The Mitt Romney Deception
Activist rains on Romney's parade - The Boston Globe:
"It was 4 a.m. Brian Camenker , 53, a computer programmer, sat at his kitchen table in Newton, hunched over his Toshiba laptop. Strewn around him were papers detailing former governor Mitt Romney's alleged ties to gay youth conferences, gay judges, and abortion rights activists.Providing a link because the Boston Globe doesn't.
The documents, mostly printouts of news stories, represented weeks of work by Camenker and a few volunteers who had searched the Internet for material to disprove Romney's assertions that he is a conservative. Now, the results glowed on the screen in front of him, compiled into a 10,000-word dossier, 'The Mitt Romney Deception.'"

Swimming Across Jamaica Pond
Sam Allis writes in today's Boston Globe, On the wild side, an article about Rick Berlin:
"Jamaicaplainspoken.com, the website he and Todd Drogy, a fellow musician and a waiter at Zon's, another estimable JP eatery, have created to showcase the astonishing array of characters who live in the 'hood. We're talking 43 video interviews of folks in JP, with more coming, along with a documentary down the road."This is a very interesting project that documents the lives of people in Jamaica Plain. I just watched The Swim. Nicely done.

- Blip.tv CEO Dina Kaplan wants to make video blogging into a paying profession for video makers.
- The impact of social media (like PR) is overdetermined. There are a lot of moving parts. Which is not to say that it can’t be measured. How do we do it? Well, it depends. Here are some things we can measure, some of which may be right for your project

Podfeed.net Please Respond
Podfeed.net is using the wrong video link for my videos in their directory. This means that the view/download is not counted over on blip.tv, and Mike Hudack tells me that the video link they are using could break.
I'm posting this here because a submission at the site got no response.

Fark.TV on Super Deluxe: The Future of Video
The Plain-text, non-Web-2.0 Story of FarkTV
Super Deluxe is the first broadband network launching entirely with original production-quality content. They're not doing what everyone else is doing. They're not putting a huge stable of crappy re-runs online that youve already seen on TV a million times. They're not inundating their network with thousands of videos of people playing guitars or candid little vignettes of guys getting kicked in the nuts (although that stuff is pretty funny). No one has ever seen this before - it's an Internet-launched network with professionally produced shows. It's the future of video.Super Deluxe is good. I linked to them twice yesterday.

Brightcove Beats YouTube
Just talked to Jeremy Allaire from Brightcove, about the Barack Obama announcement video, and he says:
"There were over 140k views of the video yesterday. That will update on our site today..."
Amazing.
This is big news.
John Edwards announcement video on YouTube now has 103,524 views since December 27th.
Barack Obama's video on Brightcove has over 140K views since yesterday.
Has Brightcove dethroned the king with this video? Has Obama jumped to the top of the presedential race with one video?
I'll be watching developments closely.

Samantha & Bianca at Harvard
Samantha & Bianca drop some science on us by RubyJi, uploaded from flickr.
Samantha Velez and Bianca Ramos talked about what it's like for them as sixteen year olds in High School having to work 35 hours a week and go to school where half their class has already dropped out of school.
I was very impressed with these two young women and I'm glad they came to Harvard to speak at the Berkman/Sunlight meeting on Political Information in an Internet era.
in the midst of seeing all the new and exciting web and wiki initiatives, hearing from them about what needs to be done at a local. gave us a much needed perspective.
I see there is a snowball microphone there and hope that the recording of their talk gets posted to the net for a greater audience to hear.
I hope they get to go to SXSW.

End the War
United for Justice with Peace:
"MARCH ON WASHINGTONBoston Phoenix: Dumb and Dumber:
January 27, 2007
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, NOW CONGRESS MUST ACT
On Election Day, voters nation-wide delivered an unmistakable MANDATE for PEACE. And now, it's time for ACTION!
On Saturday, Jan. 27th, people from every corner of the country will march on Washington, DC. Our message will be clear, our voice will be strong: End the war in Iraq, Bring all the troops home now!"
When it comes to Iraq, Bush has become a dictator.
It’s a scary thought: the president of the United States doesn’t know what he’s doing. What other conclusion can the nation draw?
Barack Obama on YouTube
Barack Obama just released a video over at YouTube titled, Barack Obama: My Plans for 2008.
Senator Obama is announcing the formation of his Presidential Exploratory Committee over there and on a new website BarackObama.com. He's also got a video page hosted by Brightcove. There's also a full text transcript of his announcement. All he needs now is a blog with RSS 2.0 and media enclosures. ;-)
As of 1:49 EST there are 551 views on YouTube. Let's see how long it takes for this video to register 1,000, 10,000, 100,000.
Update:
7:46 PM EST 15,870 Views on YouTube
7:57 AM 1/17 21,616 Views on YouTube
Statistics on his Brightcove Channel haven't been updated yet
It'll be interesting.

