Inventing Citizen Journalism

Ethan Zuckerman writes about his time at the Berkman center yesterday in, Happy Birthday, Ben!:
"...I find my time in Cambridge endlessly fascinating. I was thinking about Ben [ Franklin ] as I watched Steve Garfield interview Dan Bricklin. Bricklin was the co-inventor of Visicalc, the first spreadsheet application, a piece of software which brought about business computing as we know it. His newest invention is wikiCalc, a wiki spreadsheet. Documents created with wikiCalc look like formatted spreadsheets, but are editable like wiki pages...

Armed with a video camera and a mic emblasoned with the logo of video blog Rocketboom, Steve Garfield followed Bricklin through a demo, contextualizing the significance of a wiki spreadsheet for his video podcast audience. I realized that I was watching Garfield help invent citizen video journalism while Bricklin invents wiki spreadsheets."
Video coming soon...This video captures the moment.

Sam Adams Brewpub: Pinebank

On January 10th a public meeting was held to report on the future of the Pinebank Mansion on Jamaica Pond.

It now sounds like the remaining structure will be dismantled.

A Vision for the Future
That opens the door for the local Boston Beer Company, brewers of Samuel Adams Beer, to step in and build a new pondside structure at the top of the hill. Let's have Harpoon Brewery chip in too. Don't worry, there'll be wine too.

For food, let's have local restaurants participate.

By this summer, we'll be heading over to Jamaica Pond on a warm summer day to sit outside and enjoy a cold, fresh Sam Adams beer with a Cuban Sandwich provided by El Oriental de Cuba.

There will be an outdoor performance space, and live music will be playing, with an art exhibition space nearby, run by James Hull of the Green Street Gallery.

Glove Drop

While at Snowmass in Aspen, Mario was standing by a glove that someone had dropped. Within 5 minutes about six people told him that he'd dropped his glove.

So we left it there and turned on the camera to record the helpful people, because Mario said that in NYC, everyone would have walked by.

We will be the media

Rebecca MacKinnon comes back from a conference and writes, Public Media, Citizens' Media & the Internet:
We have entered the new age of We Media: we are all potentially media now. All citizens must learn how to think more critically about the various kinds of media we are interacting with, and be able to distinguish between various types of media and the different motivating forces behind them. All citizens need to better understand how and why these various forms of media are created, and be better empowered to create their own. Media participation comes naturally to some but not to many others who have spent a lifetime passively absorbing it.

Macworld Report

Hi,
This is Steve Garfield reporting from Macworld San Francisco.

I'm sitting ont he floor of the media room near an outlet. Nick Douglas, formerly of Blogebrity, now with Gawker Media, just came by to share the open outlet with me.

Then he says, "Your Steve Garfield!"

Ha!

So this was my first keynote address. I was seven rows from the front. As always Steve JObs did an excellent job.

It's all about making it easier for people to share their content.

Some highlights from me:

- iPhoto greeting cards, photo books nad calendar. Looks really, really nice.

iLife, which is free with new Macs, now includes a program called iWeb which among other things will allow you to easily create a sweet looking blog that also supports podcasts.

Garageband will now let you create podcasts and one bbutton publish them to your blog. The blog, btw, will reside on .Mac.

iMovie also has some nice new features that FCP users might be envious of, like titling... It now has one-click save for iPod. Nnice!

The new iMac is running an Intel Core Duo chip and is really fast, so now might be a good time to look at the iMac.

All the core apps like FCP will run native on teh new iMac in March.

The MAcBook Pro is the new fastest and thinnest laptop ever from Apple being 4-5 times faster than existing laptops.

If you want all the specs on the new announcements, head over to the Apple site.

Lots of people are blogging their thoughts too, check out engadget for discussion on why the new Macboom Pro doesn't support Firewire 800.

Finally, Steve played a new ad announcing the Macs running Intel voiced by Keifer Sutherland.

I hope to have pictures and video later. Internet connection is soooo slow....

