Here's a cat photo for you while I fly home on my favorite airline in the world, JetBlue.
Last night while waiting in the ..long.. line at the Blogger party, Amber MacArthur from TV and web fame came by with her crew.
We had a great time chatting. I updated them on everything in the world that had changed while they were on their plane, including hte big news that Microsoft's amazing new video website, on10.net, was showing QuickTime movies as hte default format!
Once inside I got my free Blogger beer, but alas, no more winter caps. :-(
I made introductions all around. The vlogger crew here included Joshua Kinberg, my SXSW event buddy, and Scholmo, my SXSW photo subject, and Richard Show.
Schlomo has a lot of amazing stories about the film industry.

The Audience is right
I met Chris Hyams of Bside today. He's got an online community devoted to film fans.
It turns out that I used software from his former company, Trilogy, back when I was working for a computer distributor.
If his Bside community is half as good as Trilogy was, this is going to be a really cool platform for filmgoers and filmmakers.

Very cool.
They have an online video editor that you can use to edit your uploaded videos clips.
I think Jay Dedman has been waiting for an online editing tool like this for two years.
Looks promising.

SXSWi 2006 Report

SXSWi is a lot of fun. I'm meeting a lot of interesting people and taking names (collecting cards).
Jim Coudal and Jason Fried's opening remarks about the death of the RFP and functional spec were right on target for me and brought back memories on working on things like that. They also talked about chosing to do business with people who are nice. That's my program!
Eric Rice is actually flying around SXSW in physical space. He just aquired a record label.
I also saw Eugene Mirman. He's here to promote a little film and will be doing a show, The Comedian's of Comedy. Go see him!
Heath Rowe and Danah Boyd we amazing panel discussion leaders.
Drinks last night at Club Deville with Andrew Baron, Amanda Congdon, Joshua Kinberg, Richard Show and others was fun. Thanks Andrew for the beer. Andrew says that he can buy a group pf people beer down here for the price of one beer in NYC. I didn't see Chuck since I turned in before he ventured out. Today! I will see Chuck today!
Today I'm going to the Elderbloggers session at 10:00 to see Ronni Bennett and participate in the discussion. Gonna represent my mom and my future state of elderblogging. Lisa Williams plans on being there too.
At 2:00 it's the keynote with Heather Armstrong and Jason Kottke.
4:00 Bloggers in Love, going to represent The Carol and Steve Show. I heard we were nominated for the panel but didn't get selected.
It's revenge of the Blogs at 5:00, about what might happen in the 2008 elections. I can already tell you, video blogging candidates. See John Edwards.
Then later on it looks like the Yahoo! party and Eric Rice's Fray Cafe at the Red Eye Fly, 715b Red River. That looks like it's going to be the Videoblogger's meeting place.
I talked to Mason Dixon about it as well as Michael Verdi. At the Fray Cafe you get up on stage and tell personal stories for 5 minutes. Videobloggers should be good at that.

How To Add a CNAME at Network Solutions
Over at SmugMug they have a pretty good page explaining Configuring Network Solutions to use your custom hostname.
What's confusing is the Host Aliases: CNAME RECORDS dialog box.

I'm going to figure this out today, but to me it looks like I have to key in www in the Alias field and then my new URL in the Other Host field to get a CNAME record that includes the WWW.

Then I have to add a second recod with "@" in the Alias field and then my new URL in the Other Host field to get a CNAME record that does not include the WWW.
Is that how you do it over there?
I just looked at my notes from the last time I had to change the CNAME record, and back then I ended up switching the DNS and had BlogHarbor take care of it.

SXSW Music Fest kickoff party
JD writes about the SXSW Music Fest kickoff party:
"If you'll be at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, next week, for either the Interactive Festival or the Music Festival (or, heck, the Film Festival), stop on by the IODA (Independent Online Distribution Alliance) Kickoff Party on Wednesday, March 15, from 1-6 pm to hear some great indie bands (I'll be interviewing several of them for a podcast) and to see some cool video mash-ups that I'm helping to coordinate with a team of terrific videobloggers."I made a cool mash-up for the band, The Herms. We used the drag and drop interface of SpinXpress to send the music and video files around, without using a central host.
I could definitely see how using SpinXpress amongst a few editors to collaborate on a music video could work although we didn't do that this time.
I'll be at SXSW on the 11/12/13th, so I won't be able to make it to the Music Fest kickoff party, but if you're there, check out my video and if you like Rock-and-Roll, go see Waltham.

