Boston Web Innovators Group

Boston Web Innovators Group - Originally uploaded on flickr by stevegarfield.
Last night I went to a meeting in Boston, It was a good time to try out the N95 in a low light situation. The photos are much better than the N93.

It takes quite a while for the camera to display the image after taking the picture, but I'm sure that's just because this is a preproduction model. It seems that I have some focus issues too, but that might be because I put my subjects over on the side of the frame. The focus area is pretty big. I'll have to play around some more with this. If it's like any other camera, I'm sure I just have to focus on the subject and then move the camera to the side.

On thing I can tell you is that the N95 will make you very popular at parties. The meeting I was at was all about new software solutions in technology. One attendee told me that seeing the N95 was the highlight of his evening. It's a fun phone to show people.

At dinner after the meeting we were talking about Imogen Heap and my friend hadn't heard of her, so I took out the N95 and played him one of her songs. I just set the phone down on the table and let the music play out of the stereo speakers. People liked it.

New Vlog Soup

Vlog Soup: Vlog Soup: Episode 23:
"This week on Vlog Soup we show what Madison Ave portrays vloggers as, meet the artist Charles Beck, learn about preserving 8mm and Super 8mm movies, meet Josh Shipp who has advice for teenagers, Ben Blaser who shows us how to turn our videos into cartoons, and share an intimate moment with vlogger Josh Leo. Enjoy.

Roadrunner has an ad that represents videobloggers as crazy people jumping up and down. We are more than that, as Chris Pirillo demonstrates. Thanks Chris for helping to keep everything in perspective. "
Check it.

Interview with blip.tv's Mike Hudack

Interview with Mike Hudack from blip.tv by Ajit Anthony of DV Guru:
"As a videoblogger, I had initially hosted all my content on my own web server. I did this so because I could control how the content was viewed, build an audience around my site and keep the rights to the content. But with the diverging media platforms, the task quickly became a nuisance. Some people didn't have Quicktime, iTunes didn't like Flash, then there is the Windows Media Center. Yikes! After a while, I decided to share the hosting responsibilities with blip.tv.

It was a pretty easy decision to choose blip.tv. You uploaded one file and it did the rest. The Blip Flash conversion was as good as Sorenson's awesome Flash conversion. They offered Windows Media Center compatibility. Like Revver, they offered ads but with added options. They offered raw statistics. Upcoming features promised even more flexibility and power. For a filmmaker or videoblogger, there is not a better hosting site than blip.tv. "
Great interview and a great story.

If you aren't hosting yor videos on blip.tv, you should be.

WGBH Morning Stories Videoblog

WGBH Morning Stories Video Available:
"Meet Tony Kahn, the voice of the Morning Stories podcast, in a series of behind-the-scenes and off-the-cuff videos. The videos range from a mash-up produced by video blogger Steve Garfield, to advice on how to choose podcasts, which side of a CD is “up,” some behind-the-scenes tips on the use of hat mics, and a video viewers are encouraged to incorporate into their own pieces.

New videos are being posted each week through February 16th at http://www.youtube.com/user/morningstories."

How to: Fix the Nav bar in New Blogger

I upgraded to the New Blogger and a navigation bar appeared at the top.

Back when there was a Pro Blogger account I was the first to sign up and pay for it. That made the navigation bar go away.

For now, I've added this code to the body item in my template to make the navigation bar stop from overlapping over my header graphic.

margin-top:30px !important;

I found this solution over on the Blogger Help Group at Google Groups.

Another thing, when I use Blog This!, the resulting blog entry makes the TITLE of the post a link to the URL of the page I'm blogging. That's not right. How do I make that not happen?

I captured this on the Nokia N95 tonight at a party and uploaded it directly to VOX via the phone.

Here it is on VOX:

What happened is that posting the picture to VOX reduced it's size, so I just replaced the VOX photo that I had cross posted here with the photo from the N95, and now you can see the original version when you click on All Sizes.

How to get an A in college without going to class

Jeff Jarvis reports, BuzzMachine: Davos 07 Media notes:
"Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, told what he called a random story — it’s a perfect tale for the medium and the age — about empowering collaboration. His sophomore year at Harvard, while starting his company, he failed to study at all for one of his courses; he didn’t even go to class. So days before the final, he pulled all the pictures he needed to analyze off the web and put them up on a page online with boxes underneath. He emailed the class and said he’d put up a study guide. Sure enough, in moments, the students filled in their essential knowledge on the art. Zuckerberg got an A. And the prof told him that the grades in the class improved 10 percent over previous years.

It’s a magnificent lesson in everybody winning with cooperation: exactly the lesson big media must learn."

The Mitt Romney Deception

Activist rains on Romney's parade - The Boston Globe:
"It was 4 a.m. Brian Camenker , 53, a computer programmer, sat at his kitchen table in Newton, hunched over his Toshiba laptop. Strewn around him were papers detailing former governor Mitt Romney's alleged ties to gay youth conferences, gay judges, and abortion rights activists.

The documents, mostly printouts of news stories, represented weeks of work by Camenker and a few volunteers who had searched the Internet for material to disprove Romney's assertions that he is a conservative. Now, the results glowed on the screen in front of him, compiled into a 10,000-word dossier, 'The Mitt Romney Deception.'"

