

Is there any other user content on the site besides fan Red Sox photos?

Here's their contact page. I don't see any specific method for sending in media.

WBZTV.com
WBZ News Tips

Found on the right hand side of the home page:

Uses a form to enter contact info and to send media:

Send WBZ your:
Breaking News Tips
Video
Photos

Here's the WBZ disclaimer you need to agreet to when sending in a photo:
Disclaimer:

By sending us your picture, you agree to the following:

You represent that you own all copyrights in the photograph.

You acknowledge that CBS may, at its sole discretion, publish or otherwise use any photograph submitted by you. Such publication or other use may occur on television, in books, in newspapers and magazines, on the Internet, and/or in or on any other medium of communication now or hereafter devised, and may be for advertising, promotion, the use of trade, and/or other commercial purposes. By submitting a photograph, you (and any other individual depicted in a photograph) consent to such publication or any other use.

As a condition of submitting your photograph, you (and any other individual depicted in a photograph) unconditionally and irrevocably waive all claims to compensation for use of the photograph, and/or any rights with respect to such use you may have under copyright law, the right to publicity, the right to privacy, the law of defamation, and any other common law or statutory claims under the laws of any jurisdiction.

You represent that you have been given the authority by each individual depicted in a photograph to bind such individual to these release terms.

You must be 18 years of age or older to submit a photo.
It'd be nice it they allowed for sharing revenue if hte photo is really, really good.

WBZ also features viewer photos, but in a slide show that requires a page refresh each time.

I sent in this one:

New Hampshire Foliage

Oops! Sent the same one to two stations.

Doesn't matter since the Channel 7 submission failed. (see above)

Here's the response I got back form BZ:
Thank you for your submission to wbztv.com. We will review and follow up with you as necessary.

The way this should actually work is that I should be able to TAG my photos on Flickr and a way that allows their use... So for example, I could tag the photo, WBZ or NECN, and they could view the photos. That makes it a lot easier for me.

An angry mob is not attractive

Panic attacks: Voters unload at GOP rallies - Jonathan Martin - Politico.com:
"John Weaver, McCain’s former top strategist, said top Republicans have a responsibility to temper this behavior.

“People need to understand, for moral reasons and the protection of our civil society, the differences with Sen. Obama are ideological, based on clear differences on policy and a lack of experience compared to Sen. McCain,” Weaver said. “And from a purely practical political vantage point, please find me a swing voter, an undecided independent, or a torn female voter that finds an angry mob mentality attractive.""

Whoever wins this election is our leader

Obama Movie Poster by Zoltron

This is Right:

Dave Winer: Will this election end in a civil war?:
"I'm going to add my voice, as humble and unpowerful as it is, to the growing chorus asking the Republicans to take a step back, and think longer term, bigger picture. This is not going to end well if we can't agree that whoever wins this election is our leader for the next four years, at a time when we desperately need leadership. There's an awful spirit to this competition that says when it's over we will not unite, and that would be a disaster.

McCain must give a speech, like the one given by Obama when racial issues came to the front earlier this year, and say clearly that no matter who wins, we must unite behind the new President. "
Frank Schaeffer: McCain's attacks fuel dangerous hatred:
John McCain: If your campaign does not stop equating Sen. Barack Obama with terrorism, questioning his patriotism and portraying Mr. Obama as "not one of us," I accuse you of deliberately feeding the most unhinged elements of our society the red meat of hate, and therefore of potentially instigating violence.
Right.

This is wrong:

Jay Severin: Start Stopping Obama Now!:
What’s your job, what can you do? Join me! Start the 2012 campaign right now. If we can’t impeach Obama then let’s throw him out at the earliest possible moment and that means start stopping Obama now. An attack campaign against Obama is worthy of the timeless principals of all American patriots. Obama is King George and we are the minutemen, and women. The United States of America will be saved only by us, and only by us opposing Obama and everything he represents. That is our duty.
Wrong.

Michelle Obama at Larry King

Michelle Obama on Larry King Live

Note: Video temporarily removed because of CNN video player issues. They are working on it.

After watching Larry King interview Michelle Obama on CNN.com last night, I looked for a video online to share.

The only thing on CNN.com were three clips:
Not offended by 'that one'
Michelle Obama says she was not offended by John McCain's "that one" comment during the debate.