Rocketboom's CES 2006 Video Recap

Go over and watch Rocketboom's CES 2006 Video Recap.

There are a ton of my photos and video in that one!

See if you can figure out which ones I took. ;-)

Apple HDTV in the Home of the Future

Macworld keynote countdown - Engadget:
"The latest rumor says Apple plans to get all Blue Man Group and catapult itself onto our living room walls, where it will stick in the form of HDTV flat panels for the new Intel Viiv platform."
One thing I loved as a kid was the GE Home of the Future at Disney World.

GE's Circle of Progess, it was called and it had a song and everything. I'm sure you can find whole websites devoted to it, adn I've probably linkned to it in the past, but that's not important right now.

Yeaterday was the last day of CES, and tomorrow is Macworld. This was my first trip to CES and I need to spend a few hours writing up a lot of the highlights that I saw.

But since the Macworld keynote is tomorrow, I'll have to say a quick word about the Microsoft/HP Home of Today that was in the parking lot of CES. They built a house right there!

It showed not the FUTURE but the PRESENT of what you can do with Windows Vista and the Media Center PC.

There were about 10 rooms, and each had computers in them. As each room's guide told us, "you can see who is at the front door, and you can watch four TV shows at once." Yup. Eight out of ten guides told us and demonstrated the same thing.

A side note: Your oven can also be a refrigerator that is controled over the internet.

Sharp Aquos
So back to Macworld. Based on what I saw at CES, I am expecting to see hundreds of HDTV's at the Apple booth, connected to Apple Centrino Duo Laptops allowing you to have access to your media from anywhere. Music, photos, video, stored in your home or on the net, will be available for you with the Macintosh ease of use. Gotta happen.

Computers hooked up to HD TV's rock. The Sony Playstation 3 had a huge crowd around it asking each other, "Will this blow away the Xbox?"

Although I'm still working on digesting everything I saw at CES , I'm excited to see what Macworld has in store.

Apple Centrino Duo Laptop

At CES, I was talking to an Intel representative.

I asked him, "Will Apple be using the Centrino Duo chip on their laptop?"

He replied with a big smile, "You'll just have to wait and see."

The Centrino Duo allows you to multitask on your laptop AND increases the battery life to something like 4-5 hours.

I would LOVE to have a laptop like that, if it also supported my Final Cut Pro software in native mode.

Xacti HD1

Xacti HD1 by stevegarfield, uploaded from flickr.

A podcast from the floor of CES 2006 at The Sands, using the brand new Samson USB microphone, plugged directly into my Powerbook, recorded with QuickTime Pro, and uploaded with Audioblog.

MP3 File

CES REPORT: DAY 1 - The Sands

After a free shuttle from my hotel to The Sands. I started my exploration of CES at the smaller of the two locations. The Sands opened up one hour earlier that the main convention center, so I got here at 9:00 to look around.

I've always wanted to come to CES and this is my first time here. It's 10:30 AM now, and after seeing half of the Sands floor, the show has been a lot of fun.

I've met some great people already.

The first interesting thing I saw was a dancing robot. $1,00 as a kit or $1,200 all set up. It's certainly the talk of the first five rows of the show.

http://hitecrobotics.com

Next up, as I looked for the Akimbo booth, I peered into a demo room full of stereos with exposed tubes. Wow! What a cool booth. These stereos go for $20,000 each.

The guy working the booth was very interesting and has a site at http://behindthenettv.com

Steve and Microphone
My next stop was at the Samson booth where I met Rob Garofala who had some USB direct connect microphones. He was introducing two new ones at the show, so we hooked one up to my Powerbook and recorded a podcast right from the show floor. I'd have uploaded it then, but there isn't any WiFi on the show floor. Really nice looking microphones that every podcaster will want if they are looking for a simple solution of hooking up a microphone to a Powerbook or desktop for a simple two part recording studio.