Sam Allis writes in today's Boston Globe, On the wild side, an article about Rick Berlin:
"Jamaicaplainspoken.com, the website he and Todd Drogy, a fellow musician and a waiter at Zon's, another estimable JP eatery, have created to showcase the astonishing array of characters who live in the 'hood. We're talking 43 video interviews of folks in JP, with more coming, along with a documentary down the road."

They're not putting a huge stable of crappy re-runs online that youve already seen on TV a million times. They're not inundating their network with thousands of videos of people playing guitars or candid little vignettes of guys getting kicked in the nuts (although that stuff is pretty funny). No one has ever seen this before - it's an Internet-launched network with professionally produced shows. It's the future of video.

Samantha & Bianca at Harvard

Samantha & Bianca drop some science on us by RubyJi, uploaded from flickr.
Samantha Velez and Bianca Ramos talked about what it's like for them as sixteen year olds in High School having to work 35 hours a week and go to school where half their class has already dropped out of school.

I was very impressed with these two young women and I'm glad they came to Harvard to speak at the Berkman/Sunlight meeting on Political Information in an Internet era.

in the midst of seeing all the new and exciting web and wiki initiatives, hearing from them about what needs to be done at a local. gave us a much needed perspective.

I see there is a snowball microphone there and hope that the recording of their talk gets posted to the net for a greater audience to hear.

I hope they get to go to SXSW.

"At dinner last night with Zephyr Teachout and Steve Garfield (lucky me!), at the kick-off of a Sunlight -Berkman conference (tag: berkmansunlight), we had an idea.

The next time there's a national speech or a press conference, instead of waiting for the opposition party to nominate a single person to issue a response, let's vblog citizen responses. If we tag our responses 'citizenresponse' and perhaps use a second tag indicating what we're reacting to (or maybe just the date will do), we'll all be able to find them. "

1. Can you make the record greeting button change into a stop recording button so that you don't have to look down after starting the recording? Please do this.

2. When looking at the widget, how do you know that there are other videos available for viewing other than pressing the right hand fast forward button to check?

3. Do you send email notifications that new flicks are awaiting approval?

No to Iraq War Escalation

This is the most important moment to speak out on Iraq since the war began. Last night, President Bush proposed an escalation in Iraq. If we act today, we can make sure Congress stops this plan in its tracks.

There's an Emergency Rally to Stop Escalation in Iraq today at 4:00 PM in Boston.

Here are the details:

Emergency Rally to Stop Escalation in Iraq
Where: BOSTON COMMON - Park St. & Tremont St. (in Boston)
When: Thursday, Jan 11 2007, 4:00 PM
RSVP: Click to RSVP

If this event doesn't work for you, click this link to search events in hundreds of other locations around the country.

Tonight, the media will be out watching and reporting on our rallies and that means we really need to turn out in big numbers. This is our chance to show without a doubt that Americans want a responsible exit from Iraq—not an escalation.

They Lost the Moon Landing Tapes

Here's a story some of us were talking about recently where the government lost the moon landing tapes.

Buzz on the Footpad

Wired 15.01: One Giant Screwup for Mankind:
"THERE ARE 4 MILLION musty boxes at the Washington National Records Center, a squat brick building in Suitland, Maryland, that's been housing inactive federal records since 1967. The boxes are stacked on gray girders that rise about 20 feet and would cover the equivalent of 14 football fields of cold concrete bunkers. 'We have income tax records, passport applications, patent records, trademark records,' says Alan Kramer, division director at the center. 'And we have records from NASA, too.'

The building grows more crowded every day. In 1950, the federal records totaled 45,000 cubic feet. Today they cover 25 million, and bureaucrats add more than 500,000 cubic feet every year. Digital migration was supposed to lighten the load. It hasn't. 'People don't trust computers, so they print out everything,' Kramer says."
Sounds like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Say It To CBS

YouTube and CBS: If You Had 15 Seconds:
"If you had 15 seconds to tell the world whatever you want to, what would you say? Well, now's your chance to be seen and heard on national television, courtesy of CBS Interactive. Post your 15-second video on YouTube, and CBS Interactive will select one to be broadcast on TV! The first selection will air on Sunday, February 4, 2007. "
Yay CBS.

This is a step in the right direction. CBS is now asking people to submit videos to YouTube.

CBS is following the path that Jeff Jarvis suggested, and that I prototyped with SayItToKatie.com.

I personally explained how user submitted content should work in a discussion with management at CBS. I looks like they were listening.

CBS has a 15 Seconds page over on CBS.com where you can read the rules and follow a link to watch the recently submitted videos over on YouTube.

This is a smart move by CBS since they don't have to screen any videos, and all the submissions can be seen on YouTube. The only videos they have to get a release waiver for are those that they choose to put on CBS TV.

Congratulations.

Now I need something to say. ;-)

The iPhone for Elders?

Apple's New Calling: The iPhone:
"Cell phones do all kinds of stuff—calling, text messaging, Web browsing, contact management, music playback, photos and video—but they do it very badly, by forcing you to press lots of tiny buttons, navigate diverse heterogeneous interfaces and squint at a tiny screen. 'Everybody hates their phone,' Jobs says, 'and that's not a good thing. And there's an opportunity there.' To Jobs's perfectionist eyes, phones are broken. Jobs likes things that are broken. It means he can make something that isn't and sell it to you for a premium price."