Citizens Response
Joho the Blog: Citizens Response:
"At dinner last night with Zephyr Teachout and Steve Garfield (lucky me!), at the kick-off of a Sunlight -Berkman conference (tag: berkmansunlight), we had an idea.Let's do it.
The next time there's a national speech or a press conference, instead of waiting for the opposition party to nominate a single person to issue a response, let's vblog citizen responses. If we tag our responses 'citizenresponse' and perhaps use a second tag indicating what we're reacting to (or maybe just the date will do), we'll all be able to find them. "

Video Conversations on My Blog
Just saw this new video recording widget that lets you have video conversations. Let's try it out.
INVITE CODE
Here's an invite code for you to use flickzor on your own blog: omg.43l4qt
YOU NEED TO SIGN UP TO RECORD A VIDEO
You've got to sign up to send a flick video.
MY INITIAL FEEDBACK
I've sent them in some feedback:
1. Can you make the record greeting button change into a stop recording button so that you don't have to look down after starting the recording? Please do this.
2. When looking at the widget, how do you know that there are other videos available for viewing other than pressing the right hand fast forward button to check?
3. Do you send email notifications that new flicks are awaiting approval?

There's a photo of him there. He doesn't look like that.
I sent Robert a new banner suggestion a few weeks ago made up of Thomas Hawk photos. I just updated it.

What do you think?
Do you have an idea for a new Scobleizer header graphic?

DriveAwayTime: Hosey Forced From Axiom
I got a call from Ravi Jain last night asking me to come down to the new Axiom Gallery on Green Street to help him push his car, Hosey, OUT of the gallery.
With the help of a few others we actually had to lift the back end of the car off the gallery floor to get the car situated so we could push it out the door. Dave Wildman has more.

"Think having an exhibit of videoblogs done in a car is a crazy idea? Well, pulling the car itself into the gallery proves to be an even crazier idea."Come to the opening reception: Friday January 12th, 6-9pm.
No to Iraq War Escalation
This is the most important moment to speak out on Iraq since the war began. Last night, President Bush proposed an escalation in Iraq. If we act today, we can make sure Congress stops this plan in its tracks.

They Lost the Moon Landing Tapes
Here's a story some of us were talking about recently where the government lost the moon landing tapes.

Wired 15.01: One Giant Screwup for Mankind:
Wired 15.01: One Giant Screwup for Mankind:
"THERE ARE 4 MILLION musty boxes at the Washington National Records Center, a squat brick building in Suitland, Maryland, that's been housing inactive federal records since 1967. The boxes are stacked on gray girders that rise about 20 feet and would cover the equivalent of 14 football fields of cold concrete bunkers. 'We have income tax records, passport applications, patent records, trademark records,' says Alan Kramer, division director at the center. 'And we have records from NASA, too.'Sounds like Raiders of the Lost Ark.
The building grows more crowded every day. In 1950, the federal records totaled 45,000 cubic feet. Today they cover 25 million, and bureaucrats add more than 500,000 cubic feet every year. Digital migration was supposed to lighten the load. It hasn't. 'People don't trust computers, so they print out everything,' Kramer says."

Say It To CBS
YouTube and CBS: If You Had 15 Seconds:
This is a step in the right direction. CBS is now asking people to submit videos to YouTube.
CBS is following the path that Jeff Jarvis suggested, and that I prototyped with SayItToKatie.com.
I personally explained how user submitted content should work in a discussion with management at CBS. I looks like they were listening.
CBS has a 15 Seconds page over on CBS.com where you can read the rules and follow a link to watch the recently submitted videos over on YouTube.
This is a smart move by CBS since they don't have to screen any videos, and all the submissions can be seen on YouTube. The only videos they have to get a release waiver for are those that they choose to put on CBS TV.
Congratulations.
Now I need something to say. ;-)

YouTube and CBS: If You Had 15 Seconds:
"If you had 15 seconds to tell the world whatever you want to, what would you say? Well, now's your chance to be seen and heard on national television, courtesy of CBS Interactive. Post your 15-second video on YouTube, and CBS Interactive will select one to be broadcast on TV! The first selection will air on Sunday, February 4, 2007. "Yay CBS.

Apple's New Calling: The iPhone:
Apple iPhone - Official page.
"Cell phones do all kinds of stuff—calling, text messaging, Web browsing, contact management, music playback, photos and video—but they do it very badly, by forcing you to press lots of tiny buttons, navigate diverse heterogeneous interfaces and squint at a tiny screen. 'Everybody hates their phone,' Jobs says, 'and that's not a good thing. And there's an opportunity there.' To Jobs's perfectionist eyes, phones are broken. Jobs likes things that are broken. It means he can make something that isn't and sell it to you for a premium price."Sonds like a phone my mom could love.

