Haiti Photo: Home is all rubble now. How it spread from a cellphone, to twitpic, to twitter, to Getty, AFP and more.

Metro Front Page: Hsiti rocked by massive quake

I saw this image from Haiti in a copy of yesterday's Metro newspaper. It's the newpaper that you pick up on the subway.

The caption read, "A Twitter image purportedly shows Haitians standing amid rubble yesterday in Port-au-Prince after the earthquake."

There was no credit given to the photographer.

That annoys me.

Twitter image
Twitter does not host images, so the image was found VIA twitter, but was actually posted elsewhere. It's not really a twitter image. Is it?

Username
Where was the twitter username?

That's like TV stations crediting videos that they take off of YouTube as "YouTube video." There is a user name associated with the video. Credit them!

So back to this photo. The photo had an image credit of AFP/Getty Images, so I started a search and found this.

GETTY Images
This image obtained from Twitter purportedly shows Haitians standing amid rubble on January 12, 2010 in Port-au-Prince after a huge quake measuring 7.0 rocked the impoverished Caribbean nation of Haiti, toppling buildings and causing widespread damage and panic, officials and AFP witnesses said. A tsunami alert was immediately issued for the Caribbean region after the earthquake struck at 2153 GMT. AFP PHOTO / TWITTER == RESTRICTED TO EDITORIAL USE / NO SALES == (Photo credit should read -/AFP/Getty Images)

Then I found this on AFP:

They determined the photographer's name and added it to the AFP site, but that doesn't help for all the places it went uncredited.

Next is the local TV station which has a credit for the photographer.

Mashable reports on the source of the image. Twitter posts by Marvin Addy of cellphone photos taken by Carel Pedre.

Nice job Mashable.

Mashable - Haiti Earthquake: Twitter Pictures Sweep Across the Web [PHOTOS]:
An outpouring of well wishes and support for the Haitian people has swept the web in the wake of a devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. And just like during the Eureka earthquake, tweets have quickly spread moving and gut-wrenching TwitPics of the disaster.

Photos taken by journalist @CarelPedre on his mobile phone are providing a glimpse into the devastation that has slammed the Caribbean nation. Another Twitter user, @MarvinAdy, shared those pictures through TwitPic, resulting in tens of thousands of views and countless retweets.

Here's Carel Pedre's twitter page and websites...

Schlomo Rabinowitz- Get Seen Interview

Schlomo

Steve Garfield: So, it says "camcorder empty" and I'm like, "Oh, my God. The camcorder is empty!" I'm like, "No, wait a minute. That's a good thing."

Schlomo Rabinowitz: Yeah. It's empty. I haven't used it today. I could actually put stuff on it. Is that what you mean that was a good thing?

Steve Garfield: They need a new wording for that.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: They do.

Steve Garfield: Camcorder is fabulous. Record.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: Yeah, camcorder is excited to be used. Camcorder excited.

Steve Garfield: Camcorder empty. Oh, my God. That's like a gas gauge.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: Exactly, seeing that's negative. Yeah, I agree.

Steve Garfield: I got to talk to user interface kind of. So, tell us who you are.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: I'm Schlomo Rabinowitz.

Steve Garfield: And why don't you just tell us what the secret of online video is.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: To me, the secret of online video is really understanding how, you know, we all have these little toys, right? You understand that I could just run a gun and go "Ba! Ba! Ba!" but it's about now what do I do with that and how do I deal with my subject, how do I get what I need from them and make them feel comfortable, so in the end they look fun on camera and I'm getting my information out and how do you do that. That's really the secret of online video because we're all talking about making concise things with crazy, f*cking click machines and now how do I make that happen like over here, they are doing an adoption service and I decided to do some on there and one of the people there is this little 10-year-old girl. So, I said, "Hey, can we use her to represent the adoption service?" Right? So, I got the little girl and we're talking. I said, "Okay, so this is Little Missy, the dog," right? She's introducing the dog and I said, "Since we're looking for an owner and we're at South by Southwest, what sort of music does the dog like?" and she goes, "Uh, Miley Cyrus?" I said, "Perfect!" So, hopefully people will see this then Miley Cyrus may come adopt Little Missy, you know? That sort of thing. So, you get something fun as opposed to just, "Here's the dog adoption service. Here's the static wide shot. Now, let's go in." It's a little bit more than that. It's between that and bringing a camera from here into here. Get a close up then go back. That's actually engaging online.

