New Media Tools

New Media Tools, originally uploaded by stevegarfield. CC BY-NC-SA

I presented New Media Tools at Jeff Pulver's Social Media Jungle in Waltham, MA.

Jeff has links to some people who blogged about it on his post, Recap - Social Media Jungle: Boston - from the people who where there.

I covered three things, Photo, Audio and Video.

PHOTO
For the photo experiment, I asked the people formerly known as the audience, how many had cameras. Most did. Then I asked how many had cameras that could post to the web. Those that had connected cameras then took a photo of a selection of new media tools I brought to the meeting.

Established media outlets need to embrace readers and viewers and solicit them for content. We have the technology.

Note: Click on any of the images to see who took them and where they posted them. The majority were sent to twitpic. Flickr supports adding a license to your photo, so on the flickr photos, I've included that license below the photo. Twitpic should include that. It would be nice if Facebook provided embed codes so you could easily share photos outside of Facebook on places like blogs. They need to support Creative Commons licensing too.

One of the flickr iPhone uploading tools that looks cool is Flickit. RWW has a review of Flickit here.

What tools do you use to send photos to the web?

Next, I used Utterli to dial a phone number and interview Matthew Ebel. Here's the interview and photo.

After the interview, I took a photo and emailed it in to Utterli.

Utterli then attached the photo to the audio and posted to my blog.

This isn't that interview, but it's a photo Doug Haslam shot and uploaded to Utterli.

VIDEO
Finally I showed how you can use Qik and a cellphone to stream live video to the web.

Since the video was under 10 minutes, Qik also automatically uplaoded it to YouTube.

Declare Your Curiosity: Lisa Hughes and Steve Garfield

I'm a big fan of WBZ TV's outreach program called Declare Your Curiosity. That's why they had me come in and record this promo with Lisa Hughes. It was a lot of fun.

You send in your questions to http://wbztv.com/curious, and those that are selected can get on TV. Even more than that, the WBZ TV news teams researches your questions and finds out the answer. It's like having your own personal investigative news team. In one case the reporter asked the interview subject the exact questions that a viewer sent in.

I like seeing tv stations reach out to people formerly known as hte audience.

Get Off the Bus: The future of pro-am journalism by Amanda Michel

Nokia N800 Delivers the News

Get Off the Bus:
"The integration of strands of the pro-am strategy into the journalism mainstream will be bumpy. It will require, among other things, a shift in journalism’s traditional ethical matrix. Transparency and disclosure, rather than neutrality—often tainted if not patently false—must become critical fourth-estate virtues. The pros must commit to figuring out how to harness, cooperate with, and assimilate citizen journalists into the future of their craft. In other words, more professional journalists should take their offline skills—such as interviewing sources—online, and learn to build and manage networks of sources to produce accurate information."
ProPublica Adds Amanda Michel to Its Newsroom
ProPublica today announced that former HuffPost’s OffTheBus Director Amanda Michel will join its investigative newsroom. Michel will become ProPublica’s Editor of Distributed Reporting.
Congratulations Amanda!

Massachusetts Attorney General's Office is on Twitter, Sending out Email Replies

The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office is on Twitter.

They'll make posts, but they won't respond via twitter as a matter of policy.

Web Communications Policies - Twitter:
"The AGO’s use of Twitter is intended as one-way communication with any who elect to watch or follow our Twitter feed."
I posted:
@MassAGO Welcome to twitter. Can we get an update on the Massachusets Wine Bill?
They replied via email:
Please see our policies regarding the Mass AGO’s use of Twitter.

Specifically, “The AGO will not respond via Twitter to press inquiries, consumer complaints, or other constituent matters. For instructions on appropriate methods for contacting the Office, please visit the Contact Us page of the AGO website”

So if you have questions on policy or the like, please feel free to send an e-mail or contact the press office.

Thanks for following us on Twitter.
So I emailed in my question:
Hi,
What's the status of the Wine Bill?
--Steve
http://stevegarfield.com
They responded via email:
Dear Mr. Garfield,

Thank you for contacting the office of Attorney General Martha Coakley relative to the appeal by the Massachusetts Alcohol Beverage Control Commission. By statute, the role of the Attorney General’s Government Bureau is to represent state agencies—in this case the Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission (ABCC)—and to defend a statute that was passed by the Legislature. When a statue that has passed and is presumed to be constitutional is overturned by a single District Court judge, it is customary that the Attorney General’s Office bring an appeal so that a panel of federal Appeals Court judges may fully vet the analysis of that single lower judge. Such review would include a legal analysis of the admissibility of the evidence at hand and the reasoning upon which the single judge based his or her decision. While we respect Judge Zobel’s decision, we feel that it is in the best interest of the Commonwealth to have a full judicial review on this matter.

We always appreciate the effort that residents take to let us know their positions on issues like that and thank you for taking the time to contact our office.

Sincerely,
Community Information and Education Division
Crazy.

Review: Late Night with Jimmy Fallon Premiere and Social Media

I stayed up late last night to watch Jimmy Fallon's first Late Night with Jimmy Fallon show.

I stayed up late because I felt that I was part of the show, more than any other TV show that has ever premiered. That's because Fallon has embraced social media, and the audience, even before the first show aired.

With the help of coproducer Gavin Purcell, Fallon has learned about social media tools like Twitter, Twitpic and videoblogging, and has used them to an extent that is far more personal than even Barack Obama and Brtiney Spears.

