LA: Best. Breakfast. Library. Streamy Awards Pre-Party. Ever.

I had the Best. Breakfast. Ever. with Tina Clark from Kodak at Hilton LA - Checkers. I went on Yelp! to see what was a good restaurant mear my hotel, The Biltmore. Checkers came up with reviews that said it was the best breakfast they had ever eaten. So we tried it. It was.

After breakfast, I decided to check out the LA Library. I heard the it was really something to see.

I went in and found that they had free WiFi. After looking around a bit, I wandered into a lecture about Shahan Natalie. Very interesting.

Next I visited every floor. There were art installations all around. There was a great display of old Lobby Cards from movies.



As I was looking at the exhibit I spoke with some other visitors. We agreed that it would be fun to watch some of these old movies.

Next I got on a computer and looked up my book, Get Seen. They carry three copies in the library. All were checked out! Cool.



I found a lot of great spots to stop and work. I was putting the finishing touches on a webinar I'm doing next Thursday for Authors Globe, Online Video Secrets to Boost your Profits to New Heights. It's a great overview of web video.

Vamped Out: A Funny Web Series You Should Watch

Last night I attended the LA premiere of a Kevin Pollak's new bablegum web series, Vamped Out at Cinespace in LA. Thanks to Tim Street.



That's Jason Antoon, Amber J Lawson and Kevin Pollak.

I'm in LA for The Streamy Awards. I'm a member of the academy and will also be doing some blogging for Kodak on the red carpet.

I'll get to the Vamped Out premiere in a bit, bit first I want to tell you about the after party that was held at Capitol City Sports Grille. It was nothing like the events that I usually go to in Boston, New York or San Francisco.

It was so Hollywood.

Lots of people from the film and TV industry including actors, producers and agents were there including Matthew Perry, Ileana Douglas and George Ruiz.

Dina Kaplan was there representing blip.tv. Always a pleasure to see Dina!

That's why people are in LA, at after parties like this.

We had a lot to talk about since one of the areas I'm focusing on these days is how film, tv and internet will manange interactions with the people formally known as the audience.

Note:
I'll be moderating a panel on Real Time Interaction with Television at Jeff Pulver's 140 conference in New York on April 20 and 21.

I also spoke with someone who's working on a web series. The discussion turned to how I was one of the first videobloggers back in 2004.

She asked, "So what series did you work on?"

That was funny to me. I told her that back then there were no series, it was just people sharing moments of their lives. Then I talked about how we got together in person and how great it was.

She said she felt a similar thing being at this event where she could interact with other web series producers.

Interesting.

So back to the premiere.

I've never seen a web series have a premiere.

Usually I see some twitter messages, blog posts and Facebook event invites, but never a premiere at a space where you can see the video up on a big screen with good sound.

Kevin Pollak told us about the series including some information about the cinematographer and editor Academy Award winner Robert Legato, who did visual effects for Titanic and Harry Potter. Kevin was talking to him on the phone one day and Robert asked if he could help out in any way. Robert ended up volunteering to shoot and edit the series.

Then we saw all six episodes of Vamped Out. Very funny.

The Most Fun You Could Ever Have on an Airplane: Virgin America

You got into LA from Boston. I had a direct flight on Virgin America. I love it.

First of all, Gate 38 at Logan Airport is the best gate. You've got your own TSA screening, so the lines are always short.

The fun starts when you arrive at your gate. The gate announcements today associated the group letters on our boarding passes and we got a little song when the letters were announced.

Next up when I handed in my boarding pass, the gate agent was very impressed with how I trimmed my boarding pass.

I had fun consuming tons of multimedia on the flight using gogo WiFi and my iPad. Also watched some Direct TV, listended to some music on the inflight system (great tunes)





I was tweeting with the world from 35,000 feet.

The flight attendants told us their names were Chocolate Chip, Cinnamon and Coco (American Idol Season 7 contestant who made it to LA).

I told them I was involved in putting video on the web and then we decided to do a show.

We recorded this:

I love flying Virgin America. It's a lot fun and the crew has a great time as do the passengers.

Lucky Strike Lanes at the top of Jillians in Boston is a great place for a tweetup. Lots of space, really, really long bar, and confortable couches. There are a bunch of bowling lanes at the back, which in addition to the constant music could get old after a while, but it wasn't that bad. There is on street parkign if you can grab a space, lots of parking lots too, the one behind CVS costs $10.

How To: Get ePub Books onto the iPad

ePub Books on the iPad:

All you do is click on the ePub link for a given book... or download the ePub file and then open it with iTunes, and iTunes automatically copies it into the Book section of your iTunes Library. Then you can sync you iPad and get whichever books you want.

Harpoon Brewery 5:30 Club Tweetup Video and Photos

Mike Schneider took his Belching Monkey Beer review show on location to Harpoon Brewery during one of thier 5:30 clubs.