Boston Media Makers Meeting Report 3/5/06.
Mingling took place both in the main part of Sweet Finnish and the meeting room.
Introductions and Show and Tell
We started of the meeting by going around the table to have everyone introduce themselves and talk about what they were working on.
Ravi started us off my talking about his DriveTime project. After about 10 minutes, we decided it was time to move on the next person. Not that Ravi wasn't entertaining and informative, he is, but we needed to move along.
Holland introduced himself and after the meeting he added to the discussion we had on narcissism with a new post over on the Boston Media Makers Forum, Mythography: Echo and Narcissus in Greek Mythology
Amy talked about the S.S.D.S., and Carl and his wife talked about their plans for the future. Carl is going to vloggercon.
DC Dennison introduced himself and the Pulse Point project he manages for the Boston Globe.
We continued with David Tames, who had a Show and Tell about getting better sound.

After David, Mike showed some videos from his and Serra's Headsoff vlog. Very interesting.
Then Serra presented her Emerson College project, Video String. Lots of people were interested, especially Ravi who is now going to present Serra's project to his Northeastern class.
Nathan showed us his website which Steve anointed a vlog, Hooray For Funn. ;-) It now has a reverse chronological listing of video posts, where each post has a permalink. Congratulations Nathan.
Annaliese told us where she was working.
Randy talked about his projects with Lowell TV and Outlet, and John, for the day, talked about promoting local bands.

Arin Crumley and Susan Buice were the main feature of the day and gave an entertaining presentation about their film project, Four Eyed Monsters, and how they use the video podcast and MySpace as more than just a promotional tool. They talked about how they used to send miniDV tapes back and forth to each other with messages. This was before online vlogging became popular. Those tapes were woven into the film, Four Eyed Monsters.
David Tames and Randy shot video of their presentation. When it goes online, I'll point to it.
I shot a little too and it'll be up soon.

You can't delete the Mobile Web option from your Verizon Wireless account online.
I just tried it and there is no selection box on the self service online form.
You can't delete the Mobile Web from your Verizon Wireless account via their automated customer support phone line. It only gives you the option to add Mobile Web. I just tried it.
You can't delete the Mobile Web from your Verizon Wireless account by calling customer service and talking then on the phone when their system is down. I just tried it.
They told me to try to do it online. I told them that I couldn't do it online. (see above)
I then explained that I couldn't do it via the automated phone support line. They said they knew that already.
They told me to call back again.
A company with good customer service would have agreed to remove Mobile Web from my phone as soon as their systems came back online and send me a confirmation via email, phone or regular mail.
I put the monkey on their back and they promptly took the monkey and put it right on my back.
I don't want a monkey on my back.

My friend Deirdre got a Sonnet iPod Replacement Battery and it worked.

Ask Jerry
My friend Jerry now has an Ask Jerry feature at It's JerryTime!

I have a 64 oz. bottle of Ocean Spray Light Cran-Rasberry drink.
On the front of the bottle it says, "Cranberry Rasberry Juice Drink Blended with another juice from concentrate.
When I look at the ingredients it says:
Filtered Water, Grape Juice from Concentrate, Cranberry Juice (Cranberry Juice from Concentrate and (Cranberry Juice), Rasberry Juice from concentrate...
So why isn't this bottle labeled GRAPE JUICE? Don't they list ingredients from most to least?
I know why they don't label it GRAPE JUICE or even mention GRAPE JUICE on the front of the bottle.
No one likes grape juice.
And one other thing, recently the juice seems less red in color. Have you noticed this?

Networked Digital Storytelling
Kristoffer Gansing is teaching a course called Networked Digital Storytelling at the University of Malmoe in Sweden. He writes:

Earlier today I made a post, The Oyster Opens, which points to an online article where I was misquoted. Since then I've had an email exchange with the reporter. I'm trying to get her to change the quote.
She won't.

Please read the comments on this post. I was wrong about the "place something in quotes" comment. The part where the reporter incorrectly wrote what I said wasn't in quotes.

Hi Amanda,When you place something in quotes it's supposed to be a verbatim record of what was said and not a 'paraphrase.'
Your story is online, can't you change it to reflect what I really mean?
It's not like it's printed out and there's no way to change it.
If the city does this there is no reason to believe that we'll all pay. It's very possible that they will have a FREE tier, and then a paid tier for faster access.