"Barack Obama, I've met Jimmy Fallon, and you're no Jimmy Fallon."

From the start, Fallon's Late Night with Jimmy Fallon vieoblog was authentic and personal. A perfect example of how to reach out and start a conversation on the web. Fallon produced one video a day from the beginning of the videoblog up until his premiere last night.

The videoblog was interactive. I posted a text comment, and Fallon called me out in his first video answering commnets.

I sent in a video, and Fallon called me out as "our old pal Steve Garfield" in his first video answering video comments.

It was exciting.

Then Fallon embraced twitter, and actually used it, even learning how to use twitpic to send in photos from his iPhone. Really groundbreaking stuff from someone about to have a nightly TV talk show.

When Fallon and I met at CES in Las Vegas, he felt like he knew me, and I felt like I knew him. That's what can happen when you reach out and embrace social media, especialy video on the web.

Fallon went from having no followers on twitter, to having 182,641.

We are engaged.

The show was recorded in the afternoon, 5:30 PM EST, and we saw a few tweets about it.

One from @gavinpurcell:
First show tonight! An early sneak peak posted on the blog: De Niro & Jimmy do live comedy in Space Train: http://tinyurl.com/av6ebq
Share photos on twitter with Twitpic

One from Fallon using twitpic:
Show taping!! http://twitpic.com/1t5aq

When the show started on the East Coast I jumped on search.twitter.com to participate in a live chat during the show.

It was fun to stay up late and watch live TV like that and participate in the chat. I even watched the commercials. Usually I fast forward past them with my Comcast/TiVo.

I even tweeted about them.
Going to look up some travel with Expedia.com. Covergirl Rihanna! Looks good. ;-) Going to buy Zantac + a Mercedes Benz. #LNWJF
There were a lot of people chatting. We talked about the show intro, the monologue, The Roots, DeNiro, The Space Train Video, Justin Timberlake, Lick it for $10, and Van Morrison.

Twitter really makes it easy for people to sit around and watch TV together. The CNN/Facebook integration during the inaugural was another live event were we all watched together.

Best moments of the show:
The Intro, The Roots, the monologue, Slow Jammin the News, and Fallon and Timberlake singing together.

I really like The Roots. They are amazing. Slow Jammin the News is a great collaboration between The Roots and Fallon, a real highlight.

What I would like to see on future shows:

1. I'd like to see Fallon and the staff live tweeting during the broadcast. What were they doing last night? Partying? We missed you.

2. Open up the MacBook that's on your desk. It's sad to see it closed like that. Send out some tweets during the breaks and talk to us during the taping.

3. Make a category on the video blog where we can quickly see any videos from you. allow us to subscribe to them. You're adding a lot of new content to the blog, but we want to be able to know when YOU make a video, and don't want those posts to get lost among all the new posts.

I'm looking forward to seeing more interactivity with the audience. I know you guys are working on it. Can't wait to see my video submissions on the show, to shoot some behind the scenes video, and attend a taping in NYC.

I'm excited about the future of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Social Media and network TV is happening.

Looking for a stainless refrigerator bottom freezer, counter depth

Looking for a stainless refrigerator bottom freezer, counter depth. 70" X 32" X 25" ( H x W x D ) or less. The web is not making this easy. The counter is 25" deep.

Our current refrigerator is 28" deep, 30" with door handle, so we'd consider this depth too.

I'd like a bottom freezer swing out door with shelves, instead of a drawer with pull out baskets.

The majority of time we use the refrigerator section, so the freezer on the bottom is better.

I don't want French doors either. Sorry @loic and @vinvin. I did buy a 2005 Burgundy yesterday!

Please leave a comment if you can suggest one.

Thanks!

Boston.com: Ready For Spring

Nice video by Jason Tuohey. Too bad there doesn't seem to be any place to post a comment.

It would also be nice if a thumbnail image was displayed instead of black.

Boston.com Brings Back Fun Web Header

I just noticed that Boston.com made a cute little snow cartoon out of the Boston.com logo on the top of their page.

Have they been doing this recently? They used to do it all the time when the website first started.

Good for them!

Reporting snow depth on NECN Live using a cellphone via Qik via Mogulus

Here's a recording of going live on NECN via Qik via Mogulus.

This is a recording of Ted McEnroe of NECN tossing to me Live in Boston on my Nokia N95 via Qik via Mogulus for a report on snowfall accumulations. This was broadcast live on cable TV.

I had my yardstick ready.

It all worked. You could even hear my audio.

Here's the Qik version.

Watch the behind the scenes.

This is very cool. You can see me getting ready to go live on New England Cable News via Qik via Mogulus. Watch the recording of what went on TV. Thanks to Carol for being my camera person and director. Excellent job.

As you can see in the video, the delay wasn't five minutes like I said, but it turned out to be a very slight delay.

Qik version

I'm very excited to show that we have the technology in place for citizen reporters to do live shots via the web to TV. It's only going to get better.

Storm Central Coverage from NECN and NECN.com featuring Live video on Mogulus and ME from my Live streaming Nokia N95 with Qik at 9:40

Streaming live all day from the NECN Weather Center - at times, Matt will be interactive with you. During live programming, you’ll see what he’s doing behind the scenes, on the air, and when time allows, interactivity.

We are going to attempt a live shot from my Nokia N95 at 9:40 from my Nokia N95 via Qik and Mogulus to NECN cable with Ted McEnroe!