Hillary Clinton 'phenomenal'
Michelle Obama says Hillary Clinton has been "phenomenal" in helping campaign for Barack Obama.

Michelle: Judge Barack on actions
Michelle says she's too busy to be affected by the negativity of the campaign.
This morning I'm happy to see the interview has been posted to CNN.com.

Hello CNN.

Thanks for posting.

Comcast TiVo Alien Autopsy - Recording Schedule

Now that my TiVo is brand new again, I need to set up my season passes.

Terminator, Heroes, Making the Band, America's Next Top Model, Grey's Anatomy, The Office...

I'm sure there are more that I'll remember as the Fall season starts up again.

What are your favorite shows?

Comcast TiVo Alien Autopsy - Lost Shows

My TiVo was swapped out today. The initial sympton was that the GUIDE was not being populated with data. It now seems that this is a more widespread problem and the Comcast Guy tells me that they are workign on it. At the same time, the TiVo Guys want to do an autopsy in my specific unit. So my existing TiVo was removed with all the unwatched shows on it.

Goodbye:

Making the Band, Mad Men, That Masterpiece Contemporary show where London turns into a police state, Heroes, Terminator and Monk. I'll be able to catch some of these on Hulu and other on repeat.

477

Just got this from the Obama campaign Action Wire:

John McCain was at it again today, releasing yet another ad full of lies about Barack Obama and taxes.

The McCain campaign is using a manipulative, dishonest method to calculate how many times Barack has voted to raise taxes, and they came up with the number 94 -- completely unsupported by any independent analysis of the record.

So we turned it around and used the McCain campaign's bogus counting method on his record. And guess what?

Using his own standards, John McCain has voted 477 times to raise taxes!

Our team put together a fun video to help you and your friends see just how desperate John McCain looks when he runs the same tired attacks Republicans have used for years.

Check out the video and share it with your friends.

http://my.barackobama.com/447taxincreases

A report out today shows that McCain has almost completely stopped running positive ads and is focusing virtually his entire advertising budget on attacking Barack.

More of these attacks will come, but with your help we can make sure they don't gain traction.

Keep fighting the good fight,

Obama Action Wire

WBZ-TV Embraces Local Blogger

I had a great lunch with Stephanie Miller, Director of Digital Media at WBZ-TV and WSBK aka TV 38. We talked about a how local media can embrace local bloggers.

I came away from the meeting excited about some initiatives that Stephanie is working on.

Watch for more embracing of local bloggers in the future.

Stephanie told me to check out the WBZ Declare Your Curiosity blog. She says it's like the old Ask The Manager Show on TV 38.

I took a quick look. Fun.

I just got the new Nokia N96, from the Nokia Bloggers Program, for evaluation.

This camera is a lot faster at taking a photo than the earlier N95. It also gets ready to take the next picture a lot quicker. The on camera display screen is really big and bright.

I'll be arrying this camera around for some more photo testing.

Reuters: Apple says report of Jobs heart attack "not true"
Friday October 3, 10:14 am ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - An Internet report claiming that Apple Inc chief executive Steve Jobs has had a heart attack is not true, the company said on Friday.
Responding to a report in "iReport", a citizen journalist web site owned and operated by Time Warner Inc's CNN, Apple spokesman Steve Dowling told Reuters by email: "It is not true."

The report claimed Jobs was rushed to the emergency room after suffering "a major heart attack."

Boston.com has Comments

Oh happy day.

Boston.com now suports comments on articles.

I made my first comment on this article:

Rivals shine, Palin a bit more brightly - The Boston Globe.

My Comment:
I'm glad to see that I can comment on this article. Shocked actually.

In your article you say this about Biden, "At one point, he rerrered to "Bosniacs."

That sentence is no longer online.

If you remove something that was originally in the article, and people have comented on the part you removed, their comments no longer make sense.

You need to note somewhere that you changed the article.

You can either cross out the section you removed, or remove it and note what you did.

Thanks!

Q: How will you fix the economy?

A: Our economy and putting it back on the world. I'm not one of those who were predator lenders also. That's, you know, the molecules, where it's going and where it's going and where it's going to be able to use them. So we have been blunders along the way, though. There have been blunders along the way, though. There have been put in where it is the foundation of national security. It's that significant. I have both been discussing whether that is part of the U.S. domestic supply of energy, that I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do this with you.