Steve Garfield: Oh okay.

Schlomo Rabinowitz: See? See?

Steve Garfield: Oh, wait a minute. Let's go find that dog. Where is that?

Schlomo Rabinowitz: Over here.

Steve Garfield: Okay.

He completely shredded the curtain I had mentally erected around this intimidating thing called "video podcasting"

Dan York reviews Get Seen, Want to do online video? Get Steve Garfield's new book "Get Seen":
I can still remember when Steve Garfield completely blew my mind and opened it up to all sorts of possibilities.

It was April 2007 and a whole bunch of us from the from the Boston area had gathered at Boston University for Doug Kaye's latest Podcast Academy 2... C.C. Chapman was there... Chris Brogan (before he started his ascent to rock star status ;-)... I seem to recall Christopher Penn... it was all the "early days" of podcasting and so by and large most of us knew each other in some way. Many of us were in a local email mailing list for New England podcasters - and we were there to learn from Doug Kaye and the talented list of instructors he brought, but also to learn from each other.

The final session at the end of the last day was Steve Garfield up to talk about "Video Podcasting".

Introduction to Videoblogging at Podcast Academy - May 2006

I can still remember Steve up on the BU stage... because in the first few minutes of his talk, he completely shredded the curtain I had mentally erected around this intimidating thing called "video podcasting".

You see... I had been blogging since 2000 and participating in audio podcasting since early 2005 (with "For Immediate Release", where I still contribute to this day), but video?

No way! Video was hard... it required expensive equipment... it was difficult to do... it took special knowlege... it was complicated...

And there was Steve, standing up on the stage pointing a silly little commodity point-and-shoot camera first at himself and then at all of us... copying the file over to his computer... and then uploading it to YouTube or his blog or some site... all in the first 5-10 minutes of his talk!

Hello?

Was the awesomely intimidating "video podcasting" really as easy as this???
Thanks Dan.

That was a great day at Podcast Academy 2. I remember sitting through the earlier presentations, thinking, "why are they making podcasting sound so complicated."

Here's a video of the session:

It was fun to show people how easy it was, and it still is!

Brett Gaylor - Get Seen Interview

Brett Gaylor

Interview Transcript:

Brett Gaylor: My name is Brett Gaylor and I directed a film called "RiP: A Remix Manifesto." It's a film I made over the course of about six years actually and kind of the thing that I tried to do all the way through the production of the film was to try and involve the audience in the creation of the actual film. I mean the film is about remix culture, right? It's about this kind of tension between participatory media and copyright law because of course people are using copyrighted images to express their culture and this whole war that's been going on over the last 10 years is sort of directly affecting that and I felt it's not getting us anywhere. So, it's a pretty strong viewpoint film, "A Remix Manifesto." It's not a remix chat. Right from the beginning, I had a website called opensourcecinema.org and as I was shooting, I would put my rushes and sort of works in progress on this site under a CC license. So, what that allowed me to do is to let the audience know that they can participate in the film. They can use my footage however they want, but I want them to submit it back to the site as well so that I can include it in the final film. So, then I would start to edit these into the film during the editing process and sort of do like a call and response with the audience. So, at some points in the film they kind of take over and it's their part of the film and then I'm back, you know? That's how I decided to do it, sort of a structured open source sort of experiment.

Steve Garfield: Okay. So, how do people see the footage, grab it and send it back to you? Like sometimes footage is kind of big. I mean how do you do that. What software?

Brett Gaylor: That's a good question because right when I started doing this, there was no real option for that. It was just basically peer to peer. They would post something and at some point, I might ask them for a higher resolution or I would just eat the bandwidth and download it, but now what I've done since the film has been released is I'm working with a company called Kaltura to integrate onto Open Source Cinema web-based editing. So, it can actually take place on the web using your browser. You don't have to have Final Cut Pro or iMovie or whatever the PC folks use. You don't have to have that stuff. You can just do right on the browser. So, that takes care of that kind of part of the question.

Steve Garfield: Oh, that's cool.

Brett Gaylor: What's cool about Kaltura is that they keep a reference to your high resolution one and what happens online is almost like an EDL. So, you can always point back to the original high resolution version.

Steve Garfield: That's neat. So, if people want to find out about this project and the movie, what URL, where would you send them?

Brett Gaylor: Opensourcecinema.org.