At he same booth I met Tim Bourquin who just ran the Podcast Expo in California. It was nice meeting him and he said he's also going to MacWorld next week...

http://tncnewmedia.com

Slingbox plays Video on the Phone
After that booth from the other isle there arose such a clatter teat I had to go see, what was the matter. It was a very entertaining demonstration of the SlingBox from Sling media.

http://slingmedia.com

Now they've got it so that you can watch your saved TiVo programs from your telephone! Really! The presenter is an actor who was hired to do the presentation. It was very entertaining. I spoke with him later...

Next up, I stopped at the Manfrotto booth and casually picked up a tripod. Whoa! It was SO light. It's their new modo tripod for smaller digital photo and video cameras. It has a level, easy to use swivel top and a quick release interface. Really nice, comes out in April for $79... All my vlogging friends should have one.

And my final stop before taking a break was the WowWee booth, where there were robots of all kinds and shapes dancing, bowling, and in the case of a gorilla head, growling.

http://wowwee.com

A 10 oz Tree Top Cranberry Juice costs $3.25....

OK, now I'm off to see the rest of the Sands and then I'm off to the convention center to go find Amanda and Andrew at the TiVo booth.

After my short break it was back onto the floor. As I entered the hall I heard music coming from a booth labeled X2gen. Lots of flat screen TV's and a scaffolding behind. On top of the scaffolding was a live band. Video from the band was being broadcast onto the flat screens on the show floor. I got some video of that. http://x2gen.com

The next booth I encountered caught my eye with their signage: VIDEO EDITING IS DEAD.

It was muvee company. Their software automatically takes your raw footage of movies and photos and makes it into a movie set to music.

There are lots of styles to choose from. Mohamed gave me a short demo and then I asked him if I could have muvee make a movie for me with the footage I had already taken on my Canon S400. He brought out his laptop and we loaded up my pictures and video from the previous two hours. Video that I was going to have to edit anyway.

So we loaded in the footage and chose a quick edit style. The music we used is licensed by muvee for demo purposes. I then clicked a button that said make muvee and the software analyzed all the footage, looking at the where it would make the edits.

After that I previewed the movie and could make any changes that I wanted. there are a TON of options on how to save your movie, even to DVD. I chose Quicktime, 320x240, 15 fps and saved to a flash card. then I copied the movie onto my Mac for viewing with QuickTime player. Plays great.

Watch the movie: VIDEO: CES 2006 - The Sands.

http://muvee.com

After leaving that exciting video editing option, the next booth was StikAx which let you edit your video using a custom handheld game controller! http://stikaxusa.com I talked with Colm Barry. He's from Dublin and demonstrated how you can program each button on the controller to relate to an mp3 file or a movie file. Then, when you start pushing the buttons, the music or movie plays for as long as you hold the button down. It's a really great way for live performance artists to do live shows with music and video. You can also save your creation as a movie.

Next up were a table full of powerful LED flashlights. Really, really bright! http://sunturnpower.com

I also saw the best A/V platform for HD TV, FVD. 5 times higher clarity that DVD.
http://www.edlife.com.tw

After that was a company that was recently featured in the Boston Globe. Cybertracker http://hissusa.com Their device looks like one of those plastic things you get when waiting for a table at a restaurant. For $30/month you sign up with Cingular ( I think ) and you get gps tracking via the device, plus NEXTEL push to talk technology. So for example, you you put the device in your kid's car and then you can see where they are al all times, talk to them via push to talk, and also set it up to get an email or SMS message when they go out of a specified range or drive too fast. The device also give you an internet connection that you can use to hook up your computer to get on the internet wirelessly.

Wiseframe had some very bright and shiny LED tube and pixel wall displays. http://www.wiseframe.com

My final stop before lunch was a seat at the Golf Launchpad. This is a golf ball that when hit, send a virtual golf ball flying in a computer golf game. Nice!

Lunch at the bar at the Venitian was very good, then a quick walk past the gondola rides outside up to the Las Vegas Convention Center. I hear that the convention center is 28 football fields long. It's 3:00 and I'm heading over now...

