Craving a new set of filters

John Pareles writes in the NY Times, 2006, Brought to You by You.
In utopian terms the great abundance of self-expression puts an end to the old, supposedly wrongheaded gatekeeping mechanisms: hit-driven recording companies, hidebound movie studios, timid broadcast radio stations, trend-seeking media coverage. But toss out those old obstacles to creativity and, lo and behold, people begin to crave a new set of filters.
Check out my filter for internet video, Vlog Soup.

Cigarettes can explode Gas Stations

Peter DeMarco writes a good follow up, to my post about that guy who was smoking and talking on his cell phone while his car was idling at a gas station, in his The Boston Globe story, Sparks can fly at the pump:
"As you would expect, smoking cigarettes at a gas station is a major safety hazard and is totally illegal (Code of Massachusetts Regulations, Chapter 527 ). Filling your tank while your engine's running? Also illegal."
It IS up to the attendant to stop people from smoking and idling their cars. They are supposed to shut off the pump.

Jeff Pulver wants me to share five things

Jeff Pulver just found out about Blog-Tag: A Game for a Virtual Cocktail Party:
"Turns out there is a game of Blog-Tag going around the blogosphere in which bloggers are sharing five things about themselves that relatively few people know, and then tagging five other bloggers to be 'it.'"
I think this is a fun game since a lot of times I'm usually writing here about pop culture, video blogging trends and Boston area news.

[Five things about Steve that relatively few people know:]

1. I was an on-air auctioneer at the WGBH Boston auction for 10 years.
2. I was a joke writer for Jay Leno for three years.
3. I've done stand up comedy at the Comedy Connection, and The Comedy Studio.
4. I've had consulting, sales and marketing positions in the computer industry.
5. Consuming media other than on the internet: TV - The Office, Heroes, Radio - Matty in the Morning, Toucher and Rich.

Note: You can watch Heroes on line too.

Now it's my turn to tag!

Capturing Deval Patrick

Capturing Deval Patrick by stevegarfield, uploaded from flickr.
Here's a still frame from the end of Deval Patrick's Rally for Change speech on Boston Common. You can see me up there on the bandstand capturing video of the moment.

To me, this is one of the things that videoblogging is all about. Capturing and sharing fleeting moments.

Chris Brogan wrote about it, Deval Patrick and his Just Words Speech.

During the Deval Patrick campaign, I had a choice, Donate Money or Make a Video.

I chose to make a video.

Afterwards, I heard from a number of people that this Just Words video helped them make their decision to vote for Deval.

That means a lot to me. It encourages me to go out and do more.

Participative Storytelling Via Video

Participative Storytelling Via Video: GooTube Conspiracy:
"That’s the spirit behind The GooTubeConspiracy. The storyline is dictated by the viewers. Toss a good comment or video response and you’ll see the story take a new direction."
Kevin Nalty is experimenting with participative storytelling via video. He's using YouTube. With video comments, it makes it easier to join in and follow. He's also using a Revver collection to group videos together.

This idea is also being explored at lonelygirl15.com and Node 666.

With more streamlined ways to participate in stories like this, I think we'll see a lot more of it in 2007.

Thanks Steve for telling me what's going on at lonelygirl15.

Millie Garfield: Changing the World

Elisa Camahort writes about my mom in ChangeThis :: Women Bloggers: Changing Their Worlds, Changing the World:Happy the Mac is back
Changing the way we age
Millie Garfield may not be the world’s oldest blogger, but at age 81 she’s likely close to it. Millie has discovered an entirely new world full of friends from all over the world and ideas from all over the map. We’ve probably all seen older relatives whose worlds seem to grow smaller as they age. Their friends die or move away; their family may shrink; their physical health may prevent them from getting out and about like they did. Physical and emotional isolation are detrimental to to anyone’s health, let alone those whose condition may already be vulnerable. Blogging represents a way to expand our world and to stay connected to it. It also provides an opportunity to continue to exercise the brain ... reading, writing, debating, formulating ideas, imagining how various experiences can contribute to tomorrow’s blog post! Blogging and active participation in the blog community has the potential to change the way we age, providing unprecedented mental stimulation and emotional fulfillment. Millie doesn’t have the time to wonder whether blogging “keeps her young” ... it keeps her too busy.

Questions for 61 Web Video Hosts

This Web Video Cheat Sheet lists 61 places that you can host your video.

Other things to consider that are not on this list:

Real People
1. Can you talk to real people about problems?
2. If you can talk to real people about problems, how long does it take to get them resolved?
3. Can you talk to real people about new feature suggestions?

Integration
4. Does the site integrate with blogging sites? How? Automatic posting? Copy and Paste code?

Transcoding
5. Does the site transcode to Flash? If so, which version, 7, 8, 9?
6. Can you choose a preferred display format? Ex: Flash, Windows, QuickTime?

Thumbnails
7. Thumbnails. Can you choose a thumbnail? Can you upload a thumbnail?

Links Back
8. Does the site allow you to link to the permalink of your blog post? To your site?
9. Does the site allow you to add additional text and links to provide additional information.

Legal terms
10. Are you giving the site exclusive rights to your video, non-exclusive rights? Do you still own your video? Can you post your video to your blog? Will you pay their lawyers fees if someone gets sued? Do you need a lawyer to explain the terms to you?

Statistics
11. Does the site keep track of how many views your videos get? How long are the statistics stored? Are there track backs so you can see where people are coming from?

Community
12. Does the site allow for comments? Video comments? Can you subscribe to a video producer?

RSS 2.0 with Enclosures
13. Does the site support RSS 2.0 with enclosures to allow people to subscribe with their own aggregator?

Closed vs. Open
14. Does the site require you to download their own proprietary player? Do you have to visit the site to view videos? Are there open API's to allow access to the videos?

HD
15. Does the site support HD videos? How do they do that? BitTorrent? Peer to Peer? Proprietary?

Speed
16. I've got a need for speed. Do the videos from the site start playing right away, or is there a lag time which forces you to press pause, go away and do somethingk else, then press play later on?

Archives
17. Can you browse through a creator's videos? Blogging is not the best platform for allowing people to browse through past videos. I know, I've got videos going back to 2004. How do I find them now? Google. Better ways are beginning to emerge. Check out Brightcove for example.