Ninja Goal Setting
Christopher Penn and Bre Pettis by stevegarfield, uploaded from flickr.
Last night over at Christopher Penn's a few PodCamp Alumni and friends gathered for a small get together which included a Ninja excersise.
No, not that Ninja.
Christopher prepared us with this email:
In preparation for the party on Saturday, for those of you attending, I'd like for you to bring something with you, and for any guests you're bringing, the same. We will be performing what's called the goma, a ninja meditation exercise involving helping each other achieve our goals.Christopher did a great job leading us through the excercise.
What I'd like for you to bring on Saturday is this - please choose one goal you want to achieve in 2007 more than any other. A goal you are fiery passionate about, a goal that you know you can achieve if you stretch past your comfort zone and one you'll burst with pride when you've completed. Be sure the goal you want to achieve is measurable in some way as well, and try to be concise in your description of it, ideally no more than a sentence or two.
On a record breaking day of warmth in Boston, I was wondering why Christopher had his fireplace blazing. It all became clear later on.
Chris Brogan would have totally loved it. A lot of the excercise had to do with committing to a goal and working on it everyday.
That reminds me, I should send off an email.
Christopher Penn has "Show Notes" from the party. This is the coolest thing I have every seen in my whole life!

WSJ.com is Free Today
The Wall Street Journal came out with their new redesign today.
NO TIME
I don't think there is enough time in the day to read everything they have written in today's issue.
Has anyone tried? Does anyone actually read every article?
The newspaper has has changed from being skimmable, to being like the Sunday New York Times where you need to block off a period of time to read and digest everything.
TOO FEW WORDS PER COLUMN
One thing I noticed is that the font is very easy to read, but there don't put enough words in each column.
You can compare the online version of this article to the printed one.
Iraqi Leader's Past of Shiite Activism Undermines Pledge to Heal Rifts - WSJ.com. Free access today. Free on newsstands too I hear.
In print it looks like this:
BAGHDAD, Iraq -- His only son wasOnline, all the words of this sentence are on one line, except for the last word which wraps to a new line.
getting married on Friday, but the
Iraqi prime minister couldn't stay long
at the wedding.
It gets worse when you turn to the continuation page. Once there, each line has only 3-6 words on it. I think that's a lot of work for your eyes, shifting back and forth all that time.
Online, each line has around 30 words on it.
Can someone explain to me why newspapers have many narrow columns instead of paragraphs that cross the page?

Deval Patrick on Marriage Equality
I just got this email from Deval Patrick:
And BTW, this statement should be on the Deval Patrick website, in a blog post with a permalink, so I wouldn't have to repost the entire thing here.
If you find it somewhere on his site let me know and I'll link to it there.
DEVAL PATRICK STATEMENT ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL CONVENTION AND MARRIAGE EQUALITYThis is what John Edwards should be saying.
Boston – January 2, 2007 – The following is a statement from Governor-elect Deval Patrick on today’s Constitutional Convention:
“I believe that adults should be free to choose whom they wish to love and to marry. The SJC’s decision in Goodridge affirms that basic human right, and I support it.
“Above all, this is a question of conscience. Using the initiative process to give a minority fewer freedoms than the majority, and to inject the state into fundamentally private affairs, is a dangerous precedent, and an unworthy one for this Commonwealth. Never in the long history of our model Constitution have we used the initiative petition to restrict freedom. We ought not start now.
“For practical reasons as well, it’s time to move on. Whatever one’s views of marriage equality, all can agree that we have far more pressing issues before the Legislature and the Commonwealth. It serves no public interest to focus more time and attention on this issue when there are under-served and under-performing schools, an infrastructure showing signs of sustained neglect, gun and gang violence on the rise, jobs and people leaving the state, a growing homeless population, soaring health care costs, a looming deficit and a score of other serious challenges crying out for the attention and the creativity of the government and the people. We cannot in good conscience ask these unmet needs to wait while a few individuals try to insert discrimination into our Constitution.
“I favor ending this petition initiative promptly. If adjournment can accomplish that, so be it. If the Constitutional Convention chooses to vote on the merits, I want to be utterly clear that I believe a vote to advance this question to the 2008 ballot is irresponsible and wrong. Given the significant challenges we face on so many other fronts, I would be deeply disappointed in such a vote. It would do nothing more than condemn us all to more years of debate and expense on a matter that is legally and practically settled.”
And BTW, this statement should be on the Deval Patrick website, in a blog post with a permalink, so I wouldn't have to repost the entire thing here.
If you find it somewhere on his site let me know and I'll link to it there.
