Zefrank viewed 1 million times

Revver blog reports:
"ZeFrank is one of our most popular community members. His daily videos are powered by Revver and shared with the world on ZeFrank.com. In just one month on the network, his videos have been viewed almost 1 million times."
Now one million and one. ;-)

Go watch the show with zefrank: 07-14-06 over on revver. [ My affiliate link is in there ;-) ]

If you click the Share This Video link on Ze's page, you get a choice on how you can share his show.

You can embed the video on a web page, make a link to it with an image, banner or text, and you can even download it if you like. All these options maintain the revver ad links so that Ze can make money off the videos. That's cool.

When you show Revver videos on your website or blog or even in an email to friends, you'll get 20% of the ad revenue from that video.

When you do that with Ze's videos though, your links send people over to revver and not to Ze's blog.

I wonder if there's a way to put affiliate codes on links to Ze's site? I'd prefer to do that.

Elder Cell Phone

I've been looking around for a phone for my mom. She's 80, and wants to have a cell phone.

This Virgin Mobile K10 Royale Phone looks like a good choice to me.

It's $19.99 - Web Special Price, then $6.99 / month and .10 per minute. Seems like the best plan out there for someone who isn't going to use a phone that much.

I hear that cell phone companies are finally looking into making phones with bigger buttons and numbers for those with failing sight, but haven't seen any yet.

Do you think this is a good one?

For a site that helps you document your life, Dandelife.com, they've picked an ironic tagline.

Enormous Tubes: The Rap.

Bang Camaro

Sooz points us to Bang Camaro:
"I have never been so thoroughly amused (in a good way) at a concert. The premise behind the band is that they do mostly guitar solos and choruses. There is no “lead singer.” It sounds ridiculous; but these guys are pros and they sound great."
Push Push and Bang Camaro are great songs!

Amber and Leo Ask A Ninja

Amber MacArthur and Leo Laporte interview Kent Nichols and Doug Sarine from Ask a Ninja on Inside the Net | TWiT.TV.
This was a really fun interview. I like being able to sample this podcast online, instead of having to subscribe and get delivered a tons of shows that I might or might not be interested in.

RSS and subscriptions are good to get shows that you know you want to listen to or watch, but subscriptions to shows that you don't normally watch just fill up your disk and use bandwidth from the provider that they probably wouldn't want you to use.

It's a lot like using TiVo to subscribe to shows you want to watch vs. channel surfing with your remote control.

I like doing both.

Second Life

Camille Dodero's Phoenix article on Second Life just went online, Does your life suck?.

We talked on the phone and I told her about my experiences in Second Life, trying to figure everything out.

She talks about what happens to a lot of people when they first get started, lots of falling:
It took me a while to learn to control my avatar. I’d press the wrong key and end up descending into what appeared to be solid ground . . . sinking, sinking, sinking. Apparently, my steep learning curve isn’t unusual. “Someone was asking me what Second Life was,” says Boston-based video producer and video-blogger (a/k/a “vlogger”) icon Steve Garfield, who set up an SL account in May to attend a Harvard Berkman conference in both real life and Second Life simultaneously. “I’m like, ‘I went to go check out this conference center, and I fell in the water, and I walked around on the bottom of the water, and I flew out of there. Then I bought a Devo hat and it took me a half-hour to figure out how to put it on.’”
It's a seven page article online. I'll pick up a hard copy tomorrow. Nice job.

Comments are now moderated

There is some loser robot that has figured out how to defeat the comment spam filters that blogger has set up.

So instead of going into blogger and deleting every single comment by this robot, I have turned on comment moderation.

Members of blogger will not have thier comments moderated and they'll fly right through and be posted.

Others will have to be pre-screened by me.

So now is a good time to sign up with blogger!

You'll have a blog too where you'll be able to post all your thoughts, dreams and frustrations. You don't have to use the blog though if you don't want to. But at least you'll have one, so at cocktail parties you'll be able to tell people that you have a blog.

Wait.

That doesn't make sense. I'm enabling comment moderation on my blogger blog because their spam filters are starting to fail me, and I want you to sign up with blogger?

Ironic.

Three Way Cable Splitter

For those of you who are interested in the results of the follow up visit from Comcast regarding my direct modem line being disconnected, here's the story.

Yes, my dedicated line was disconnected. In addition, it has been deactivated. Now no signal is coming in on it.

The three-way splitter is now feeding two modems and one TV.

The Comcast technician moved my modem which is on the third floor to the 3.5db output since my cable has the farthest way to go. The other modem and TV are on 7db output.

There's a thread over here talking about the different Cable Splitter outputs. Good luck understanding it.

The Comcast technician sys not to believe the online speed tests. Just look at how fast pages load.

His line testing tool says that the signal up to the third floor is good.

The pages do load pretty quickly.

