We had a great interview with Andia Winslow on SteveGarfield.tv.

A few cool notes:

1. Andia video Skype'd in on an iPhone!

2. Andia records her YouTube fitness videos with a regular sized iPod touch or point and shoot digicam supported by a broom held up by a water jug. So cool.

My First Storify Story
My First Storify Story

I used Storify to make my first storify story. This story combines twitter, flickr photos and text, with links back to each original source. YOu can also include source material from facebook and blogs.

Storify is a very easy use platform, that brings together posts from around the web, to tell a story.

Here's my post on Storify:

SelfControl for Internet Addiction

Nice article in the Boston Globe today about ways to control internet addiction, but they don't provide a hyperlink out to the program mentioned in the article, SelfControl, an OS X App.

Tangled in an endless web of distractions:
It was supposed to be a quick diversion, Katie Inman told herself last week as she flipped open her laptop. She had two tests to study for, three problem sets due, a paper to revise. But within minutes, the MIT sophomore was drawn into the depths of the Internet, her work shunted aside.

“I had just closed Facebook, but then I reopened it. It’s horrible,’’ said Inman, a mechanical engineering major. “I would type a sentence for my paper, and then get back on Facebook.’’

Desperate for productivity, Inman did something many of her classmates at one of the most wired campuses would find unfathomable: She installed a program that blocks certain websites for up to 24 hours. No social networking. No e-mail. No aimless surfing...

As for Inman, she has developed a new routine to keep from succumbing to the lure of the Internet. Around 9:30 each evening as she settles down to study, she sets the self-control application on her laptop for two hours. She is blocked from Facebook, Twitter, and other websites she does not want to be tempted by.

And there is nothing she can do to disable it once it is set.
There's a sidebar that describes the program, SelfControl, but no link.
SelfControl:
Blocks access on Mac computers to e-mail and websites such as Facebook or others of your choice for a set period of time of up to 24 hours. Once enabled, the app cannot be turned off.
Here's the link again:

SelfControl OS X App as seen in Boston Globe - Blocks access to #email #Facebook #twitter for a set period of time.

U Scape It - Best Example: Stop and Shop 360 Panorama Created from Video

I'm testing out the new free iPhone app, UScapeit.

UScapeit lets you take a video and then transforms it into a 360 degree view.

Here's the best: Stop and Shop 360 UScapeit Panorama

This app is different from the 360 Panorama App I've been using in that it uses video to capture the image, instead of a combined mosaic of photos.

My first few attempts didn't turn out so well.

Jamaica Pond
JP Licks

It's because I was spinning the camera around too fast. You've got to take 30-40 seconds to shoot your video of the scene. Also, you need to keep the phone on the same vertical axis as you shoot.

I asked them about this and UScape.it replied:
Regarding the “slow” question: the app is pulling individual frames from the video to build the panorama. Our eyes fool us with video because a group of frames look fine and clear—but when you isolate out individual frames, those frames are blurry. If you were to time your captures on 360 and other panorama apps, you’ll most likely find that those captures take even longer than the 30 seconds that we recommend for UScapeit captures.
I think the quality is very good. I'll be doing more testing.

When I arrived at HubSpot for the shoot with David Wells, he had three cameras ready to go. The problem was that they were all lined up beside each other getting a slightly different three-shot of the interview area.

David was happy to get some help, so I moved the cameras around to get him three different shots.

I set up two medium shots of each guest, and a wide shot including both the guest and interviewer.

Now there was a lot more interest in the shots.

Interviewer shot:
InboundNow David Wells

Guest Shot:
InboundNow Steve Garfield

On the above two shots, I framed each person in the same way. Also, instead of centering them in the shot, I placed the interviewer to the right and the guest to the left, so that it looks like the interviewer and guest are talking to each other.

Two Shot:

The two shot gives the viewer perspective of where the interviewer and guest are sitting.

Music Video Challenge: ‘Hello, Future’ using new music from Moby

As part of The 21st Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity 2011 (19 – 25 June), Saatchi & Saatchi partners with Vimeo and Moby to discover fresh filmmaking talent.

Moby, along with Saatchi & Saatchi, and international video sharing community Vimeo, is throwing down the gauntlet to the next generation of young filmmakers with a unique Music Video Challenge based on the theme of this year’s New Directors’ Showcase - ‘Hello, Future’.

So here’s the brief: Visualise the concept of ’Hello, Future’ in the form of a standout music video inspired by one of three tracks selected from Moby’s new album, ‘Destroyed’. The winner will be announced at this year’s Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase in Cannes on 23rd June, as well as on the Vimeo website. Not only will the winning Film Director have their film shown in front of more than 2,500 delegates at the ever popular New Directors’ Showcase, in the Grand Audi of the Palais, their promo will be introduced by Moby in a live video link, and they will be offered the chance to work on a project in a key office in the Saatchi & Saatchi Global Network.
For entry guidelines and information on how to submit videos to the competition go to: vimeo.com/saatchiandsaatchi.

This is a great way to get filmmakers involved AND to get lots of people to hear Moby's new music.

The Video Blogging Interview with Steve Garfield

I was interviewed by a university student majoring in Communications who is fascinated by Video Blogging.

