Declutter your inbox by moving out the bacon (Bacn)

Bacn is email that you have subscribed to, but don't want in your inbox. It's email that you want to read, just not right now. It's usually not a unique email from a person, but is an newsletter, promotional email, or ad.

I filter these emails into a folder called BACN.

With my new Mac email client, Airmail 3, they make it relatively easy to filter incoming emails.

Here are the steps.

1. OPEN the RULES Window.

2. SET UP A new rule that says IF ANY INCOMING FROM CONTAINS [ ENTER EMAIL ADDRESS ] THEN MOVE MESSAGE to [BACN folder]

3. COPY the EMAIL FROM ADDRESS to the [ ENTER EMAIL ADDRESS ] field

I like these shorts, and bought one pair, but that doesn't mean that I want to see an email from them every day!

Then when new email comes in, it will be evaluated for a match with the FROM field and moved to your BACN folder for reading later.

More info on Bacn, an offshoot of Spam. ;-)

Wikipedia defines Bacn:
Bacn
Bacn is email that has been subscribed to and is therefore solicited. Bacn has been described as "email you want but not right now." Some examples of common bacn messages are news alerts, periodic messages from e-merchants from whom one has made previous purchases, messages from social networking sites, and wiki watch lists.[76] The name bacn is meant to convey the idea that such email is "better than spam, but not as good as a personal email".

The term bacn was coined at Podcamp Pittsburgh 2, August 18, 2007, 9 years ago!

How to add captions to a Facebook video?

How to add captions to a Facebook video?

Facebook Help: How do I add captions to my video?
You can add captions to a video to make it accessible to a broader audience using the SubRip (.srt) file format. If you’re just getting started, learn about the naming convention for .srt files and common .srt formatting issues.

To add captions to your video:

-Click Photo/Video at the top of your Timeline.
-Click Upload Photos/Video.
-Choose a video from your computer, add details about the video, then click Post.
-When the video is ready, it’ll appear on your Timeline. Click Just Now or the gray date and time at the top of the post.
-Hover over the video, click Options at the bottom and select Edit this video.
-Click Choose File below Upload SRT files and select a .srt file from your computer.
-Click Save.

To add captions in other languages, repeat steps 4-7 for each additional language you want to add.

How to create a .srt file:

Some options:

SRT Edit Pro-Make and Edit By bin liu. "SRT is the most popular subtitle format. SRT Edit Pro is a professional tool for SRT subtitles creating and editing. You can make your SRT file from scratch or edit your existing SRT file on Mac, do timing, timecode adjustment, subtitle editing."

Aegisub is a free, cross-platform open source tool for creating and modifying subtitles. "Aegisub makes it quick and easy to time subtitles to audio, and features many powerful tools for styling them, including a built-in real-time video preview."

How to Open Applications From Unidentified Developers in Mac OS X $9.99 in Mac App Store

If you choose to get Aegis, this is how you OPEN it after downloading.

How to Open Applications From Unidentified Developers in Mac OS X:

-Hold down the Control key and click the application icon. From the contextual menu choose Open.
-Click Open.

Open Video.

Create Subtitles for Video

This takes a little getting used to. You set an in point, type in your subtitle, then select and endpoint.
Save that line, then do the same for every subtitle.

I formatted the first one to look right, then copy and pasted that formatting to each subsequent line.

STEPS:

Set in point
Past formatting
Watch video
Type text
Set out point

Repeat.

When done, save the caption file.

Oops. The file format saved is .ass

You need to save as .srt.

Here's how:

Does Aegisub allow saving to SRT?
Yes, but only if it means that no information will be lost. In other words, if you have any override tags that aren't \1c, \b, or \i, Aegisub won't allow saving directly to SRT. However, you can still export to SRT by using the File -> Export... dialog box. Just uncheck all the checkboxes (clean script info, VFR transform etc.).

This is what the .srt file looks like:
1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:01,058
Record HD

2
00:00:04,028 --> 00:00:07,094
Hey everybody, it's Steve Garfield from SteveGarfield.com

3
00:00:07,092 --> 00:00:11,019
and Carol from Carol at Steve Garfield.com

4
00:00:11,066 --> 00:00:15,003
You don't have to lean over because it's big

5
00:00:15,003 --> 00:00:16,006
I can just relax?

6
00:00:16,023 --> 00:00:17,013
Yeah, you can just relax.

7
00:00:17,020 --> 00:00:19,006
...and I can put the camera on me.

8
00:00:19,006 --> 00:00:20,047
Hi Everybody!

9
00:00:20,047 --> 00:00:22,047
...and we're watching the Olympics.

10
00:00:22,047 --> 00:00:25,087
MEVO by Livestream, although I'm just recording.

11
00:00:25,087 --> 00:00:29,004
right now, Carol, now it's on you. OK, I'm here.

12
00:00:29,037 --> 00:00:35,035
The opening ceremony, people walking in, still has not started and it's 8:25 almost.

