Pats WR Wes Welker draws huge crowd in Bellingham as he pitches energy bar
The energy bars, meanwhile, are the brainchild of Jason Winn, who attended Texas Tech with Welker.

”I started eating them,’ Welker said. ”He’d send them to me all the time, and so finally, I invested in them, and became an owner myself.”

Naturally, his teammates love to stop by his locker and grab a few bars, especially Rob Gronkowski.

”He loves them, he’s always stealing them from my locker,” Welker said of Gronk.

WBZ TV: Don't Declare Your Curiosity

Lisa Hughes and Steve Garfield
Image: Lisa Hughes (On TV) and Steve Garfield (Not on TV)

WBZ-TV newscast set gets $750,000 facelift:
Change is also happening off camera. The station has downplayed its light-hearted social media franchises such as “Conversation Nation’’ and “Declare Your Curiosity’’ - which asked viewers for story tips - in favor of more hard news and investigative reports that its parent CBS news division is known for.
Find the station at CBS Boston WBZ.

WBZ had a good thing going with “Conversation Nation’’ and “Declare Your Curiosity’’ but they didn't take it far enough. I had fun going in an making a promo encouraging people to engage with the station.

Fun huh?

In 2012 I'd love to be able to work with a local media outlet and be on TV.

Boston Globe: Supermarkets shrink to fit city spaces. Whole Foods in Jamaica Plain.

Whole Foods Jamaica Plain Sign

Nice article by Kathleen Pierce, in today's Boston Globe, about the new Whole Foods in Jamaica Plain: Supermarkets shrink to fit city spaces
Whole Foods in Jamaica Plain is latest to try a smaller space:
"Steve Garfield, who lives a 20-minute walk from the Whole Foods in Jamaica Plain, said the store has changed the way he shops. He now stops in every other day for fresh food to prepare for his family that night.

“This is exactly what they do in France,’’ he said.

But there are a few things his Whole Foods doesn’t have.

“We miss fresh bread,’’ said Garfield, referring to the lack of an on-site bakery. Another thing he misses: the Whole Foods cafe, where the self-employed Internet start-up consultant sometimes popped open his laptop to work.

But the urban edition offers something its suburban counterparts, such as the 63,080-square-foot emporium in Dedham’s Legacy Place, can’t.

“I bump into my neighbors all the time,’’ Garfield said. “It’s a nice little community place.’’"

Flour Bakery Gingerbread Molasses Cookies: Baking is Science!

Iamage: Gingerbread Molasses Cookies

We made these Gingerbread Molasses Cookies from this cookbook:

Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston's Flour Bakery + Cafe (affiliate link).

They came out SO good.

We went into this thinking that we wanted a SOFT gingerbread cookie. When you make gingerbread men cookies, sometimes they cone out too hard.

So for the first batch we followed the directions exactly.

Joanne Chang describes baking as a science and I've heard that before from Christopher Kimball of America's Test Kitchen.

As a former programmer, I love following recipes. Why anyone would say, I can't cook, or I don't cook, I don't get it. Is that you? Whay do you say that?

So back to the recipe. at the end of the recipe you make the dough into balls and coat them with sugar and place them on the baking pan. I had no idea what would happen, but the dough melted down into nice, plump, soft inside gingerbread cookies.

SO GOOD!

Really, just click the link below and buy the cookbook. It's the best ever.

Flour: Spectacular Recipes from Boston's Flour Bakery + Cafe

You can get a sneak peak at the recipe here:

Also, while you are at it, buy yourself a KitchenAid mixer. Makes things a lot easier.

The Kodak PlaySport (Zx5) is one of the best choices for a pocket HD video camera that anyone can use to make great HD video. It's waterproof, dustproof and dropproof. Perfect for dropping in a bag and taking on vacation. It has a glare resistant screen which actually allows you to see the screen in bright sunlight, online some other pocket HD video cams. Works great with iMovie and Final Cut X.

Verizon to pay $800,000 in billing dispute

Phone company says cities, towns were overcharged because of software

"The overbilling occurred in 2006, after inaccurate information was programmed into newly installed billing software, according to a statement issued by Verizon."

It's human error. The 'software' doesn't make the error, a human does.

Having newspaper headline writers write captions for stories about software is like having politicians write legislation about the internet. #SOPA

[Video] Mega Upload Song

Mega Upload Song - Note: Click once to see an ad, then click the play button again to watch the music video.