Now all I need is a new router that doesn't have a 10MB limit. How do you like the Linksys WRT54G? My initial research leads me to believe that the WRT54GL is a better choice.

I Met The Beatles

I'm still on Long Island. Last night's wedding party for cousins John and Diana was truly amazing.

The party was at Diana's parents house which was right on the water. The yard seems to be permanently set up for functions.

Soon after we arrived, I heard Beatles songs, and up on the deck were two guys dressed in black suits with skinny little black ties. The announced that they were John and Paul from Strawberry Fields , a Beatles tribute band made up of former cast members of Beatlemania.

These guys were good.

I enjoyed them so much that I had to call my friend Casey to let her hear some of the music. I ended up leaving a message for her and she texted me back asking if I was drunk at a Beatles concert. Ha! Nope, not drunk, but very happy.

After an amazing array of appetizers and a few Yeungling's, we were entertained down by the water under a huge tent. This tent was so big it could have Cirque de Soleil show under it. The evenings entertainment was provided by Greaseband. They were a really fun party band, and took us through the years, changing costumes for every era, 60's, 70's and 80's.

Unfortunately there isn't any video of me dancing with my cousin Marie, and belting out the chorus of "I Feel Like a Woman" by Shania Twain. That my friends was lots of fun.

Networked journalism

Unmediated reports on Jeff Jarvis' new way of thinking about Citizen Media, it's Networked journalism:
"In networked journalism, the public can get involved in a story before it is reported, contributing facts, questions, and suggestions. The journalists can rely on the public to help report the story; we’ll see more and more of that, I trust. The journalists can and should link to other work on the same story, to source material, and perhaps blog posts from the sources (see: Mark Cuban). After the story is published — online, in print, wherever — the public can continue to contribute corrections, questions, facts, and perspective … not to mention promotion via links. I hope this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy as journalists realize that they are less the manufacturers of news than the moderators of conversations that get to the news."

At Least the Comcast Cable Guy didn't Fall Asleep

Comcast came over today to hook up our tenant's cable modem and TV.

For some reason, the Comcast technician took my dedicated cable modem line and used it to add on the tenant's TV AND cable modem.

So my cable modem isn't a dedicated line any more. It was put on a dedicated line a while back to resolve connectivity issues. The technician at the time told me that he labeled it so that future technicians would not disconnect it.

Guess that plan didn't work out too well.

I just got off the phone with Comcast and the rep informed me that he could not send out a technician to put back my dedicated line, but could send someone out to BOOST the line.

What?

Why can't they put things back the way they found them?

Was it too much work for today's installer to run a new line? He wouldn't even have had to run a new line, there already was a line right there.

I'll have to report back next week on the resolution to this saga.

Production Values

Dave Huth says:
Videoblogging is about exploding a lie. The lie goes like this: “You’re not good enough, you’re not pretty enough, you’re not smart enough, your equipment isn’t good enough, your lighting isn’t sweet enough, your audio isn’t controlled enough, you don’t have the proper training or knowledge of the right production conventions for your voice to have a place at the table. Media making is for professionals, the rest of the riff-raff is just too low-tech and ignorant of ‘proper staging’ techniques to be taken seriously.”

Common Sense

Mike Hudak writes, Happy Independence Day:
"The Fourth of July isn’t significant simply because it marks the beginning of independent American politics. It’s significant because it marked one of the first times that a group of people threw off the yolk of foreign leadership and chose self-government. It is significant because of the emphasis placed on individual empowerment and individual choice. It is significant, most of all, because of the ideal of America created on or around July 4, 1776 — an ideal that we have yet to realize, but that we continually strive for."

Interactive Video

I was just interviewed by a reporter from Economist for an article about interactive video.

After the interview, I searched around and found this:

VideoClix TV | Hypervideo | Video Hotspotting | Clickable Video.

If you have QuickTime, check this:

http://www.videoclix.com/showcases/LotR/index.html

I think this is pretty cool.

Now that I've seen it, I wonder if I've been using interactive videos all along and not realized it since it's pretty seamless.

Intuitive.

Are there interactive videos that you like?

The video from my session at the Media Giraffe Summit is now online:
Merging Forms: Is the Medium Still the Message? [ QuickTime ]

Includes:
Robb Montgomery, Paul Grabowitz and me, plus all the attendees.

It was an unconference done Phil Donahue style. Going through the attendees first to see who they were and what they wanted to learn helped us determine the content of the session.

Some of the things I covered were how to make a blog post and how powerful that is when combined with Google, making an audio podcast using only your cellphone, and making a video using a standard digital still camera and posting that to your blog with a few clicks. Fun stuff.

At the conclusion of the session a number of people came up to me and told me that our session was hte best one that they had attended.

I think part of the reason for that is that we included them in the session in a meaningful way and did a lot of showing vs. telling.

Thanks to Robb and Paul for working on this with me and thanks to Tish Grier for helping out.