I grabbed some photos of the cool Harpoon Brewery space and shot a video where you can hear a description of all the beers.

Island Creek Oyster Stout

I brought home a Growler of the 100 Barrel Series Island Creek Oyster Stout, fresh from the tap. Sounds weird, but tastes great. They actually do make it with oysters.

Brewed by Harpoon brewer Katie Tame, using Island Creek oyster farmer Skip Bennett’s revered Duxbury Bay oysters, this beer has a rich body and smooth mouthfeel derived in part from a combination of roasted barley and chocolate rye malts. The roasted malt notes blend beautifully with the briny, mineral flavors of the Island Creek oysters. An addition of hops adds some bitterness to balance the malt sweetness.

This video of Phil Paget painting the Swan Boats of Boston will be featured on the WBZ TV noon news on Tuesday April 6th, 2010. I took it for the specific purpose of getting it on TV.

Disclosure: I do some consulting work with WBZ. Not sure if that had anything to do with it getting on air. I'm sure the news division makes those decisions on their own.

5 Shooting Tips For Getting Your Video on TV:

1. Situate the camera so the sun is behind you.
2. Put camera on a tripod, hit record, and step away for a minute.
3. Take multiple shots to choose from later. If you don't like them you can just delete them.
4. Get people's names.
5. Send in information about what was going on, and when you shot the video.

The iPad is Lisa!

So far, after less than 48 hours with the Apple iPad, I think it's going to change things like the Apple Lisa did for PC computing.

Check this, The History of the Graphical User Interface or GUI - The Apple Lisa:

The Lisa was the first personal computer to use a GUI. Other innovative features for the personal market included a drop-down menu bar, windows, multiple tasking, a hierarchal file system, the ability to copy and paste, icons, folders and a mouse. It cost Apple $50 million to develop the Lisa and $100 million to write the software, and only 10,000 units were ever sold.

The iPad gives us a whole new way of thinking about user interface in a tablet computer.

The App Store and iBook Store make adding new applications and books seamless. I've downloaded a number of free apps and books and can see how easy it will be to start buying paid applications and media.



The publishing companies that have come out with iPad ready aplications are smart. I'm enjoying USA Today, Yahoo! Entertainment, The New York Times Editor's Choice.



It's my first time using Tweetdeck. I'd like a better twitter iPad application.

I had some trouble syncing my applications at first. They all were deleted from the iPad, but saved on my Mac. The iTunes interface is somewhat problematic where it lists both iPhone and iPad apps together, so I had to pick and choose which applications I wanted to reload.

I'm becomming selective on which applications I load onto my iPad, choosing only iPad ready apps.

These iPad apps that take advantage of the iPad User Interface make the iPhone apps seem small and cramped. I've also got a new, "Oh man I have to use a mouse," feeling.

The iPad requires yet another power adapter and docking unit, a 10 Watt version.

For times when I'm out, and there's no WiFi available, I'm exploring ways to use my existing AT&T SIM with a data plan, on a MiFi-like device, or in my Nokia N95 phone that can turn into a WiFi hot spot.

Obviously, I won't be using the iPad to shoot video or photos, but when the USB connector comes out, I might be using it to upload. No live streaming from it either.

It's going to take us a few weeks to get a handle on the iPad and it's ramifications...

I know one thing, it's easy to carry around the house.

...compared with a cellphone or a conventional computer, the iPad seems to be a device that users will want but not need.

iPad: The Logic Exits Your Left Earhole:

The key to the "iPad hook" I've decided, is you have to already have and be comfortable with an iPhone. If you have an iPhone and you touch an iPad you will experience a mindless rush of hindbrain-generated device-lust within moments. You will feel this rush even if you are a sceptic and have read in detail about the well-documented "shortcomings". It's like the iPhone was just some kind of precursor preparation "pod" aimed at preparing it's users to be "body-snatched" by an eventual iPad-like device...

The thing is it's NOT a technology product that logically solves an unsolved problem. It's an experience. It's totally illogical, but it's true.

Three Kinds of Light For Video

Here's a test I shot with my Kodak Zi8. I took three videos under different lighting conditions.

I've done lighting tests before, but this one really made me think about lighting. When you don't have anything to compare to, your lighting looks fine. But when you see how much better it can be by adding more light, you can really see a difference.

The LitePanel is is nice because it has a dimmer switch on it, and it can be powered by plugging it in. Some of the less inexpensive LED lights can only be charged up by plugging them in.

Per YouTube:

We will soon be retiring the ability to add and link to a blog from your YouTube Account.

Even though "Link to a blog" will soon be retired, you still have other options to share your YouTube Activity with external sites. You can:

Embed a video / playlist in a blog or webpage.
You can AutoShare your YouTube activity to Facebook, Twitter, and Google Reader.

You can see that this is gone in your YouTube settings under Blog Setup.

As noted, you can still copy and paste the embed code into your blog. The embed code can now be found via a button located under the YouTube video.