The Verge: Tech News Today episode censored by Universal:
A clip from Tech News Today episode 391 featuring the MegaUpload "Mega Song" video, which caused Universal to have the entire episode pulled from YouTube.
Megaupload: Join the fight against censorship:
...On December 9, 2011, we re-launched our website, featuring endorsements by top celebrities including P Diddy, Will.i.am, Kanye West and Chris Brown. The campaign includes a promotional song and video containing snippets from those celebrities called the Mega Song. The video became an instant viral online sensation. Within hours, it was the top trending topic on Twitter, and global news media reported about and linked to the video utilizing Youtube's embedded video player.

To our surprise, Universal Music Group (UMG) sabotaged our campaign by deleting Mega's creation from Youtube, abusing the DMCA takedown process and unlawfully claiming ownership of the Mega Song. UMG is currently lobbying lawmakers in Washington for legislation that would allow them to not only delete specific content from a website, but to delete entire websites from the Internet. After this demonstration of the abuse of power by UMG, we are certain that such an instrument of Internet censorship should not be put into the hands of corporations.

Let us be clear: Nothing in our song or the video belongs to Universal Music Group. We have signed agreements with all artists endorsing Megaupload. Efforts to reach out to UMG and open a dialogue about this abuse of the DMCA process were answered with unfounded and baseless legal threats and demands for an apology.
Hollywood Reporter: Dispute Over Megaupload's Viral Music Video Takes Another Odd Twist:
Megaupload also has something to say about the takedown notice by Will.I.Am.
According to Kim Dotcom's declaration, he says he spoke to the superstar on Monday, and Will.I.Am "personally advised me that he absolutely had not authorized the submission of any takedown notice on his behalf."
NY Times: File-Sharing Company Sues Record Label, for a Change:
Megaupload, a service for sharing large media files over the Internet that has often run afoul of Hollywood and the music industry, is suing the Universal Music Group for blocking a promotional video from being played on YouTube.

Steve Garfield's Keepsy Instagram Photo Book

I'm on a Keepsy kick today. After documenting my experience with Keepsy in making my 2012 Instagram Calendar, I saw that Keepsy also lets you make a book out of your photos.

I saw this over on the Keepsy site where they were highlighting various instagram photographers and their photo books.

So I played around with the Keepsy photo book interface and ended up buying one.

Photos on Canvas by EasyCanvasPrints.com

Getting a photo made into a canvas print has gotten very easy. I've gotten one before, taking my photo on a USB drive down to Costco. They did a nice job, although the colors didn't match exactly.

Now EasyCanvasPrints.com gave me a credit for an 8 x 10 canvas print, so I decided to give them a try.

Here's the photo I decided to turn into a canvas print.

Jamaica Plain Lantern Festival

Ordering a print from EasyCanvasPrints.com takes four steps.

Here are the steps:

Step 1 - Order:

When you order you can choose the size and Canvas Wrap Thickness.

Step 2 - Upload:

You can upload an image from your computer, or choose one from one of your Facebook albums. The system will lt you know f the image is a good enough quality for printing to canvas.

Step 3 - Border:

Next you choose if you want it to hang on the wall or have a desk stand. Then you choose a border. I chose to have the image wrap around the edge. The website is very cool in that is shows you exactly how your print and border is going to turn out. I really liked this feature. I played with trying out a mirror image, but for this photo it looked too crazy.

For my previous Costco print, I chose a black border.

Step 4 - Finishing:

Finally, you choose the finishing. I didn't choose to change the color to B&W or Sepia. You can also pay for image retouching. I chose not to.

Here's the final canvas:

Canvas Prints: Front

Here's what it looks like from the back:

Canvas Prints: Back

Here's a detailed view:

Canvas Prints: Detail

I contacted EasyCanvasPrints.com to comment on the line I could see that matches the edge of the frame. They are looking into it for me and I'll update this post when I hear back.

Update:

I got a reply from the Easy Canvas Prints Customer Love Team:
Typically this crease comes from shipping, if something heavy was resting on the box and caused the canvas to push down around that frame more. I went ahead and submitted that request for a reprint, which typically only takes a few days to produce.

We'll email you the UPS tracking for this reprint as soon as it ships out next week. One trick to try and salvage the existing canvas, is to run a damp/wet, warm wash cloth over the back of the canvas. The warmth will help to release the crease and once the canvas dries it will usually tighten back up. This is also a good trick to use in case your canvas ever becomes stretch by something in the future, they're more resilient than they look!
Thanks!

Overall I think they did a nice job. I think the colors could have been a little more vibrant.

I liked the finish on the Costco canvas a little more. It was a little more shiny. Not a big deal.

Disclosure:
EasyCanvasPrints.com gave me a credit for an 8 x 10 canvas print in return for this review and a link to: Photos on Canvas.

Update:
Got a replacement canvas and it's perfect.