13
00:00:35,035 --> 00:00:38,052
When is it going to start?

14
00:00:38,052 --> 00:00:43,002
I want to go zoom in on me now. Let's see how that works.

15
00:00:43,056 --> 00:00:44,072
This little test.

16
00:00:44,089 --> 00:00:47,076
How can you see? Right here, zoom in on me.

17
00:00:48,016 --> 00:00:50,010
Then, go over to you. OK.

18
00:00:50,010 --> 00:00:54,040
...and a two shot. So we're going to watch the Olympics. Enjoy it.

19
00:00:54,067 --> 00:00:58,037
and we have some truck out side of the house making beep, beep, beep noises. Good timing.

UPLOAD TO FACEBOOK

I'm still working on this... When I upload to Facebook I get an error.

Help. ;-)

UPDATE:

I posted the same video and .srt file to YouTube and it works fine. So maybe it was just a temporary Facebook issue.

Lands' End Boston Light Press Event

Lands' End Boston Light Press Event

PRESS RELEASE:

LANDS’ END FUNDS PROJECT TO RESTORE
BOSTON LIGHT BOATHOUSE
The company’s third rehabilitation project will honor country’s first and oldest lighthouse

DODGEVILLE, Wis., July 26, 2016- Today Lands’ End announced supportive funding administered by the United States Lighthouse Society, in partnership with non-profit, Boston Harbor Now, the National Park Service and the United States Coast Guard, to address the condition and needed repairs of the Boston Light Boathouse. Celebrating the 300th anniversary of Boston Light this year, the Boathouse, located on Little Brewster Island, will receive funding to repair the outdated foundation to allow for the building to be reopened as a Visitors Center for the public. This project is part of an ongoing partnership between Lands’ End and the United States Lighthouse Society.

“We are honored to once again work alongside the United States Lighthouse Society in support of the rehabilitation of a vital structure to our nation’s first lighthouse, a treasured beacon that has been beloved by the Boston community for 300 years,” said Federica Marchionni, CEO, Lands’ End. “This meaningful project is very important to Lands’ End, since our first company logo over 50 years ago was a lighthouse symbol that signifies our longstanding commitment to quality, value and service that we still believe in firmly today and will for decades to come.”

The selection of the Boston Light is in line with Lands’ End’s Lands’ Friendly campaign, a mission to continually strive to be a leader in sustainability through partnerships and projects designed to support and protect the environment. Lands’ End is also providing support through the sale of a limited edition canvas tote bag with the Boston Light lighthouse logo on it at local Lands’ End Shops at Sears for $35. For each tote purchased, the company will donate $10. Participating locations include Hanover, Peabody, Braintree, Hyannis, N. Dartmouth, Burlington and Natick.

“Boston Light is an excellent choice for this year’s rehabilitation project,” said Jeff Gales, Executive Director, and the United States Lighthouse Society. “It is the oldest operating light station dating back 300 years. It’s important to ensure the quality of the historic Boathouse so that it can eventually be re-opened to the public and the Boston Light Station overall will remain a beautiful historical landmark.”

The Boston Light is a focal point in United States history and its home city of Boston. As the first lighthouse in the country, the Boston Light lived through two world wars, three turns of the century and the evolution of lighthouses by modern day technology. Though all of that has contributed to the history, it has not lost its heritage. The Boston Light is the only lighthouse that is kept by a lighthouse keeper today. By preserving the historical structure, the history and heritage of the Boston Light will continue for generations to come.

“This rich historical landmark has a story to tell and we are happy to see that it will continue to do so with the help of Lands’ End,” said Kathy Abbott, President and CEO, Boston Harbor NOW “We hope that with these renovations, the Boston Light will continue to be a staple in the rich history of the city of Boston.”

This year’s project is continued through the partnership between Lands’ End, United States Lighthouse Society, with support from Boston Harbor Now, United States Coast Guard and National Park Services. In 2015, the rehabilitation of the Alcatraz Lighthouse was the first of this project.

Review: MacFamilyTree 8 Demo Version

I tried a demo version of MacFamilyTree family tree software. It looks pretty, but fails to save.

DATA ENTRY
Data entry is fairly easy. You have to make sure that you choose the correct sex of the person you are entering, otherwise children get the wrong surname. This can be fixed later though.

CHARTS
If you've ever wondered how you are related to someone in your family, the relationships chart with help you figure it out:

It makes pretty looking Fan Charts:

The charts are a very nice feature of this program.

GENEALOGICAL DATA
It works with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints's free FamilySearch to allow research into genealogical data. You can then download info into your family tree, and upload info you have found that isn't there.

There is no integrated connection to Ancestry.com. GEDCOM import/export is available.

DEMO VERSION
But, if you enjoy using the demo copy and want to purchase the full version, you can't transfer anything you've entered into the demo version into the full version.

You lose everything.