Tom Cruise to the rescue

Lost Remote: Yahoo crashes, Cruise to the rescue:
"Tom Cruise intro'd the trailer to Mission Impossible 3. It really kicks on the big, 100-foot high-def screen. Then when it's over, a guy from the audience yells, 'play it again.' And Cruise says, let's see if they can get it to work. And fortunately for Yahoo, it plays again moments later.

Semel had the best line: 'If you're going to have a demo glitch, it pays to follow it up with Tom Cruise.' "
Reading Lost Remote makes me feel like I'm at CES already.

When I get there, I probably won't see as much unless I log on and read Lost Remote. ;-)

Will we all sit there like frogs in water

RConversation: Why Microsoft censorship in China matters to everybody:
"If these American technology companies have so few moral qualms about giving in to Chinese government demands to hand over Chinese user data or censor Chinese people's content, can we be sure they won't do the same thing in response to potentially illegal demands by an over-zealous government agency in our own country? Can we trust that they're not already doing so?

When it comes down to interests of government vs. interests of the individual it seems pretty clear where their default position lies.

Will users and investors push for an attitude change? Can we convince them that disrespecting the universal human rights of users anywhere and everywhere will be bad for their business in the long run? Or will we all sit there like frogs in water being brought very slowly to a boil? "

David Pogue at 2006 CES

David Pogue is going to the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show and files his first report from the air:
CES is dream come true for electronics nuts, because you get to see every scrap of every cool new electronic gadgetry from every corner of the earth--some that's for sale now, some that will be arriving in stores in 2006 or later, and some, thank goodness, that will never see the light of day. But CES is also a nightmare. Over 2,500 companies are on display, spread out on multiple buildings with show floors the size of continents.

The show lasts four days (Thursday through Sunday). So by my calculations, you'd pretty much have to visit 52 booths an hour to see it all. That's less than a minute per booth--without stopping for lunch, conversations, demos, meetings, keynote talks or bathroom breaks.
I love David Pogue.

I'm heading out to CES tomorrow and will only have two days to see everything, and by my calculations that will be 156 booths per hour. HA!

Original post, from DVblog:

Le Lion Devenu Vieux (1932, 3.5MB, 1:04 sec.) Ladislas Starewitch is often credited with inventing stop motion animation as we know it, though so are several other people. It depends on what fits into your definition of stop motion. Certainly he was probably the first to actually make little figures and move them frame by frame in an attempt to duplicate lifelike movement of actual living things.

Interview with Jerry

Bill Dawson of woof has an exclusive interview with Jerry of It's JerryTime! and a preview of tomorrow's It’s Jailtime for Jerry!

A defining moment for the film and television business

Right to the Top - Newsweek Technology - MSNBC.com:
It's the dawn of the democratization of the TV and film business—even unknown personalities are being propelled by the enthusiasm of their fans into pop-culture prominence, sometimes without even traditional intermediaries like talent agents or film festivals. "This is like bypass surgery," says Dan Harmon, a filmmaker whose monthly L.A.-based film club and Web site, Channel 101, lets members submit short videos, such as the recent '70s music mockumentary "Yacht Rock," and vote on which they like best. "Finally we have a new golden age where the artist has a direct connection to the audience."

On the Internet, no one knows or cares if you're ready for prime time.

Sides chosen in Logan WiFi battle - The Boston Globe:
"Logan International Airport officials' ongoing quest to ban airline lounges from offering passengers free WiFi Internet services is angering a growing array of powerful Capitol Hill lobbying groups, who say Logan could set a dangerous nationwide precedent for squelching wireless services."
It's nice to see some strong opposition to those at Logan International Airport in Boston, who want to ban free WiFi.

I am not in the FilmLoop

With FilmLoop you can "drag and drop photos to the desktops of your entire social network in a live, continually updating Loop."

I just heard about it in two places:

Guy Kawasaki has some FilmLoops on his new blog.

Dave Winer informs us that his sister-in-law, Alice Lankester, is VP-Marketing at FilmLoop.