Steve Garfield: Okay, great. Thank you.

Brett Gaylor: Thanks Steve.

The Social Media 100
100 ways to tap into social media for a more profitable business

In The Social Media 100, social media expert and blogger Chris Brogan presents the best practices for growing the value of your social media and social networking marketing efforts. Brogan has spent two years researching what the best businesses are doing with social media and how they're doing it. Now, he presents his findings in a single, comprehensive business guide to social media.
Curious.

Chris Brogan's new book seems to have two titles.

Which is it "The Social Media 100" or "Social Media 101?"

Update:

How about something like this:

Social Media 101: A Brogan Book Mashup

I'd have to guess that the Amazon.com image is preliminary.

Update II:

No wait. I get it. The Amazon.com TEXT is preliminary and NOT the title.

I like this game.

Here's my final answer:

Social Media 101 Revised

Update III:

Ok. Final, Final answer.

The original cover design is correct, BUT the title on Amazon.com is wrong.

I'll go with The Social Media 100 as my final answer.

Update IV:

It's Social Media 101. I should have stayed with my earlier answer.

I should have phoned a friend.

I lose.

Let's play again.

UPDATE JAN 19:

My final answer looks surprisingly similar to the revised book cover on Amazon.com.

I just took the application for a spin and my first impression is that it's a very convenient way to find all my content. Looks really sweet on the iPhone too. The YouTube video experience is stellar.

If you were on a web browser, you'd have to visit multiple sites to browse all this content, but in the MotherApp iPhone application, it's all there in one place.

I do have a friendfeed lifestream on my main SteveGarfield.com page, but I don't think people look at it.

It's a user interface issue.

Maybe I need a web based version of the iPhone app to make it easier for people to find my content?

What do you think about the iPhone app? What's the best way to present data from multiple streams to your community?

Comcast 4 FREE On Demand Movies - EXPIRED

What's Wrong With This Picture?
There are a lot of things wrong with this offer, beside the fact that when I tried to redeem it, it had expired.

1. You have to visit a website to redeem the free offer.

It would have been easier to just credit my Comcast account for $23.96 ($5.99 x 4)

2. The free offer included 4 free movie coupons that you would get each month.

Same response as above. Sending me a free coupon does not help when I use automatic billing.

It would mean that I'd have to mail in a payment card IN ADDITION to my electronic payment.

Amazon.com Video On Demand
I just ordered a few movies from Amazon.com and had them scheduled to be delivered to my TiVo. I might have considered ordering On Demand movies from Comcast, but Comcast don't allow ordering On Demand movies via TiVo.

Comcast's Loss is Amazon.com's Gain.

She crowd sourced images for her new CD and auditioned fans online to play with her in concert dates.

While making Ellipse, Imogen let us into her studio and showed us how she was recording hte album nad let us listen to bit and pieces.

After watching, I donated and then bought the album online.

How To: Become a tester of new video products and sites

Webbie, Flip, Kodak Zi6

On the Yahoo! Videoblogging list, Amani Channel asked how he can become a tester of new technology.

Here's my answer:

You know I think you're doing a great job by sharing yor knowledge on your site. One thing you could do is add more text to your video posts.

In this example you are explaining how to use a pro mic, but the reader needs to view the video to learn how.

If you add text to describe what's in your video, it will make the video easier to be found via Google.

You also call it a 'profesional microphone,' I'd call it an 'electro-voice RE20 professional microphone' and link THAT back to electro-voice.

After writing the review, I'd drop the company an email to let them know it's out there. It they are on twitter, send them a message there.

By doing the interview, you're helping people learn more about the product and it's valuable.

In my case, I bought all my equipment my self and blogged about how I was using it to make video. In the beginning when we were all learning, when I posted each video, I also explained how I made it.

Even recently I purchased a number of new cameras and microphone to test for my book, Get Seen. It was hard contacting each of the companies and some don't even have a presence on social media sites.

For those products that I had to have in the book, I borrowed a product, or tried one from a friend.

When I saw that no one had done a review of the iPod touch when it added a video recorder, I went to the Apple Store nad did a review there and took product shots.

The most last thing I added to the book was a review of the new Windows Media Maker that runs on Windows 7. I learned it and made a movie and posted it while at the local Microsoft center for a presentation.

Once you have a history of being someone who can write well and review products, companies should want to contact you.

Best wishes for a productive 2010 reviewing new products.