Seriously! What a failure in software design. I have never seen this in a demo software program. Usually you buy the program and then unlock all the features, allowing you to save the data you have created with the demo. It would have been nice to have been given a warning about this when first opening the demo version. You only get a warning when you try to save or print.

Let's make this clearer.

You get a warning that you can not save or print, but you do not get told that you will NEVER be able to save or print the data you have entered into the demo version.

From their FAQ:

I want to try MacFamilyTree before buying, what do I do?
Please download the demo version here. You cannot save or export your entries using the demo version. Additionally, iCloud is not supported in the demo version. Please note that entries created with the Demo Version can not be transfered to the full featured version from the Mac App Store!

CONCLUSION
They almost had me with their Mac user interface, but after entering in so much data, and now facing the task of having to enter it in again, I might as well pause and take a look at other options including Mac software, REUNION, and the popular online and iOS solution Ancestry.com.

If the developers of MacFamilyTree want to be more helpful, they should either alert demo software users that they will never be able to save their work, or update the demo version to be able to be unlocked when paid for and then allow saving and printing of the data.

If/Then in Boston.

We saw If/Then Musical last night and were blown away by the talent of Jackie Burns who played the lead character, Elizabeth.

Jackie was the understudy of Idina Menzel for the title role of this play on Broadway. You can see why. In addition to her thoughtful acting, her voice is truly amazing. At one point int he play, Carol turned to me and said, "She does this multiple times."

This was at the point of a powerful solo, packed with emotion.

It was incredible to watch as she left everything on stage as if she was experiencing everything for the first time, and sharing it with us.

At a few points during the play, they audience couldn't help but let go their emotions.

During one sweet kiss, a woman nearby softly said, "Awww..." Everyone around us smiled at that...

The play follows Elizabeth through two different paths that her life would lead depending on the choices that she makes. Her life becomes both happy and sad, and she becomes both weak and strong. I didn't expect that the writers would go there, but they did. There are some powerful moments here.

In addition to Jackie Burns, Anthony Rapp, you know him from RENT, brings his unique voice and portrayal to the character of Lucas. Also featured is American Idol's Tamyra Gray as Kate. Tamara did an excellent job. Matthew Hydzik brings power and nuance to the role of Josh.

The staging is RENT-like, starting out with a guitarist on stage, but it's the floor to ceiling video displays that become part of the show to indicate where in NYC the action takes place. Also innovative was the staging for scenes that took place in the NYC subway system.

IF/THEN at the Boston Opera House July 5 - 17.

- You'll get a notification in the app if your device has a low battery
- Got a particular audio device you prefer to use for calls? You can now choose your preferred audio devices by going to Ring > Preferences in the main menu. (if you're on a laptop and your preferred audio devices aren't available, we will fall back to using the currently set speakers and mic)
- You can download or copy a link to a video from right in the video player

Fixes:

- If you're a shared user, we won't show you delete buttons you shouldn't see
- Addressed a timing specific issue in which if you tried playing a video at just the right time (or just the wrong time depending on how you look at it) you'd be prompted to upgrade to Cloud Video Recording even though you had it
- Addresses a rare crash that could occur when opening your device settings
- Lots of visual tweaks and fixes throughout the app
- The app is a lot less chatty in your Console app
- If your login session becomes invalid, the app can now gracefully recover by prompting you to log in again
- You can now paste video URLs into Chrome again
- Windows for calls no longer float above menu bar controls like volume control. They still float above all other windows, though
- Several fixes to the Pro Doorbell Motion Zones settings
- In Pro Doorbell settings we no longer mention that your device is hardwired, because *of course* it's hardwired
- If you click on the TOS or privacy policy links for Google Maps in the address picker, they will open in your browser.

The Boston Globe Doesn't Mention or Link to Online Video

I read this article by Christopher Muther in today's Boston Globe and thought that it was the perfect article to have an accompanying video.

But, there was no mention of a video, or link to a video, in the print version of today's paper. This has been a problem for years. I've written about it here extensively. Back in 2013, I even asked the editor of the Boston Globe, Brian McGrory, if they could mention links to multimedia content in the print version of the newspaper. He told me that they knew that they had to do a better job. They still do.

Here's today's Wednesday Food section.

When I went on line to search for a video, I couldn't find the Wednesday Food section.

So I searched. And I found a page with a blank space where a video should have been, We made a "Tasty" recipe. The Boston Globe's Christopher Muther attempts to cook a recipe from a "Tasty" video. Note: Where's the article?

Blank space where the video should have been on iPad.

Same on iPhone.

Then I checked the web version, still no video.

But wait! After a while, it loaded.

Integrating multimedia pointers into the newspaper seems like it could be added to the print and online versions of the Boston Globe with proper planning.

A simple solution would be to direct readers to an online link that would include the day's multimedia content.

There are probably examples online. ;-)

Note: Updated to reflect no video on iPad or iPhone.