Here are her questions and my answers:

Video / My First Videoblog post: January 1st 2004. It's the year of the video blog.

1. Why did you decided to start Video Blogging?

I started video blogging as a technical exercise. There were lots of blogs around, but no blogs with video so I decided to see if I could figure out how to do it.

Link: First Video Blog Post: 2004: The Year of the Video Blog

1a. What made you do it?

I like to make a New Year's resolution each year, so this was my four 2004.

1b. Why did you decided to start the The Carol and Steve Show?

The Carol and Steve Show was another New Year's resolution. I wanted to get into the regular habit of making videos and figured filming what my wife and I did on the weekends would be good fun, would get her involved in creating videos with me, and share moments of my life with online friends.

2. How did you initially become involved or interested in video blogging? What has kept you involved for so long?

Like I said earlier, it was just a technical exercise to see if I could figure out how to do it. But, once I got involved they were always new things to try, new things to learn, and I was happy to share that knowledge on my blog.

What's kept me involved so long is the satisfaction I get from helping people.

3. What made you start video blogging protest rallies, traffic short-cuts... (citizen journalism)?

Steve and Amanda
Steve and Amanda in NYC

I've always been very interested in how news is produced. The New York City video blog Rocketboom, asked me to become a correspondent for them. That's what I started doing a lot more videos.

Link: Steve Garfield's Rocketboom Reports.

Video blogging is a lot like blogging. It's people sharing knowledge. So I like to record events and things that I learn about and share them with video.

4. Has been a significant person (or persons) in your life that have influenced or stimulated your thinking and attitudes about your work?

Kathy Griffin at Eagle 93.7
With Kathy Griffin at Eagle 93.7

When I was a producer on a Boston morning radio show, Kevin Karlson was my mentor. He insisted that all the audio edits I produced were perfect, I love that work environment trying to make the perfect edit.

That audio editing experience related to video editing.

4a. How did they influence your work?

I also learned how to tell us story in a short period of time, and how to craft a story.

5. Where do the ideas for your work generally come from?

I get ideas for videos from news and events around me.

6. Has there been a particular project or event that has significantly influenced the direction of your career? if so, could you talk a little about it?

For a period of time I was an independent consultant, doing programming and web user interface. While doing that, I took classes to learn how to edit with Final Cut Pro. Prior to that I worked in public access video for number of years. When the Macintosh laptop came out with Final Cut Pro, along with a consumer video camera, I could bring the whole production studio into my own home. Then, when a long-term programming contract ended, I decided to pursue video production full-time.

7. When you started, did you saw video blogging as a career, or just as an expression?

Vlog Soup 21 from 1/5/07

I've always looked at video blogging as a way to express myself. It's a way to practice with new software and hardware, and learn new techniques. The career comes from the visibility that video blogging gives me. Video blogging has led to consulting contracts with major companies, a book deal, and appearances on many broadcast outlets.

8. Why did you decided to write books on Video Blogging?

David Meerman Scott approached me one day and asked me if I'd ever thought about writing a book. I told him that I hadn't. And he asked me if I wanted to write one, so I agreed. Writing the book, Get Seen: Online Video Secrets to Building Your Business (New Rules Social Media Series), was a lot of fun and I'm enjoying all the positive feedback that I'm getting from it.

Live Web Shows: Experimenting With Interaction by Kara Matuszewski, CBSBoston.com:
It looks like a television studio. There are lights, cameras, a desk for the anchor. There’s even a countdown clock to breaks. But rather than watching this show on television, viewers tune in on their computers.

Steve Garfield, a consultant, author, former community television host and more, has been hosting his show stevegarfield.tv from The Pulse Network’s studio in Canton since September 2010. He says he likes that he’s able to immediately interact with his audience.
Thanks for the great story!

Update 4/15:

David Pogue - The Tragic Death of the Flip:
The Flip was a great product. Much simpler than a camcorder—the thing pretty much had only one button, Record/Stop—and also much simpler than an app phone. You’d have this thing filming instantly: no powering up, loading with tape, opening the screen, setting to Record mode, and so on. Then you’d pop out the built-in USB connector to transfer the footage to your Mac or PC: no hunting for a cable, setting to PC mode, and all that. Built-in software let you chop off the bad parts and post to YouTube with a couple of clicks.

Because it was so quick and simple, you’d wind up catching moments you’d have lost with any other gadget. I’ve got all these great videos of my toddler son in the back seat of the car, because he’d suddenly start singing a hilarious made-up song, and I’d grab the Flip from the center console, hit the button, and I’d have it. I would not have had a prayer of getting those songs if I’d had an app phone.
Exactly.

And then there's this, Live Broadcasting:
But there’s a second part of the tragedy, too, something that nobody knows. That new Flip that the product manager showed me was astonishing. It was called FlipLive, and it added one powerful new feature to the standard Flip: live broadcasting to the Internet.

That is, when you’re in a Wi-Fi hot spot, the entire world can see what you’re filming. You can post a link to Twitter or Facebook, or send an e-mail link to friends. Anyone who clicks the link can see what you’re seeing, in real time—thousands of people at once.
Wow.

If you've got a smartphone and want to try live broadcasting over WiFi OR 3G, check out Qik
